Archaeological excavations have shown that humans have been growing potatoes for at least 7,000 years. It is known for certain that this vegetable was the staple food of the tribes that lived in the Andes region; the first tubers from South America were brought to Europe by Spanish sailors. Today potatoes are one of the most common crops cultivated for food, with a total area of 8,000 hectares. In this regard, for the development of agriculture, scientific research on the search, selection, preservation and creation of starting material for the further breeding of high-yielding potato varieties adapted to soil and climatic conditions is relevant. Among the recent ones is the Aurora potato.

Breeding history

This rather young variety owes its appearance to the Closed Joint Stock Company "Vsevolozhskaya Breeding Station" and several breeders of the city of Kirovsk: Kolesova, Slobodina, Zueva, Bryantseva. After all the tests carried out, the potatoes of the new variety were entered into the State Register. The official date of birth of the Aurora potato is 2006.

Description of the variety

Aurora potatoes are very reliable, unpretentious in the growing process. It is in demand among gardeners. Starch content is 14-17%, ascorbic acid is present. The variety is multi-tuberous.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

The potato bush of the variety has large green leaves of a dark shade. The flowers are lilac in color with pinkish veins. The bush has high tops of more than 79 centimeters in length, erect.

This variety has an extensive tuber system. Root crops are medium in size, oblong, oval in shape. The peel of potatoes is thin, smooth, yellow, with pinkish eyes, which do not stand out much against the general background, since they do not exceed 3-4 millimeters. The root vegetable mass is 93-128 grams. However, there are exceptions, and there are also larger potatoes. The pulp has a creamy shade, practically does not change its color even during the cooking process.

Purpose and taste of tubers

Aurora is a mid-season table variety. Potatoes are rich in flavor and crispness. Due to its qualities, Aurora is excellent for casseroles, pancakes and mashed potatoes, but not recommended for salads.

Maturation

The root crop of Aurora can be dug up as early as 100-110 days from the moment of planting. Early potatoes can be removed 20 days earlier.

Yield

The Aurora variety has a high yield compared to many others, averaging 214-396 centners per hectare. Only one bush ripens from 20 to 25 root crops. After digging, it retains its presentation for a long time and has a high degree of preservation - about 90%.

Growing regions

This variety takes root well in all climatic zones of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, as it is able to withstand both drought and rainy periods, calmly tolerates a cold snap. However, the most preferable is the Far East region. And also Aurora is planted in the North Caucasus, Central, North-West regions, sometimes in Moscow, Moscow and Leningrad regions.

Growing and care

It is important to remember that to plant the Aurora, you need exceptionally healthy potatoes without various damage, stains, cracks and rot. This variety can be planted in mid-late May, when the air temperature warms up to + 9 ... 10 degrees. It is not worthwhile to delay planting too much, since an insufficient amount of moisture will not allow a good harvest to be formed. As for this particular variety, the Aurora must be greened well before planting and germinated in a bright place, otherwise the bushes will be weak and start to hurt.

It is better to plant Aurora potatoes in the place where legumes, for example, peas and lentils, herbs and melons, used to grow. You cannot plant this variety in the place of cabbage, pumpkin.

It is necessary to calculate the landing pattern. There should be at least 25-30 centimeters between the root grooves, approximately 70 between the rows. The depth of the hole is 15-17 centimeters. If landing is carried out in the Far East, then the deepening should be increased by 5 centimeters.

Aurora potatoes need mineral and organic fertilizers. When the wells are already prepared, you need to add urea (one tablespoon per square meter) and saltpeter to the soil. Fresh manure cannot be used as a top dressing, since the excess amount of nitrogen it contains can reduce the quality of the crop. After fertilizing, you can carefully spread the root crops of the Aurora variety in the holes with sprouts up, and then cover them with soil.

To increase yields, it is important to huddle the Aurora during periods after watering or rain. You need to water it regularly every 7 days, 2-3 liters per bush, but the first watering should be done only a week after planting. When the Aurora potatoes bloom, you can increase the water rate to 3-5 liters. In the course of growth, it is necessary to make top dressing from potassium magnesium, bird droppings or saltpeter.

Approximately 5-7 days before harvesting, the tops of the Aurora must be cut, while it is important not to damage the roots.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.
It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

This variety is not afraid of potato crayfish, golden nematode. However, it is prone to brown rot, scab, peronosporosis. The Colorado potato beetle and the bear are not averse to eating the root vegetable Aurora. The drug "Confidor" helps against insects. To do this, as the larvae appear, you need to spray the bushes in dry weather, Medvetox should be applied to the hole in the spring during planting. "Fundazol", excellently fighting rot and scab, you need to sprinkle root crops a couple of days before planting. Such preventive measures will save potatoes from pests and diseases.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Review overview

The potato variety Aurora is popular among amateur gardeners. It is considered by many to be one of the most delicious varieties available today. Gardeners note that potatoes are stored for a long time and do not deteriorate, even if they just stand in the kitchen, and not in a ventilated basement. Aurora has an attractive presentation, so it can often be found on the shelves. Even in hot, dry summers, when many varieties dried up on the vine, Aurora produced crops with little or no regular irrigation, and is quite disease-resistant. When boiled, Aurora turns out fragrant and crumbly.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them. If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If tightened with harvesting, potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
