Potato American has long been known throughout the post-Soviet space. Gardeners and ordinary people fell in love with this potato, as it is very tasty, and the tubers boil well and do not darken.

Breeding history

This variety was originally called Early Rose, which translates as "early rose". It is one of the oldest American varieties with an early maturity, which was obtained back in 1861 by the breeder Albert Brezi. In the 20-30s of the XX century, having appeared in our country, it was grown in large quantities on state farms and collective farms, where it received the nickname Skorospelki-loose. And in 1931, the culture was even zoned in the middle lane, center, Chernozem, Zavolzhye. The variety was then unprecedentedly popular in summer cottages.

Since Soviet times, the American woman has been actively cultivated on an industrial scale not only in the Russian Federation, but also in Ukraine, in Moldova. But gradually the potatoes began to degenerate. And although it is now grown only by summer residents, many still consider it the standard of taste.

Description of the variety

American - This is one of the oldest varieties in the world, created in America, is about 150 years old. Suitable for cultivation on all types of soil, as well as almost all regions and climatic zones of the Russian Federation. The main disadvantage is considered to be low immunity, as in many varieties bred earlier - it is affected by quite a few potato diseases.

But it ripens early, it has no equal in taste, which is why it is still among the demanded crops. At the same time, agricultural technology is quite standard.

Characteristics of the appearance of the bush and root crops

American bushes are distinguished by the presence of abundant green mass. Leaf plates with medium dissection, their surface with shine. The color of the stem is anthocyanin. The shortened peduncles are of the same color, the flowers have a white corolla, collected in inflorescences.

American tubers have a traditional pink color, they are oval in shape, slightly flattened. The skin of the tubers is smooth, with a large number of eyes. The sprouts appear either red or purple. The American woman has white flesh, but a purple pigment ring can be seen in the cut along the contour. The peeled root crop, after being cut, remains white for a long time, without darkening. On average, the tuber weighs 76-120 g. The percentage of starch in the product is up to 18%.

Purpose and taste of tubers

As already noted, the taste of the old American variety is very high. Plus, the pulp does not darken after cleaning, and the product has a characteristic friability. Moreover, American taste has been considered a classic for many decades. It is an indicator of the reference taste of the culture as such. Universal - this potato makes a wide variety of delicious dishes.

Maturation

The American is an early crop - 70-80 days after planting in the beds, you can feast on young potatoes.

Yield

From 1 American bush, you can get from 6 to 14 root crops, and with enhanced agricultural technology - 18-12. The maximum yield of this variety is 420 centners per hectare.

Growing and care

Crop rotation plays an important role in cultivating the American variety. The culture can be planted in the same place only after 3 years. And also the American does not grow very well, it can even get sick if it is planted after tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, beans, cucumbers, cabbage. At the same time, the culture feels great after corn, strawberries, legumes.

The rest of the agricultural technology is quite traditional and uncomplicated.

Planting potatoes is one of the main spring activities traditional for Russian gardeners. There are many ways to plant this vegetable, allowing you to get a good harvest in different conditions and climates. Before planting, you need to carefully prepare the planting material, correctly determine the timing, competently prepare the soil.

Potatoes, like other vegetable crops, need soil moisture. It is important to water the potatoes in a timely manner and in the right amount, then a good harvest will be guaranteed. The frequency of watering and their rate depend on the weather conditions and the characteristics of the climate of the region.
Hilling is one of the procedures that can significantly increase the yield of potatoes and protect them from weeds. When hilling, the growth of both aboveground and underground parts of plants is stimulated. This, in turn, stimulates the establishment of new roots and the formation of tubers.

Soil requirements

An American woman can grow on any soil, but still it will feel perfect on slightly acidic soils with a pH of 5.0-6.0.

It is not always possible to plant potatoes on full-fledged fertile soils, so regular feeding will help improve the situation. When growing potatoes, you can use organic, mineral and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

American is a pretty old variety. Since then, breeding achievements have progressed very far, now they are developing varieties that can withstand many ailments. Therefore, the culture cannot be considered a resistant variety, it can be affected by late blight, potato crayfish, black leg. And its lush bushes are attractive to harmful insects - the Colorado potato beetle, wireworm, bear. At the same time, the American has good resistance to such ailments as dry rot.

Potatoes are a popular vegetable crop that many gardeners planted on their site. But growing a bountiful harvest of tasty and large tubers is unlikely to succeed if the beds are not properly protected from the most common diseases and pests. Often, the development of diseases of various etiologies of potatoes goes unnoticed, so it is important to identify the problem in time and eliminate it.

Harvesting potatoes is just as important as growing them. If you dig too early, the tubers will not have time to grow and ripen, and will be poorly stored. If tightened with harvesting, potatoes can suffer from diseases or bad weather.
It is important not only to grow a good potato crop, but also to preserve it correctly. When creating optimal storage conditions, tubers can lie without spoiling for 9-10 months. Therefore, after harvesting, you need to prepare the potatoes for storage and place them in a suitable place.
