Galaxy cabbage appeared in the State Register of our country in 1993, since that time plant breeders have been able to appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of this hybrid.
Breeding history
A Dutch company was involved in breeding the variety. As a result of the painstaking work of experienced breeders, a white cabbage with a high level of transportability was obtained.
Description of the variety
Galaxy is used for outdoor cultivation. After harvest, heads of cabbage can be stored in the warehouse for up to 12 months, if they provide the necessary conditions.
One of the main advantages of this variety is its high productivity and amicable head formation. Galaxy has genetically good immunity to some of the common diseases that crucifers usually suffer from.
At the same time, cabbage of this variety needs a lot of sun and good soil moisture.
Characteristics of the appearance of the plant and heads of cabbage
Galaxy foliage is large, the surface is slightly wavy. The color may vary, there are dark green and light leaves. There is a vein.
Heads of cabbage of the described variety weigh from 3.2 to 4.6 kg on average. In shape, they can be described as round-flat. The color of Galaxy when ripe is green, inside the head of cabbage is yellow-white. All heads are dense enough, without voids.
Purpose and taste
Galaxy has excellent taste. Heads of cabbage are successfully used in fresh salads, which are high in vitamins and other nutrients.
Ripening terms
Cabbage of this variety, in accordance with the domestic filter, is classified as late-ripening. From the moment the first shoots appear above the ground until the heads of cabbage are fully ripe, it usually takes 145 days. All bushes planted at the same time yield a crop at the same time.
Yield
If you want to plant cabbage that demonstrates a high yield, then Galaxy is just that option. On average, this variety has an indicator of 450 c / ha, 4.5-6.5 kg / sq. m.
Growing regions
Cabbage of this variety is widely grown in the Central and Volga-Vyatka regions of our country. You can get a good harvest in other regions with a similar climate.
Growing and caring
Galaxy is grown from seedlings. Seeds are sown in early April. By mid-May, the first 3-4 true leaves appear, this is the very time when you can transfer Galaxy to open ground. The scheme used is 60 * 70 cm.
You need to understand that the heat is destructive for this variety, it leads to the fading of the development of heads of cabbage. The soil must be well moistened, but an excess of moisture contributes to the development of fungal diseases.
Since Galaxy is a hybrid, it will not be possible to collect seeds from this cabbage for further reproduction. At the same time, no additional processing is required, since the manufacturer took care of this himself. Before landing, Galaxy will only need to be soaked for a day.
If planting is carried out on an industrial scale, then the density should be 30-35 thousand bushes per hectare.
For growing Galaxy seedlings, containers with high walls are suitable. You can use the ready-made mixture or prepare it yourself. This will require turf in 2 parts, the same amount of compost, one part each of sand and peat.
Ash is a good fertilizer for Galaxy.For one plant, 1 tablespoon of ash is used and 40 grams of fertilizer is added to it, in which there is a high content of phosphorus and potassium.
In order for Galaxy bushes to grow healthy, regular care is required for them, which consists in timely watering with warm water and observing the temperature regime. Until the shoots appear, the containers are best covered with foil. When Galaxy seedlings reach the required maturity, they dive.
With the described variety, a seedless growing method is also available, when the seeds are sown directly into the ground and covered with a film. To obtain the desired result, Galaxy in the open field will need to be watered every seven days, fed with the following means:
- nitrophoska;
- superphosphate;
- saltpeter;
- Agricola.
The soil around each plant must be loosened. Galaxy is necessarily spud, thus a powerful root system can be achieved.
To grow a rich cabbage crop, you need to know when and how to plant this crop outdoors. Planting dates are determined depending on the variety. It is also necessary to properly prepare the soil and follow the rules of crop rotation.
Soil requirements
The soil for Galaxy should be well fertilized, since white cabbage consumes a large amount of minerals and other substances from it.
Cabbage requires particularly careful care when growing. The plant quickly absorbs nutrients, so the soil needs to be enriched regularly. Adequate amounts of minerals, organics and nitrogen must be provided. Some products can be purchased at the store, while others are easy to make at home.
Required climatic conditions
Galaxy shows good cold resistance and can adapt to adverse environmental conditions. This variety is not susceptible to cracking at high humidity and responds calmly to sudden changes in temperature.
Disease and pest resistance
To protect Galaxy from pests, industrial insecticides are usually used. Fungicides of a wide spectrum of action save from various diseases.
Cabbage is a very popular horticultural crop. But growing a good, large and tasty cabbage is sometimes very difficult, because it is often affected by a huge number of diseases and pests. The main role in the cultivation of this vegetable is played by regular prevention, which helps to get a rich harvest, and prevent the occurrence of diseases and the invasion of harmful insects. It is very important to start treatment as early as possible, otherwise there is a risk of spreading the infection to unaffected plants.
