Cauliflower is no longer exotic in Russia and is considered the most popular variety of this vegetable crop after white cabbage. Many excellent European varieties are acclimatized for the middle lane and even for the northern regions, for example, the unpretentious and tasty Dutch cauliflower Goodman.
Breeding history
The Goodman cauliflower variety was developed by the specialists of Bejo Zaden B. V. (Holland). Today this company, founded in 1912, is one of the largest and most influential seed companies in Europe and the world. Since 1997 a subsidiary “Bejo” has been represented in Russia. A huge number of breeding achievements of Bejo Zaden B. V. entered the State Register of the Russian Federation and zoned for local conditions.
One of the main projects of Bejo is the release of organic seeds, the ecological purity of which is carefully monitored at all stages of production. Goodman cauliflower seeds without chemical treatment are also available in Bejo for wholesale.
The variety was included in the State Register in 2000 and allowed for cultivation throughout Russia with the originator's recommendations on the dates of sowing and planting in the ground, depending on the climate of a particular region.
Description of the variety
Goodman is a medium early, high yielding, hardy and versatile cauliflower variety for growing in different climatic zones. Possesses excellent commercial qualities and good taste.
Characterization of the appearance of the plant and heads
The plant forms a rosette of blue-green wavy, slightly vesicular leaves directed upwards on a cylindrical vertical stem. The root system is fibrous, without an axial root, does not go deep into the soil.
A dense bunch of underdeveloped peduncles - a head, has a leveled rounded flat shape, medium tuberosity, a pleasant white-cream color, rather large dimensions: diameter from 10 to 20 cm and weight from 0.6 to 1.4 kg. Average weight: 600-700 g. The leaves protect the head, partially covering it. The variety is resistant to yellowing of inflorescences.
Purpose and taste
This cauliflower can be used universally: raw in a variety of salads or after being processed. It is boiled, baked, stewed, cooked in batter or with cheese. The dietary first course is cauliflower soup. For the winter, cabbage can be pickled or frozen.
The taste of the Goodman variety is rated very highly: it is delicate, slightly sweet. The structure of the pulp of fresh inflorescences is firm and crunchy.
Ripening terms
The ripening period of this medium-early variety from germination to the first ripe heads is about 100-105 days, or 65 days after the transfer of one-month seedlings to a permanent place. Depending on the region, sowing is carried out from early April to mid-May, and the harvest is harvested from the first days of July to September. The maturation of the heads is uneven, the collection is stretched.
Yield
Goodman is prized for its consistently high yields.Average collection rates for excellent presentation: from 3.2 to 4.6 kg / m². With favorable weather conditions and good care, productivity can exceed 5 kg / m². Keeping quality is good, storage in a cellar at a temperature of 0 ° C for up to 1 month.
Growing and caring
The variety is grown by sowing or seedling method. The garden bed is arranged in a sunny area, placing the seedlings in a checkerboard pattern of 30x50 cm or 40x60 cm. Cold resistance allows you to grow Goodman cabbage from Murmansk to Vladivostok in open and protected ground. For the first days, it is recommended to cover the seedlings with foil for better adaptation.
An important element of agricultural technology is regular watering (5 liters per bush in 5-6 days or every other day in a hot summer), only in the rainy season it is reduced. The plant responds well to careful care: hilling, mulching and feeding, especially nitrogen supplements.
Soil requirements
Due to the surface occurrence of roots, the culture is demanding on the condition of the soil. The acidity of the soil should be neutral; on acidic or too alkaline soils, plants are deformed and grow poorly. Slaked lime or ash will help neutralize acidity.
For the variety, looseness, moisture and soil fertility are also important. Before planting, it is prepared: they dig it up (in the fall), add humus and a mineral complex.
Disease and pest resistance
Goodman is rarely affected by such a common cabbage disease as powdery mildew. Other infections - viral mosaic, fusarium and blackleg - can be dangerous, so preventive measures are required. Disinfection of seeds, weeding of the area, timely removal of affected plants and spraying will help prevent diseases, as well as protect cabbage from pests.
