Hugo's squash is a hybrid variety that is distinguished by such indicators of yield, stability and taste that experts even consider it a reference. Even recently, Jade was considered the standard, but now, after Hugo was removed by the famous specialist B.I.B. Blokin-Mechtalin and entered into the State Register in 2020, he loses to him in many respects.
Description of the variety
Hugo's squash is a white-fruited hybrid of the parthenocarpic type, which means that the plant is capable of self-pollination. This fact contributes to high yields, because the ovaries are formed without reference to any weather factors, which is often the reason for the lack of pollination by bees. The crop is fruitful, at the same time several fruits are formed on the plant. Experts recommend removing the first zucchini at the stage of gherkins, when the size of vegetables reaches 20 centimeters.
An important characteristic of a hybrid is its resistance to changes in air temperature. Plants tolerate well not only heat, but also cold weather. If you follow all the nuances of care, Hugo is able to bear fruit until the first frost.
Characteristics of the appearance of plants and fruits
Zucchini Hugo bush type, they grow compact plants in the form of bushes, do not weave on the ground. The stem stem has a height of 25-35 cm, weak branching, small foliage. The leaf plates are dissected, medium-sized, green in color. The hybrid is characterized by short internodes. This feature contributes to the formation of a large number of ovaries.
The fruits are distinguished by a cylindrical, slightly ribbed shape, light green in color, with small dots. The diameter of the zucchini is average, weight is from 0.5 to 0.7 kilograms. The pulp is juicy, tender, colored in light green tones, and is distinguished by its density. The seeds are creamy in color, rather large, elliptical in shape.
Purpose and taste
The delicate pulp of Hugo zucchini has an excellent taste, is used in home cooking, as well as for canning, freezing, cooking caviar, it is often eaten fresh. Vegetables can be fried, boiled, steamed, baked and marinated. Zucchini varieties are well absorbed by the body and have many useful properties. They are even recommended by pediatricians for feeding children from six months.
Ripening terms
Hugo's squash is not just early maturing, but ultra-early. It takes only 40 days from the first shoots to the start of harvesting. In this case, fruiting lasts until the very frost.
Yield
The yield of the hybrid Hugo variety is quite high. On average, 10.3-12.2 kilograms of vegetables can be harvested from 1 square meter.
Growing and care
Zucchini of any variety is developing at a fairly rapid pace. Therefore, they do not require special attention to themselves. However, there are several recommendations of the originators for the cultivation of the Hugo hybrid, which should be followed.
So, experts consider the seedling cultivation method the most productive. At the same time, it will be possible to plant stronger bushes on open beds, moreover, the germination capacity of such seeds is higher. It is important to take into account that transplanting squash seedlings are quite difficult to transfer, it will be better to sow in separate containers.
Hugo's squash seeds can also be planted directly into the garden beds. The main condition is that the earth should already warm up to at least +15 degrees. For planting, it is worth choosing a sunny area. The best predecessors for squash are crops such as onions, garlic, as well as carrots and tomatoes. You should not plant zucchini where pumpkins and cucumbers used to grow.
On an area of 1 m2, it is worth planting no more than two bushes of Hugo zucchini, the scheme is 60x100 cm.However, in order to increase the percentage of germination, 2-3 seeds are sown per hole. If all the seeds germinate, they leave one that looks the strongest, the rest are removed.
Hugo's hybrid is short, so he doesn't need a garter. Crop care includes only watering, loosening, and regular feeding. As for watering, they should be rare, but abundant. In a very hot summer, watering should be increased. At the end of the irrigation procedure or after rain, it is recommended to loosen the ground around the bushes. Loosening must be done very carefully, since the root system of the hybrid variety is superficial.
Hugo's squash must be fertilized 3 times during the growing season: at the beginning of the growing season, during flowering and ovary formation, as well as fruiting.
Disease and pest resistance
Hybrid variety Hugo has a fairly strong resistance to the most common ailments of zucchini. It successfully resists both fungal and bacterial diseases. Despite this, it is worth carrying out preventive spraying with fungicides and insecticides.
