Beds made of PVC pipes
A small plot of land, with competent and rational use, will give the hardworking gardener an excellent result in the form of a rich harvest. The increase in productivity is achieved by intensive and reasonable use of the ground surface, for example, by arranging horizontally placed beds and equipping vertical space above the soil. Thanks to this solution, it is possible to place the planting material in several tiers.
Advantages and disadvantages
Modernization in order to increase yields in agriculture involves financial costs for the purchase of new or the use of previously purchased materials. Beds with PVC pipes are popular among gardeners, with the help of which unnecessary liquid waste can be removed without problems. However, they require some money to create, which is the only drawback of such a design.
There are many more advantages due to obvious factors.
- Investments are disposable and long-term - the service life of plastic products is measured in tens of years.
- The mobility of such beds allows you to move them to another place, planting the plants again. This is especially important when redeveloping a garden or when moving to another site. The labor costs of moving the beds of PVC pipes with the ground are within the power of one person of average physical development. In case of frost, the seedlings are easily transferred to a warm room, which protects the plants from adverse climatic changes.
- The bed itself is very compact and does not take up much space. The number of bushes that can be planted is limited only by material well-being and design talents. Vertically and horizontally located beds can accommodate up to hundreds of copies.
- Facilitated harvesting will clearly delight gardeners and gardeners, because the berries, uncontaminated by soil particles and debris from the soil, will be collected above ground level.
- Manufacturability of removing weeds and planting maintenance reduces the cost of the garden.
- The epidemiological well-being of plants is definitely considered a plus - it is much easier to remove affected plants in the same bed, preventing the spread of diseases.
- It is much more difficult for pests and birds to get close to fruits and berries.
Varieties
You can make a bed of PVC pipes of any shape and size, but they are all divided into 2 types - horizontal and vertical.
Horizontal
The beds of this type are located at the same height. They take up more space, but due to their design, they provide plants with a lot of sunlight, delighting everyone in the end with the taste and size of the fruits.
Beds made of plastic pipes make it possible to more efficiently load a unit of area. It is more convenient to plant traditional early cucumbers in horizontal beds, for strawberries it is better to make plastic suspended ones (when horizontally located pipes are attached to reliable supports at different levels) or vertical ones, if one end is buried in the ground.
Vertical
A bed is considered vertical when the plants on it are located at different levels - one above the other. Such designs clearly take up less space and are much easier to make. Most often, the substrate on such a bed is not introduced into the ground, but is limited from all sides by boards, logs, stones and other building materials for fencing, that is, an analogue of retaining walls is built.
At first, organic materials are laid at the base - compost, humus, fertilized soil. The content, decomposing, forms fertilizers and generates heat, which is so necessary for plants on cold nights.
Highly located planting material may be the only opportunity for gardening in areas with an elevated groundwater horizon.
How to do it yourself?
For the manufacture of a high-tech vegetable garden with vertical strawberry beds, PVC sewer pipes with a diameter of 110 to 200 mm and polypropylene pipes with a diameter of 15–20 mm are needed. The latter will be used for irrigation, preferably drip.
First, they cut the pipe with a hacksaw or jigsaw according to a previously drawn up scheme. Usually, two-meter parts are used, which are buried half a meter into the ground for the stability of the structure. When installed directly on the ground, the size adjusts to the height of the owners of the site to ensure ease of harvesting. If funds are available, you can purchase additional tees and crosses, and then assemble a single wall of arbitrary configuration of large sizes.
Holes with indents of 20 cm are made on the side wall of the plastic with a crown nozzle and an electric drill. In structures with support on the wall, the holes are placed in one row from the front side, in unsupported ones they are drilled in a checkerboard pattern.
For irrigation, a thin pipe is used, the size of which is 10 cm larger. Its lower part is closed with a plug, the upper third is perforated with a 3-4 mm drill at regular intervals. The reamed fragment is wrapped in a water-permeable synthetic fabric and fixed with copper wire, after which it is placed exactly in the center of the large pipe. The annular space is filled 10-15 cm with fine gravel, then it is filled with fertile soil to the top. And only after that the workpiece is buried in the ground.
.
To increase the stability of the bed, you can make a reinforcing external structure, fixing on which will allow you to put the bed directly with its end on the ground
Planting nests are planted with seedlings such as herbs or strawberries.
Making horizontal beds from sewer pipes is similar to vertical ones.
The PVC pipe is perforated with a crown of the specified size every 20 cm, and then both ends are closed with plugs. A hole for an irrigation pipe is made in the center of one cover, a fitting is installed in the second, which is used to drain excess water with a hose into an installed container.
The drainage layer (more often expanded clay) occupies a third of the height, then the soil is filled up to half, on which the irrigation pipe is laid. After that, filling with soil continues to the very top. High supports are welded under horizontal beds for single or group placement, while observing the correct north-south orientation. It is better to arrange work on the modernization of the garden in the fall, since in the spring you need to have time to plant the plants.
Watering can be done traditionally from a watering can, but this process is quite laborious and outdated. Two automated ways of supplying water for irrigation are used in modernized beds: under pressure generated by an electric water pump, or by gravity.
An economically viable option is to use rainwater collected in a collecting tank. Having connected the water supply thin pipes with hoses, fittings are installed on the protruding parts, and then the regulating water tap is cut in. This can greatly reduce the hassle of watering a large cultivated area. In the irrigation water, you can dilute fertilizers and add trace elements with it for feeding.
Using a pump is not so profitable - buying it and paying for electricity can cost a lot. However, its advantages are good news.If there is a pump, it becomes possible to automate the irrigation process by installing sensors with a time mode, as well as organize control using a computer.
