Pear Quiet Don is practically perfect. A variety for aesthetes, a dream variety. The pear has very few disadvantages, and the advantages are bright, distinguishing it from a number of others.
Breeding history
The variety was bred at the Rossoshansk Experimental Gardening Station. The nursery specializes in the most delicious varieties of apple, pear, plum, apricot, cherry and other fruit crops. The parents of the variety are Rossoshanskaya beautiful and Marble. Both of these cultivars were born at the same station, have a lot of interesting characteristics, but their brainchild surpasses them in many ways. Pear Tikhy Don was included in the Russian State Register of Varieties in 2004.
Description of the variety
Medium-sized tree, up to 3 m tall, with a slightly weeping crown. Crown density is medium. Skeletal branches are obliquely vertical, shoots are straight. The foliage is medium in size, dark green, glossy, on petioles of medium length and thickness. The bark is gray, the young twigs are gray-brown. Buds are brown, protruding. Flowers of medium size, white, with closed petals, collected in large umbrella-shaped brushes, 8 pcs.
Fruit characteristics
Fruits are wide, round, very large, on average 270 g, some can reach 350 g. Fruit stalks are not long, but thick and strong. The color of pears at the stage of consumer ripeness is green-yellow, as if singed with a bright crimson-red blush. The blush is large, it can occupy half of the surface of the fruit and more. The subcutaneous dots are green or orange-yellow, numerous, clearly visible. The pulp is oily, tender, creamy white. The skin is firm. Pears lie perfectly, have high commercial qualities: even, calibrated, beautiful. The assessment of the appearance is the highest - 5 points.
Taste qualities
The taste is sweet, with sourness and slight astringency. The tasting score is very high - 4.8 points. The pear is great fresh, but it is also suitable for processing: compotes, juices, preserves, marmalades, candied fruits, jams, assorted fruits. It is excellent in dried form and can be used to make wines.
Ripening and fruiting
The variety is autumn, the fruits are ready for harvest from September 1 to 15, they reach consumer ripeness in the period from September to November. The fruits do not crumble, after removal they are able to lie for 2.5-5 months.
Yield
The yield is very high - 418 c / ha, up to 70 buckets from 1 tree annually. Early maturity is common for autumn varieties of pears - the seedling will begin to bear fruit in the 5-6th year from the moment of grafting.
Growing regions
The Tikhy Don variety is grown in the Central Black Earth Region. The variety has good winter hardiness, drought resistance is also good, but only in comparison with other zoned pears. The parents of the variety, for example, Marble, can be grown in the Central region, and the beautiful Rossosh is better only in the south of the Central Black Earth region. The result of crossing them turned out to be intermediate. The Tikhy Don variety does not withstand the frosts of the Moscow region, but practically does not freeze out in the Tambov, Lipetsk or Kursk regions.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
The variety is self-fertile, it will not bear fruit without pollinating neighbors. The best varieties for planting nearby are his parents: Marble, Dessertnaya Rossoshanskaya. But other varieties with the same fruiting period will do.
Landing
The pear is no different in planting from other varieties. It is compact enough, but between the trees they stand at least 4-5 meters, with the expectation that the soil area per plant is at least 16 square meters. m. Only in this case, you can count on maximum yields.
The area for planting pears should be light, windless, with a low level of groundwater. It is better to exclude low-lying, swampy, damp places at once. 3 months before planting, planting holes are dug 70 cm deep and 1 m wide. Several buckets of humus, 1 glass of superphosphate, 1 glass of ash are poured onto the bottom, loosened. Before planting, a mound of nutritious soil is poured, the roots of the seedling are straightened, the earth is poured, while slightly shaking the plant. The soil around is well crushed. After planting, they are thoroughly watered, the trunk circle is mulched.
Growing and caring
In the first 5 years, formative pruning of the pear is performed. Then rejuvenating and sanitary pruning will be needed. The variety is weak, with not too active shoots. If the plant blooms in the 3-4th year, it is better to cut off all the flowers so that the tree can grow.
The pear tolerates droughts well, does not tend to crush the fruits, but for better yields it is better to provide the tree with regular and abundant watering - for adult fruit-bearing trees at least 4 per season. Young plants are watered once a week, then once every 2 weeks, increasing the intervals between waterings every year. A good help for busy gardeners will be mulching the soil or sowing row spacings with grasses. The second method is good as a soil enrichment method, but is suitable for fairly humid climates.
The scab resistance of the variety is exceptional, but septoria and pear sap are dangerous for it.
For the prevention of fungal and bacterial diseases, you can use "Fitosporin".
Like any other fruit trees, the pear needs protection from various diseases and pests. When planting a pear on your site, you need to know in advance what diseases you should beware of. To successfully carry out the struggle, it is necessary first to correctly identify the cause of the problem. It is important to distinguish signs of disease from manifestations of the presence of insects, mites, caterpillars and other types of pests.
