Guidon is a well-known prince from Pushkin's fairy tale, and it was in his honor that one of the pear varieties was named. The summer pear Guidon is a favorite of Russian gardeners, since it does not need complex care and perfectly resists a variety of diseases.
Breeding history
The originators of this variety are Kotov and Tarasova, and all the work on the development of the subspecies was carried out on the basis of the Sverdlovsk selection station of gardening. The cultivar was obtained by using free pollination of the Sentyabrskaya Zabava variety. The pear was approved for use in 2008.
Description of the variety
The pear tree is fast growing, but it does not grow taller than 3.5 meters. This allows us to speak about the average height of the culture. The crown is shaped like a pyramid with a wide base. Shoots not too long, compact, arch-like. The edges are clearly visible on them. Shoots have a shade close to olive green.
The foliage is medium-long, rather large. The smooth surface of the plates is dark green in color. Guidon's inflorescences are distinguished by a large number of flowers. The latter are small, painted in a classic white tone.
Fruit characteristics
Pears that are ready to be harvested have a standard weight of 120 grams, but sometimes the parameters can fluctuate. There are copies of both 100 and 140 grams. The fruits are pear-shaped, their shape is correct, classic. The skin is yellow. Under it is a semi-oily pulp, characterized by tenderness and juiciness. Her color will be yellowish. On the surface of the fruit, subcutaneous points are perfectly visible. There are many of them, and they are all gray in color. Each fruit has a rather thick stalk.
Taste qualities
Like most pear varieties, Guidon has a delicate grainy flesh. It is sweet with a pleasant sourness. The pulp emits a delicate aroma. The experts gave the taste 4.2 points.
Ripening and fruiting
Gardeners who first planted Guidon on the site should expect a harvest for only 4 years. This is a feature of the variety. In the future, the pear will bear fruit regularly, without delay.
The plant belongs to the summer varieties. The fruits must be removed in early September. Moreover, they should be eaten or processed as soon as possible, since 14 days is the maximum shelf life, and even then only if all conditions are met.
Yield
Despite the fact that the tree is not distinguished by high growth rates, it gives stable and rich yields. One plant will give about 50-55 kilograms of pears, and up to 248 centners of fruit can be removed from a hectare.
Growing regions
Guidon is recommended to be grown in the Volga-Vyatka region. However, this variety is also suitable for other areas, since it has good winter hardiness and unpretentiousness to cultivation conditions.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
The plant is a self-fertile variety, so the fruit will appear on it without the presence of pollinators. But if the goal is to get twice the yield, then pollinating partners are a must.Pear varieties such as Amazon and Paris are well suited. In addition, apple trees with the same flowering period can be planted nearby.
Landing
It is necessary to grow Guidon in areas well lit by the sun. It is best to place the tree in the center of the garden, away from fences and tall crops. The soil should be nutritious, loose, without a high groundwater table.
Spring disembarkation is recommended for Guidon. The soil for planting is prepared in the fall, carefully digging up and fertilizing. The hole should not be too large, commensurate with the volume of the roots. Humus and ash must be placed in the hole. When planting a seedling, care must be taken that the root collar remains 60 mm above ground level. After the end of the work, the seedling is cut from above so that its length is no more than 90 cm. The soil should be thoroughly moistened.
Growing and care
The main point of caring for Guidon is pruning. With the help of it, it will be possible not only to maintain a healthy appearance of the tree, but also to form a beautiful crown. Shoots, the growth of which is directed towards the inside of the crown, should be cut off, as they contribute to thickening. The main skeleton of a tree is formed as follows: first, they work with multidirectional shoots of tier 1 (no more than 5 are left), and then with branches of tier 2 (there should be no more than 7 pieces here). In addition, you need to regularly cut off weak and diseased branches, as well as small branches that thicken the crown.
Watering Guidon follows from a hose or bucket, sprinkling is inappropriate. One tree will need 10-15 buckets. Such a large amount of water means that it is rarely necessary to irrigate the crop. In the spring, this is not done at all, and in the summer months, watering is carried out during the formation of pears. After harvesting, water-charging irrigation is carried out, which is mandatory for the wintering period.
As for fertilizers, they are rarely required for this variety. Basically, these pears may lack nitrogen. It will be easy to understand by the light color of the sheet plates. Both mullein and urea can become nitrogen fertilizer. Trees may need to be fed during flowering to get larger fruits. To do this, take a phosphorus-potassium mixture, as well as an ash solution.
For wintering, mulch is mandatory laid in the trunk circle. It will save moisture. In cold areas, the tree will also need to be wrapped in burlap.
Like any other fruit trees, the pear needs protection from various diseases and pests. When planting a pear on your site, you need to know in advance what diseases you should beware of. To successfully carry out the struggle, it is necessary first to correctly identify the cause of the problem. It is important to distinguish signs of disease from manifestations of the presence of insects, mites, caterpillars and other types of pests.
Review overview
Gardeners leave positive reviews about Guidon pear. The tree rarely gets sick, and the harvest from it is excellent. Cultivation is not difficult even for beginners, and in terms of winter hardiness, this variety is among the leaders. Nevertheless, many are upset by the poor keeping quality of pears and their extremely poor transportability.
