The healthy and tasty fruits of the pear tree deserve the attention of many gardeners. In ancient times, from the territory of modern Georgia, this type of sweet fruit began to spread throughout all regions of the planet. Now about 5 thousand different varieties of pears are known, created by breeders from different countries. It can be difficult for amateur gardeners to decide on the choice of a variety for planting on their site. Experienced agronomists recommend a pear called August dew for cultivation in the southern and central regions of the Russian Federation.
Breeding history
The pear variety Avgustovskaya dew appeared quite recently, in the early 2000s, on the basis of the All-Russian Research Institute of Genetics and Breeding of Fruit Plants named after V.I. Michurin. The authors of the new masterpiece of domestic selection were a group of scientists headed by S.P. Yakovlev.They conducted experiments on crossing the Australian Triumph Pakgama pear, which is distinguished by excellent taste, with the hardy and frost-resistant Russian variety Tenderness. The result was a new variety Avgustovskaya Dew, which combined all the best characteristics of its predecessors. In 2002, a new type of pear was successfully tested and was recommended for cultivation in the Central Black Earth Region.
Description of the variety
In addition to bountiful harvests, the pear will delight gardeners with the beauty of a graceful silhouette. The tree grows up to 3 meters in height, has a not too dense, drooping crown. The branches are straight, covered with a delicate gray bark, located at an acute angle to the main trunk. Dark green elliptical leaves grow on them, forming a rounded and neat crown. The tree enters the flowering period beautifully and abundantly in the last spring month. The number of ovaries depends on the weather conditions that affect the activity of pollinating insects. The tree quickly grows a mass of crown-forming branches, releasing new shoots every year. Pears are distinguished by their excellent taste and good appearance.
Fruit characteristics
In addition to the decorative benefits of a growing tree, gardeners are interested in the quality of the fruit that can be expected from it when choosing seedlings. The fruits of the August dew are noticeable in size, on average from 100 to 200 grams. On each tree, the fruit grows basically the same, classic smooth shape and weight. Small, whitish dots are visible under the yellowish, thin skin. In predominantly sunny weather, a ruddy color appears on the sides facing the south side. A fine-grained mass inside the fruit surrounds a small seed chamber.
Taste qualities
According to the assessment of the tasting committee, the taste of the variety received 4.5 points on a five-point scale. The white pulp of the fruit has a rare and harmonious combination of sweetness with hints of light sourness.When fully ripe, pears are one of the best table varieties with a delicate and juicy pulp that spreads a delicate aroma of freshness. The composition of the fruit is a combination of a set of vitamins useful for the body with a high content of sugars, pectin, arbutin and triactive elements.
Ripening and fruiting
The new hybrid pears ripen in late summer or early autumn, depending on the growing region. In the regions located to the south, the first ripe fruits can be harvested already for the national harvest festival - Apple Savior. The unpretentious trees of the August dew bear fruit even with little care, but the correct agrotechnical measures affect not only the quantity, but also the weight of each fruit. Practice shows that good living conditions for a tree have a positive effect on its productivity. Young trees begin to form ovaries from the age of 3, but in order to preserve the strength of the tree for growth in the first years, the flowers are removed. Abundant fruiting usually occurs from 4 years old.
Yield
Many gardeners believe that the first ripe fruit that falls from the tree is the sign of pear harvesting. Other site owners tend not to wait for this moment, but to collect still hardy fruits 2-3 weeks ahead of time, and put them in a cool place for storage and slow ripening. In the first years of growth, up to 20 kg of ripe pears can be harvested from one young tree, and 10 times more from an adult. At the same time, all fruits have a standard shape and excellent commercial qualities. The harvest is complete in September, and many of the fruits must be plucked from the trees, as strong stalks securely attach them to the trunk.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
For a good yield, the pear of the Augustovskaya Dew variety needs a pollinator growing nearby. Due to the low self-pollination rate, when buying seedlings of a new hybrid in the nursery, it is necessary to select a tree with which pollination will take place. The best for this purpose may be a common variety called Pamyati Yakovlev.
Landing
When choosing a suitable place for planting pear seedlings August dew, one must pay attention to the moisture content and composition of the soil. The hybrid variety does not tolerate swampy and dark areas, preferring sunny, open areas with light, fertilized soil. Sandy and loamy soils must be reclaimed before planting. The pear tolerates frost well below -30 degrees, so it can be planted in autumn and early spring. When planting in spring, it is important not to be late with the dates, since the summer heat will have a worse effect on the survival rate of young plants than frosts.
Fertilizers must be applied to the prepared hole, including:
a bucket of humus or compost;
100 grams of potassium sulfate;
250 grams of superphosphate.
All mineral additives are mixed with the top fertile soil layer. A wooden peg is driven into the prepared hole, then a seedling with straightened roots is placed on the bottom, and sprinkled with earth with fertilizer. The variety reproduces well by layering, and trees obtained in this way begin to bear fruit earlier than grafted ones. When planting in a regular garden for one August pear tree, it is necessary to allocate an area of at least 3x5 m.
Growing and care
For all the unpretentiousness of the tree, it needs minimal agrotechnical care, which consists in loosening and watering the trunks. It is necessary to dig up the soil in the root zone 5-7 times during the season. Periodically, this is combined with the application of fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate, potassium salt and superphosphate. In dry periods, it is necessary to water the trees, not allowing them to dry out too much. August dew has genetic immunity against many types of diseases of pome trees, but prophylactic treatment with conventional drugs can be carried out.
Like any other fruit trees, the pear needs protection from various diseases and pests. When planting a pear on your site, you need to know in advance what diseases you should beware of. To successfully carry out the struggle, it is first necessary to correctly identify the cause of the problem. It is important to distinguish signs of disease from manifestations of the presence of insects, ticks, caterpillars and other types of pests.
