Gladiolus is a herb of the Iris family. Its other name is the skewer, which more describes the appearance of the flower. Stems are single, even, with xiphoid leaf plates. Inflorescences are either one-sided or double-sided or spiral. The plant is grown mainly in the open field in flower beds and for cutting.

Overview of popular species

The species diversity of gladioli is quite large. Varieties differ in both appearance and habitat.

Swamp

Under natural conditions, representatives of this species prefer swampy areas of meadows. You can meet them in the Balkans, in the northern regions of Italy and Central Europe. The plants have slender, tall shoots of 30-60 cm, on which rich purple flowers about 3 cm long are formed in summer. The buds form rare one-sided inflorescences. The leaf plates are narrow, linear, grow in the amount of 2-3 pieces, the length is up to 20 cm.

They are planted in rock gardens, as well as as a design for reservoirs.

Byzantine

In nature, it is found in meadows and in the tides of the Mediterranean and the countries of Asia Minor. The buds are most often purple or crimson, a white stripe runs along the main vein, and may have a border of the same light. One-sided inflorescences are rather large in size, they consist of about 20 flowers. In height, the shoots reach 45-60 cm, the leaves are xiphoid. This species is distinguished by its unpretentiousness and frost resistance, prefers places with good lighting and loose soil.

Needs a little shelter for the winter. Planted in the form of curbs.

Kochi

The species grows in the meadows of Iran, Afghanistan and South Transcaucasia. It is characterized by a high, strong stem 35-60 cm. The inflorescences are short, consisting of 5-8 buds. They are painted in dark purple and violet tones. The flowering period falls in the spring.

The leaf plates are narrow, linear, reaching 20-30 cm in length. The species is planted in mixborders and ridges.

Prefers areas with sufficient lighting, frost-resistant.

Do not plant this species on clayey soils.

Sowing

Shoots, reaching a length of 50–80 cm, are characterized by strength, although rather thin. Bell-shaped buds have different colors: from pale lilac to pinkish, there are also specimens with other shades. The inflorescence is loose, formed from 8-10 flowers.

For the winter, the species needs to be covered, with the exception of the southern regions. Often used to decorate mixborders.

Tiled

Prefers dry meadows of Europe, also occurs in the territories from the Crimea to the Caucasus. With the onset of summer, small buds of different shades of purple appear on the stems (30–80 cm), although specimens with a white color can also be found. The inflorescence is short, one-sided, approximately 5-14 flowers. The leaf plates are linear, with weakly expressed veins, reaching a length of 30 cm. The species differs in low demand and good winter hardiness.

Often planted in mixborders.

Colville

The hybrid species is characterized by small flowers and rather early bud formation, which begins with the beginning of spring. Shoots grow up to 90 cm.The flowers are funnel-shaped, about 5 cm long, can be painted in white, pink or bright crimson with white spots.

Dwarf

The species is referred to as Dutch hybrids. Stems are thin, short (35–40 cm), but rather strong. The flowers have an irregular shape, the petals of the upper row are much wider than those of the lower one. The inflorescence is rather loose, the number of flowers from which it is formed is up to 10 pieces. The color of the buds is predominantly light tones, in the central part of the flower there is a dark mark in the form of a rhombus.

The species blooms around July.

Tubergen

Dutch species with stems about 75 cm in height. The leaf plates of the plant are rather narrow in shape, the buds are medium, form loose inflorescences of small sizes. Often grown for cutting.

Hybrid varieties

This species includes all hybrid varieties that bloom in summer. Its representatives have a sufficient height - 0.9–2 m. Flowers have different sizes, their parameters vary from 5 to 20 cm. The colors can also be varied: monochromatic, with several shades, or with strokes and spots on the petals. The edges of the latter can also have a different appearance: smooth, wavy, or corrugated.

The buds are collected in rather large inflorescences, sometimes consisting of more than 20 flowers. Among such varietal varieties, there are a lot of specimens of Russian selection, which, unlike the Dutch ones, have strongly corrugated edges. Hybrid varieties are distinguished by good adaptability to cultivation conditions, therefore, they are suitable for growing in different climatic zones. But for the winter, the bulbs must be dug out, since the plants are not distinguished by winter hardiness.

Representatives of this variety are most often grown in flower beds and for cutting, mainly because of their bright decorative appearance and endurance.
