Heuchera hybrid: description, varieties, recommendations for growing
A real miracle of nature - herbaceous plants for open ground, which can change the color of the leaves several times per season. One of them is Heuchera. Designers have been using it for a long time to create decorative landscapes, decorate flower beds, lawns.
Description
Geykhera is a representative of the Kamnelomkovs, belongs to perennials. Bushes are compact, grow from 20 to 50 cm, depending on the variety. Spectacular leaves with different shapes are of decorative value: wavy, rounded, carved.
In its natural environment, Heuchera lives in rocky mountain areas, sometimes found along the banks of rivers. In America, there are 32 types of Heuchera, and in Mexico - 5 types. All of them are combined in the name Heuchera hybrid.
Some plant species are found even in extreme areas for growing, for example, on the rocky shores of the Channel Islands and in the warm dry canyons of Arizona.
The best varieties
Among the many varieties, several are particularly popular. They are rich in color and are especially appreciated by gardeners.
- Electra. Resistant to the first frost, unpretentious care. It grows well in one place for 3-5 years. Blossoms with small white flowers in panicle inflorescence. During the season, the leaves gradually change from a bright yellow color with green veins to yellow-green.
- Marveles Marble Silver received in 2009 by Syngenta. The height of the bush is up to 60 cm. At the beginning of the season, the leaves have a velvety-purple color, in summer they are green, and by the beginning of autumn they acquire a rich dark green color with a silvery coating and reddish-purple veins. Flowers are small, pale cream shade. In comparison with other varieties, they bloom a little earlier.
The total height, together with the peduncles, can reach 90 cm. The variety is notable for being suitable for cutting bouquets, and the leaves can stand in a vase of water for up to 2 years. The main thing is to pour fresh water into the vase once a week.
- Grape Soda. This hybrid was bred in 2014. The bushes are short, compact, reaching a height of 25 cm, and up to 50 cm in width. The leaves are colored dark pink in early spring, and by autumn they become purple with a silver tint. Flowering time from May to August, flowers are light pink with a purple tinge collected in panicles 45 cm "Grape soda" refers to fast-growing hybrids. In a short time, with the help of these plants, dense borders can be formed.
In landscape design, they are used in flower beds, rockeries and rabatki. It goes well with irises, bells, primroses and low decorative grasses.
- Cherry Cola. The color of the leaves is bright red, the flowering period is from late May to August. For the winter, the plants do not shed their foliage, therefore they decorate the garden until late autumn. Blossoms with small red flowers in panicle inflorescence.
- Fire Alarm. Among all Heucher, this is the most striking hybrid. Released in 2014. The color of the leaves in early summer is red-brown, bright red in autumn. The variety is resistant to heat and frost. The flowering period is from July to October. It tolerates winter colds down to -34 °.
- "Mars". Small compact bushes up to 20 cm high with velvety wavy leaves of a light green hue. By summer, they acquire a light crimson color with a silvery coating, and towards autumn they become brown. Mars blooms with white small flowers, flowering period 2 months. The hybrid has good winter hardiness.
- "Caramel". Bush height 45-50 cm, a distinctive feature of the variety - large yellow leaves. The flowers are cream-colored bells.
- Rio. The plants are low, only up to 20 cm, the bush grows up to 40 cm wide. The leaves are pink in spring, burgundy in summer, and turn yellow by autumn. Inflorescence panicle, white flowers.
- Melting Fire. Carved wavy purple leaves. Bushes are dense, low, compact. The variety looks good not only in contrasting group plantings, but also in single ones. Used to decorate borders, flower beds.
- Heuchera Zipper with large carved leaves of a golden hue and cream-colored flowers.
- Apple crisp with green leaves and white flowers. It will bloom from June to September.
- Georgia Plum variety it is distinguished by rounded leaves of a pink hue, which turns into purple over the course of the season. Small flowers of pink-purple color.
- "Extinguishing Fire". This hybrid has beautiful red-black leaves with a purple tint. Thanks to this unusual color, the hybrid is able to decorate any garden.
- Cajun fire. Plants up to 25 cm high with bright red leaves. During the season, they turn black and red and then burgundy. The flowers are pink-white.
- "Tiramisu"... The leaves of this hybrid change color radically during the growing season. In spring they are yellow with a pink center, smoky-silvery in summer, and red in autumn.
- Forever Purple differs in purple leaf color, which is replaced by eggplant. The flowers are pale pink.
Growing recommendations
There are some rules.
- Site selection. Plants prefer loose, light, well-drained soils with a Ph closer to neutral. Therefore, when preparing the site, add sand and gravel to the soil. Better to choose open sunny areas or in the shade of small trees.
- Landing... Saplings are planted in May 20 cm apart.
- Watering. It is best to water the plants at the root. In hot weather, water it 2-3 times a week. It is advisable to mulch the soil under the bushes.
- Care... Dried leaves and faded flowers should be removed during the flowering season. For the winter, the bushes are spud, the leaves are not cut off. From above, the flower bed is covered with dry foliage, you can cover it with spruce branches. In the spring, the shelter is removed, the old leaves are cut off.
