Champion lawn mowers are well known to Russian consumers and are in high demand. The units are distinguished by an optimal ratio of price and quality, which makes it possible to purchase reliable equipment for relatively little money.

Features, pros and cons

Champion lawn mowers are supplied by a Chinese company with the active participation of the American firm Briggs & Stratton. Manufacturing plants are located in Taiwan, but parts and components are supplied from different countries of the world: USA, India and France. The company appeared on the world market relatively recently - in 2005, but it was immediately appreciated by consumers and became a leader among manufacturers of garden equipment.

Many technologies used for the production of Champion mowers are patented by the Swedish company Husqvarna, which only confirms their high quality and reliability. The main purpose of Champion lawnmowers is mowing lawns, mowing grass stands and mulching thin lignified bushes. Due to the presence of several operating modes, the mower can throw the cut grass to the side, collect it in a grass catcher or finely mulch and scatter it over the area as a vegetable fertilizer.

The high popularity of Champion lawn mowers is due to a number of important advantages of this garden technique.

  • The units consist of certified components and are of high quality assembly.
  • A wide model range is represented by a wide variety of mowers of different power and functionality, which allows you to purchase a unit in accordance with the size of the site and the complexity of the work.
  • All lawn mowers have a large collector volume, which increases the uptime of the machine. In the process of work, the operator does not need to constantly monitor the fullness of the container and empty it in a timely manner.
  • The cost of Champion equipment compares favorably with the cost of models of other well-known brands, which makes the units even more in demand.
  • The company manufactures lawn mowers operating from different energy sources, which makes it possible to choose the most suitable option.
  • All mower models are equipped with large passable wheels, allowing you to work on difficult terrain.
  • Lawn mowers have a foldable handle, so they can be transported in the trunk of a car. In addition, when folded, the models are quite compact and do not pose storage problems.
  • Some Champion units are self-propelled. This makes the mower much easier to operate and makes it more maneuverable.

But, like any other technique, Champion lawn mowers still have drawbacks. These include the low power of electric models and the high gas mileage of powerful units equipped with internal combustion engines.

Types and their structure

Today Champion manufactures electric and gasoline powered lawn mowers. Below is an overview of the varieties and their technical characteristics.

Gasoline Lawn Mowers

These models are equipped with a four-stroke gasoline internal combustion engine and are characterized by high power and functionality. With their help, you can mow grass in the field and on rough terrain.Models have large passable wheels with ball bearings, and many of them are self-propelled. This significantly saves the operator's energy and eliminates the need for physical effort during work.

Gas mowers are ideal for large land areas up to 30 acres, which an electric mower or trimmer can no longer cope with. The units are equipped with a cutting height regulator, thanks to which they can operate in several modes.

The engines are equipped with an air-cooled system, manual starter and electronic ignition. Self-propelled models are rear-wheel drive and very obedient to drive. The working knife is located on the motor shaft and cuts the grass as it rotates. The handles of the mowers have a folding design, are fixed in two positions and are equipped with a comfortable rubber pad that prevents the operator's hands from slipping.

Thanks to the presence of a primer, the engine starts almost instantly. The disadvantages of gasoline models include a large weight, which is due to the presence of a fuel tank, and harmful exhaust into the atmosphere. In addition, heavy aggregates do not overcome bumps well, which is why they often mow not only the grass, but also cling to the sod.

The rims are made of plastic, which does not add strength to the unit.

Electric models

Electric lawn mowers are virtually silent and do not emit harmful substances into the environment. They operate from a power source with a voltage of 220 V and are designed to process adjoining territories with an area of up to 8 acres. The power of the electric motors is low and varies from 1 to 1.8 kW. The units are lightweight and very easy to operate. Unlike gasoline models, electric models do not require regular engine maintenance, oil changes, filters and spark plugs. The disadvantages of mowers with an electric motor include dependence on an electric power source and the inability to work in the field.

In addition, work with such units in wet weather is strictly prohibited.

Battery mowers

These models are equipped with an electric motor and are capable of running on battery power. The advantage of such units is the ability to work in the field, away from the power source. However, their service life is limited by the capacity of the battery, which is why the battery samples, of course, are inferior to the gasoline models. Among the disadvantages are a weak engine and the need for constant monitoring of the battery charge level. In addition, the presence of a battery makes the mower a little heavier.

Mechanical lawn mowers

These models are handcrafted designs designed for small lawns and lawns. In appearance, they resemble an ordinary cart, equipped with a drum with spiral knives built into it. The knives are connected to the wheels through gears, due to which the speed of their rotation is 4 times the speed of rotation of the wheels. As the cart moves, the spiral knives press the grass against the main knife, located just below, and cut it. Unlike rotary and gasoline models, hand mowers do not make any sounds at all during operation, are completely environmentally friendly and can be used in wet weather. Disadvantages include the need for physical effort and a small range of mowing heights.

The lineup

How to choose?

When choosing a lawn mower there are a number of important points to take into account.

  • For small electrified areas, electrical models should be chosen: they are economical, low noise, do not give strong vibrations, are easy to operate and do not pollute the environment.
  • For mowing forbs with an admixture of lignified shrubs, as well as for servicing large areas with uneven terrain, a powerful gasoline model will be the best choice.
  • Cordless mowers are suitable for cutting soft lawn grass on small lawns far from home. Such models are not suitable for processing large fields with complex vegetation.

Instructions for use

In order for the mower to last as long as possible, you need to learn how to properly operate it.

  • Read the instructions carefully before starting a new mower for the first time.
  • Before starting, you need to fill the unit with gasoline. Fill should be made with AI-92 or AI-95 fuel.
  • Next, you need to fill the oil using SAE 10W40 or SAE 30 engine oils. Subsequently, it must be changed every 25 hours of operation.
  • Then you need to manually pump up gasoline using the fuel pump lever and press the power button. The operating unit is set to the lowest power and left to work for 4 hours.
  • After running-in, the used oil is drained, and new oil is poured in its place.
  • Replace the air filter every six months or after every 50 hours of operation.
  • As for the operation of electrical models, it is necessary to strictly follow the safety rules: do not plug the damaged cord into the network and do not use the unit in wet weather.
  • The mower must be washed after use. To do this, a hose is connected to a special fitting, the unit is washed and the body parts are wiped dry.

Possible malfunctions

The most common lawn mower breakdowns are caused by the engine stalling or not starting. If such a situation has occurred with an electric mower, then it is quite possible that a rewinding of the engine or other complex repairs is required. It is unlikely that it will be possible to repair the unit yourself, so it is better to immediately contact the service. Another thing is gasoline models, which you can try to fix yourself.

So, the reason for the inoperative engine may be the lack of fuel in the tank, insufficient pressure on the primer, overflowing of the engine with gasoline, as well as the use of low-quality or old fuel. The engine can stall due to poor carburetor adjustment, clogged filter, or piston ring failure. If the unit began to chew the grass, then the point is dull knives.

And if in trimmers with a similar problem it is enough to wind new fishing line on a reel, then in lawn mowers it is necessary to remove and sharpen steel knives.

Review overview

Overall, the Champion mowers are very well received by customers. The owners note a wide price range, high quality and a long service life of Chinese products. Attention is drawn to the large number of service centers and the availability of spare parts. People love big wheels and simple machine handling. In addition, the knives are so strong that even if they accidentally hit a stone, they remain intact.

Of the minuses, the need for secondary processing of an area with too dense grass is often indicated. However, this only applies to low-power models that are unable to quickly cope with lush vegetation.

In the next video you will find a test drive of the Champion LM5345BS lawn mower.
