Today, according to the accepted classification, there are more than 8 dozen types of phlox. The most popular among gardeners are as follows.

Douglas

A flowering plant from the genus Phlox, whose homeland is considered to be North America. The plant owes its name to its discoverer - D. Douglas. In its natural environment, the culture grows on slopes and in rocky areas, the flower grows well in arid soils. In appearance, the culture is similar to another representative of this family - subulate phlox. The flower is a herbaceous crop that grows in size up to 10-12 centimeters. It is a ground cover creeping phlox on which small leafy pads develop. The stems of this variety are open. The foliage is colored deep green, rather tough to the touch, and reaches a couple of centimeters in length.

In the flowering phase, small flowers are formed on phlox, the color of which can be lilac, purple, white, purple, pink, red. Capitate inflorescences develop together, 2-3 pieces each. Sometimes the flowers have dark eyes.

Douglas phlox enters the open-field flowering phase in early summer; some representatives of this culture, according to the description, are capable of re-flowering closer to August.

Gardeners grow this species mainly in loose soil with a high level of nutritional value. However, an excess of trace elements in most cases can adversely affect the appearance of the culture, since the plant will actively grow leaves, then flowering may not occur at all. Phlox prefers lighted areas in the garden; in the shade, the culture will die very quickly.

The flower has found its application in group plantings in rock gardens, rockeries, mixborders. Also, Douglas phlox is very often rooted along garden paths, creating flowering compositions with perennials and flowering bulbous crops. Coniferous crops are among the unwanted neighbors for phlox. The species is represented by 150 varieties, this number is regularly replenished.

Paniculate

A hybrid crop, today represented by a large varietal variety. The flowers are distinguished by the different color of their petals, the different shape of the inflorescences and the timing of flowering. The height of the culture can reach 150 centimeters, but on average, the varieties of this species do not increase in size to more than 60 centimeters.

Crops prefer diffused lighting in the area; in direct sunlight, phloxes develop extremely slowly.

The stems of the culture are erect, lignified by the end of summer. The flower has a fibrous root system, represented by a large number of thin shoots that can go 10-20 centimeters deep into the ground. In terms of the selection of the optimal type of soil, phlox paniculata does not stand out with increased demand, however, the plant will best bloom and grow in loose and moist soil.

In the presented varieties, the inflorescences can be painted in different shades and colors, most often the crops bloom red with orange flowers, there are lilac, pink and snow-white representatives of the species. Also among the varieties there are plants with two-color petals. The flowering phase lasts about one month, after which fruit-boxes with seeds develop on the phlox.

Drummond

Among the large number of species, this particular phlox is an annual crop, growing in its natural environment in the sandy soil of America. Today, thanks to the work of breeders, many varieties of this phlox have been obtained, which are divided into two broad groupsrepresented by dwarf plants and large-flowered crops.

Phlox develops with thin stems prone to branching, as a rule, their height is within half a meter. Leaves with a heart-shaped base grow in the lower part of the culture. There is pubescence on the shoots and green mass.

The flowers of an annual in the flowering phase exude a pleasant aroma, their color varies from white to purple, in the middle there may be eyes of a contrasting color. The flowering phase falls at the end of summer; in the fall, seed pods develop on the flowers.

Phlox can be grown outdoors or in hanging pots. In general, the culture is quite unpretentious to the conditions of detention, however, a drop to -5 degrees will be a critical mark for a flower.

Spread out

Another representative of the genus from North America, which in the wild can be found in mountainous areas, as well as in forests with high levels of humidity. Among florists and breeders, there are several more names for this species - wild blue carnation or Canadian phlox.

The plant reaches an average height of 30 centimeters, has a flexible stem. In the course of its development, the culture in the open field forms sods decorated with bright flowers. Phlox's green mass is dense, reaching 4-5 centimeters in length. The culture blooms with inflorescences, the diameter of which is 3 centimeters. The color of the flowers can be white, lavender, purple. Flowering is notable for the appearance of a large number of inflorescences on the plant, which retain their freshness for 2-3 weeks. The flowering phase occurs at the beginning of summer.

For a beautiful appearance, the culture is important for regular watering, as well as low marks on the thermometer. In swampy and shaded soil, the plant will quickly die. You can plant a crop near water bodies, forming compositions with tulips and daisies.

Subulate

In the wild, this species of phlox can be found in America. Most often, the culture grows on the slopes of the mountains, in places where the majority of the day will be dominated by partial shade. In some sources, this species is usually called a moss carnation. The flower itself grows on average up to 20 centimeters, due to the growth of green mass, forms a green carpet on the ground, decorated with attractive inflorescences.

The stems of the plant are recumbent, the foliage is narrow, its length reaches about 2 centimeters. On peduncles, a pair of flowers develops, the diameter of which does not exceed 3 centimeters. Phlox color can be white, pink, purple. Flowering is remarkable for its duration, usually beginning in May. By the end of summer, some crops enter the second phase, which can last for a month.

Phlox of this type is most often used by gardeners to decorate stone gardens and flower beds. The culture has high rates of frost resistance, and also tolerates drought well. For outdoor cultivation, it is best to root the flower in loose soil with a neutral acidity level. The root system is shallow, so the plant can also be grown in pots.

Now the culture is represented by a large number of varieties; new hybrid varieties are being bred all over the world.
