All about the density of plywood
Despite the fact that the construction market is full of various materials, there are still some that remain in demand to this day. These include plywood. This material has a wide range of applications and has excellent physical and technical parameters. One of the most important parameters of plywood, which determines its grade and quality, is the density indicator. It is this parameter that will be discussed in this article.
Peculiarities
Plywood refers to composite building materials, for the manufacture of which wood of various types is used. It consists of several layers of veneer, which are connected with a special adhesive. Like any other building material, plywood has certain properties. It is characterized by:
- strength;
- environmental friendliness;
- flammability;
- moisture resistance;
- excellent insulating properties, among which it is worth noting thermal conductivity and moisture permeability.
But the most basic parameter that consumers pay attention to when buying and using this material is its density. The specific gravity of plywood is the ratio of the weight of the material to its volume. It depends on what kind of veneer wood the material was made from. The sheet production process is controlled by regulatory documents: GOST 3916.1-96, 3916.2-96, 11539-83. They indicate the permissible value of the density of the material - from 300 kg per m³ to 700 kg per m³.
Density of different types of plywood
Based on the type of wood, plywood is classified by types, each of which is characterized by a certain density. Let's take a closer look at each species.
Birch
This tree has high strength, therefore plywood from it has excellent physical and technical parameters, belongs to a high grade. The surface of the product is smooth and beautiful. The specific gravity of a birch veneer product varies from 640 kg / m³ to 700 kg / m³. The scope of this type of material is wide and varied. It is used by:
- for the manufacture of a monolithic structure, for example, formwork;
- in the process of arranging flooring;
- for wall and ceiling cladding.
Birch plywood is ideal for high strength structures.
Laminated
This is one of the most popular and commonly used types. The thing is that the sheet consists not only of veneer, but also of protective layers of laminate. The material has excellent characteristics and properties. It is characterized by high mechanical strength and density, which ranges from 640 kg / m³ to 700 kg / m³.
Film faced plywood can be used:
- for the manufacture of formwork at construction sites;
- in the process of interior decoration;
- for arranging children's and sports grounds;
- for the installation of fences and billboards;
- for the production of packaging products;
- for covering car vans.
The material is characterized by wear resistance, a high level of moisture resistance, ease of installation and processing.
Coniferous
This species is made from coniferous trees. Since they contain a lot of resin, plywood is highly moisture resistant and practically does not rot. The density level of softwood plywood is approximately 550 kg / m³.
The scope of this material is quite wide:
- erection of frame and low-rise buildings and structures;
- automotive and shipbuilding - plywood sheaths the hulls of ships, cars, installs walls and floor coverings;
- furniture production - the material is ideal for the manufacture of cabinet furniture.
Also, coniferous plywood is used for wall decoration, creating decorative partitions indoors, and making reusable formwork for construction sites.
FC
FC - plywood with an average level of moisture resistance, which is used exclusively for interior work. The product has a fairly high density - 660 kg per m3. It is used in construction, in the furniture industry. Also, the material is used for finishing for vehicles, trade and exhibition equipment.
Which one to choose?
When choosing plywood, and its range is quite diverse today, it is imperative to take into account absolutely all properties, characteristics and parameters. To determine the required density, you need to consider:
- for what purposes the material is bought;
- in what weather conditions it will be used;
- load that will withstand.
Earlier in the article, we talked in detail about what types of products exist and what density is inherent in each of them, as well as about the field of application of the material with one or another density indicator. If you have any questions, you can always consult with a specialist, for example, in a hardware store where the purchase is made.
It is important to remember that the specific gravity of the product is influenced exclusively by the type of wood. But the adhesive composition, with the help of which the veneer layers are connected, have nothing to do with the formation of this parameter.
