When the owners of a private house are faced with the question of choosing an entrance door, a choice usually arises: to prefer a metal structure or to opt for a wooden option.
There is a common misconception that metal doors are stronger, more durable and warmer.
However, this cannot be said about every door that looks like metal.
There are a lot of inexpensive Chinese external doors on the domestic market, which, being installed outdoors, are covered with frost on the inside on cold days, “peel off”, losing their attractiveness, literally in the first months of operation, and do not contribute to heat saving indoors.
A wooden entrance door, comparable in cost to such a metal door, will at least be warmer, since wood has hundreds of times less thermal conductivity than metal.
For comparison, the thermal conductivity of oak is 400 mW / (m · K), while the thermal conductivity of steel is 52,000 mW / (m · K).
From these figures it is clear that in the heat, metal doors will heat up and begin to give off heat to the room, and in frost they will freeze much faster than wooden ones.
And in the event that zealous owners decide to purchase insulated wooden doors made using the technology "Sandwich", they can generally forget about heat loss when the door is closed. Similar designs stably protect interior rooms at a variety of temperatures, do not freeze even in severe frosts, thanks to the "layered" structure, they are provided with insulation along the outer contour and will additionally give the owners excellent sound insulation.
The external qualities of the door are also important. It is possible to make unique door structures from wood, which will become an adornment of the entrance and a source of pride for owners of a private house, while metal doors, at best, can only be decorated with wooden panels.
In terms of reliability, wooden entrance doors can be graded according to penetration levels and, like metal doors, are subdivided into resistance classes:
- It is impossible to open the door using physical force and simple tools;
- No hand tools can open a door;
- Hacking is not possible with a medium power tool;
- The maximum level of protection, resistance even from the use of small arms.
Materials (edit)
When choosing the materials from which a wooden entrance door should be made, the balance of price and quality is decisive for most buyers. Manufacturers offer a large selection of raw materials, which can be dealt with by studying the properties and characteristics of various price categories of wood.
Array
The most preferable option for the manufacture of entrance doors is an array, that is, a natural wood board or timber. Divide the massif of conifers and deciduous. Each of these categories has its own leading and outsider varieties, some types of wood are more preferable for the manufacture of external doors, and some are not worth choosing for this.
If we consider the varieties growing on the territory of Russia, then among the deciduous, the leading positions are occupied by oak, ash and white acacia, and for use as an entrance door, ash is even more preferable than oak for some indicators.
Maple, linden, walnut, alder can be called "middle" in this list. The use of beech for entrance doors is highly undesirable, since it is one of the most moisture-resistant wood species. Cherry is also undesirable for exterior door applications as it has low resistance to climatic changes.
Among conifers, the first place is shared by larch and cedar, and, if we talk about larch, then a prerequisite for the high strength of its wood is growth in the harsh Siberian climate. Larch cut in central Russia is much less valued.
Pine, which has a medium-soft wood, is also used for the manufacture of external doors, but with significant reservations regarding operating conditions. Solid spruce wood is not used for street doors.
Glued furniture beams
Another material from which reliable wooden entrance doors are made is glued laminated timber. When they talk about such a bar, they mean a monolith, obtained from separate spliced boards (lamellas), assembled in a package and pressed. This material is also called furniture beams. In Russia, its production is carried out from pine and spruce wood, less often from cedar or larch.
Thanks to this technology, it became possible to use some particularly capricious types of wood in the production of doors, for example, linden. In the form of a "pure" solid wood, this type of wood is almost never found due to the peculiarities of the structure of the trunk and the large abundance of knots.
Furniture timber is usually classified as a type of solid wood, since it is assembled from rather large fragments of the board, although its grade is lower due to the presence of glue.
LVL-bar
This type of timber cannot be considered solid wood, however, it has good user characteristics and may well serve as a material for the manufacture of entrance doors. The peculiarity of the structure of LVL is the gluing of numerous thin veneer layers into a single monolith: a bar or a slab. The raw material for the production of such a bar is most often coniferous wood. These are pine and spruce, which, thanks to this constructive technique, improve their working qualities, turning into a sufficiently hard and durable wood that can be used in humid and aggressive environments, for example, for street doors.
This material is currently produced at only two factories in Russia, therefore, it is still little familiar to the domestic buyer. On the cut, such a bar resembles a puff pie, therefore, it requires a mandatory coating. In order to give LVL doors an attractive appearance, they are pasted over with veneer of expensive wood species, such as oak, walnut or ash.
Such veneered doors can be installed both as interior doors and for the entrance to a private house, however, it is undesirable to expose them to the open effects of natural precipitation.
MDF
This material consists of compressed wood dust, shavings and lignin that sticks this mixture together. Since lignin is also obtained from wood waste, there is reason to say that MDF is an environmentally friendly material. The surface can be veneered, painted or treated with PVC foil.
It is not recommended to use it as a frame for entrance doors, since the layered structure of the material will quickly collapse under loads.However, this material can be used in combination with a construction made of LVL-beams, glued laminated beams, or as overlays on the surface of a door made of solid wood, the appearance of which does not suit for any reason.
Selection Tips
When purchasing a front door made of wood for a private house, first of all, you should focus on the fact in what climatic conditions it will be used.
In the case when we are talking about the temperate climate of the central zone of Russia, where winter frosts below -30 ° are rare, do not be puzzled by the search for an insulated sandwich door. You can simply purchase a high-quality door made of solid wood or laminated veneer lumber with a board thickness of 40 mm, with a built-in insulation cord along the contour.
It is worth knowing that cedar wood has the lowest thermal conductivity, followed by larch, linden, pine, ash, maple and oak. A cedar door is the best protection from both frost and sunlight.
Additionally, it is worth considering such a moment as the sensitivity of different types of wood to moisture. The least sensitive are cedar, larch, ash and acacia; pine tends to form mold, therefore it requires particularly careful drying and processing at the production stage. Oak is also susceptible to moisture.
For those regions where winters are accompanied by severe frosts, it is advisable to purchase an insulated structure. Sandwich doors are presented in stores in a sufficient assortment, but, if desired, they can be made to order.
Such a door has a special structure, thanks to which it is ideal as an entrance door. The outer surface is made of solid wood boards, often with panels or patterns, depending on the imagination of the master and the wishes of the customer. The size of such a board can be from 40 mm to 50 mm in reinforced versions. Inside such a structure, there is a cavity for insulation, which is covered with another sheet from the board (for some manufacturers, the inner side is made of MDF, which reduces the cost).
As insulation can be used:
- Minvata, which is not an ideal aggregate, as it tends to crumble and crumble, eventually forming unprotected areas, the so-called "cold bridges";
- Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene), which also has a number of disadvantages: in cold winters, condensation accumulates in it, leading to freezing and the appearance of mold, which ultimately leads to the destruction of the filler;
- Polyurethane, which is the highest quality insulation, since the polyurethane foam fills all the voids and has a service life of 50 years.
Also, for areas with a harsh climate, it is recommended to install vestibule door structures, one of which is insulated, and the second is thinner and has decorative significance.
There is always a layer of warm air between these doors, which provides maximum protection from the cold.

Examples and variants
Approaching the entrance to a country house, the visitor can imagine the interior premises by the appearance of the front door. And if it is elegant and made of high quality natural wood, it is easy to assume that the owner is a practical, sensible and tasteful person.
A beautiful rustic-style door made of solid wood, preserving the natural color of the wood, is able to add charm to even a modest brick house. Decorations in the form of forged flowers and an intricate overlay with a ring look appropriate and give the impression that the guest is in front of the door to an old tavern. A rough mat and wrought-iron torch holders on the sides of the door frame support this impression.The whole structure exudes solidity, reliability and elegant simplicity, since the design is not overloaded with decorative elements.
The semicircular entrance door to a country house, made of solid wood in wenge color, looks very worthy. The powerful door leaf has the usual rectangular shape and is decorated with six carved panels. A design feature is the presence of an arched transom at the top, designed in the form of a ventilation grill, due to the presence of which the modest door structure acquires additional height and sophisticated shapes. An indescribable charm is brought into this interior by a designer mirror located on the wall adjacent to the front door. It is also decorated in the form of an arch, decorated with fittings along the butt seams and just looks magical on a brick wall.
For windy and frosty winters, a blind sandwich door is the best choice.
Such doors usually do not shine with their external design, but they captivate with reliable protection from the cold.
