How to remove the door from the hinges correctly?
Every modern householder should be able to do a lot with his own hands in order to be able to save money on the services of professional craftsmen. For example, you need to know how to properly remove a door from its hinges, that is, to dismantle it. This simple skill will come in handy more than once in the future. First you need to decide on the meaning of the main term.
What is dismantling?
Removal of components from the place of their installation for the purpose of further disassembly into component parts or improvement (repair or modernization) is called dismantling. In other words, dismantling doors means removing them from the box by removing them from their hinges.
As a rule, the dismantling of door leaves is carried out for the following most common reasons:
- the need to replace or lubricate fasteners, hinges, locks and other accessories;
- the need to update obsolete or worn out profile panels;
- implementation of repair work in the premises;
- moving furniture, household appliances or other bulky items.
Required tools
At the initial stage of dismantling, the following minimum set of tools is prepared:
- hacksaw for metal;
- crowbar;
- hammer;
- axe;
- screwdriver;
- screwdriwer set;
- construction knife;
- pliers;
- set of spatulas;
- wide bar.
Loop types
For competent and accurate dismantling, it is important to know what type of fasteners you have to work with. There are three most common types of loops:
- Card. A familiar and inexpensive look, which, in turn, is also subdivided into categories:
- overhead butterflies that immediately join the canvas;
- mortise, fixed in the slopes.
- Screw-in (screw-in). They are long hairpins connected by a hinge (or spring). One such pin is inserted into the door, and the other into the jamb. Screw-in hinges are ideal for simple, lightweight designs.
- Hidden. Quite a popular and stylish version, the winning feature of which is the absolute invisibility of the fastening.
Dimensions (edit)
Before disassembling the box and dismantling, you need to take measurements so that later you can check the correctness of the installation of the previous structure in place, as well as correctly choose a new one. Taking measurements (width and height of the opening, as well as the deviation of the slopes from a straight plane) is carried out with a regular tape measure and a building level.
Measurements are recorded on paper, or they are immediately applied to an arbitrary drawing.
How to disassemble?
Dismantling of any doors, especially dismantling from hidden hinges (with rehau), should begin with disassembling the door frame and removing the platbands. They will interfere with the removal of the web.
To withdraw cash, you need to do the following:
- take a crowbar, using a hammer, carefully push its head under the plinth;
- pull the platband towards you, carefully tearing it off the wall.
To dismantle the folding accordion door, it is necessary to remove not only the side profiles, but also their guide, fixed on the upper slope of the opening. Sometimes it becomes necessary to remove the sandwich panel from the balcony door in order to replace it with a new one. To do this, you need to carefully remove the old profile.
This can be done as follows:
- take a flat screwdriver, shove it into the narrow groove between the fixing glazing beads and the canvas frame;
- peel off the glazing beads with light movements, remove the sandwich panel.
From various materials
Any kind of door leaf is freed, first of all, from accessories: eyes, armored and decorative overlays on keyholes, handles. Further actions depend on the specifics of the structure itself, the material from which it is made, and features. Double-glazed windows must be removed from doors made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This is done by the already known method of pushing back the glazing beads holding the glass. A knife is used.
Dismantling of double-glazed windows can be carried out by weight, without removing the plastic door from the hinges.
Fine fraction (MDF) options are analyzed more thoroughly. If there is a need to replace the outer profile, then the outer panel is removed from the doors with a pry bar. The front linings are also removed from the iron door, but not with a primitive crowbar-crowbar, but with an angle grinder, which is used to cut the welding seams. Steel is disassembled in the same way.
To disassemble a paneled door, you need to pull out the panel (decorative plywood plate or flat thin board) from the wooden frame, where it is inserted using special grooves, and then fixed with glazing beads. The veneered model, which is based on fine fractions, is disassembled in the same way as ordinary MDF doors. However, care must be taken to avoid damaging the delicate and fragile outer coating.
To replace glass
All that is required of you is to dismantle the old glass in order to put a new one in its place. As in the case of doors made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), this is done quite simply by pushing back the fixing strips (glazing beads) with a chisel.
This work should be done carefully, wearing gloves, otherwise you may injure yourself on the side sections of the glass.
For insulation
Remember the technology of disassembling a structure made of fine fractions, as well as steel and iron varieties. All that is needed is to free the canvas from the fittings, and then remove the outer panels.
Dismantling process step by step
All types of loops have a similar structure and principle of operation. They consist of a pair of plates, fixed to each other by a hinge or a spring, and are attached to the door frame and door leaf with self-tapping screws. However, for each type of fastener, its own individual algorithm is provided.
Dismantling the door on card hinges
Removing the canvas from overhead butterflies or mortise mountings is easier than ever, but it's still better to do this work with a partner.
- Open and support the door from below;
- slightly raise, direct the canvas up;
- turn it slightly until the upper half of the hinge is removed from the screw.
That's all. As you can see, the dismantling process does not require much work.
Dismantling the door on screw-in hinges
It is more difficult to master this algorithm:
- close the door;
- using a screwdriver, find a thin pin located in the hinge axis;
- raise it, grab it from above with pliers;
- pull out the pin, turning it slightly as you move.
- remove the canvas.
- Dismantling the door on hidden hinges
This technology is more complex. There are two options for removing the canvas: "in the open" and "in the closed".
To dismantle the canvas "in the open", you need:
- open the door;
- determine the type of connection of the loop components;
- choose a tool suitable for the job (screwdriver or wrench);
- disassemble the mount, remove the canvas.
To dismantle the canvas "closed", you need:
- close the door;
- remove the protective caps from the hinges;
- knock out the connecting axis;
- remove the canvas.
Knowing the procedure for performing different types of dismantling, you can easily remove a variety of doors from the hinges: entrance and interior, wooden and metal, sliding, as well as a plastic balcony door with double-glazed windows.
Removing the trim
As a rule, entrance models are usually sheathed. This is done in order to improve the thermal and sound insulating qualities, as well as to improve the overall aesthetic properties.
Replacing the old inner lining is as follows:
- take the dismantled canvas, put it horizontally;
- remove all accessories;
- remove the nails holding the decorative tape in the center with a pry bar (if any);
- remove the wood, oilcloth or leather sheathing by pulling out nails from the entire perimeter of the working surface with a crowbar.
If a sheet of plywood or lining is attached to a metal door with glue or liquid nails, then it is also removed with a pry bar. It is highly likely that as a result of disassembly, traces of fixing liquid and remnants of the removed panel will remain on the iron liner, therefore, to make the work look neater, it is better to use the dismantled material for re-plating.
DIY installation
After you have disassembled the frame, removed the structure from the hinges and made the necessary transformations, the question arises of re-assembly.
To successfully complete the work, it is necessary to strictly follow the technological order described below:
- inspect the doorway for cracks, gaps and other irregularities;
- if necessary, level the slopes with construction compositions;
- make marks in those places where hinges, handles and locks will be;
- cut special holes in the canvas, install locks;
- screw on handles and hinges;
- start collecting the box;
- adjust the length of the vertical frame slats to the required size, cut them;
- attach a horizontal bar to the side parts of the frame, fix it with self-tapping screws;
- if the width of the door is less than the width of the doorway, then with the help of dowels and self-tapping screws, add-ons should be installed - flat wooden strips with a width of 8-12 mm;
- insert the assembled box into the opening, temporarily fixing it with wedges to check the correct installation of the frame, align it;
- attach the box with a screwdriver, fasten the hinges in the pre-marked places;
- hang a door;
- cover the baseboards with masking tape;
- fill the gap between the opening and the box with polyurethane foam in 2-3 approaches;
- prepare the platbands, trimming, adjusting them to the dimensions taken at the beginning;
- fix the platbands around the perimeter, nailing them with small nails, placing them at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other.
Advice
Below are the recommendations given by professionals. They will help you in your work.
- It is recommended to dismantle not only during repair work, but also when transporting bulky items, pieces of furniture and household appliances: for example, when transporting a large refrigerator. This measure will help to avoid deformation of the door frame, as well as the appearance of scratches on the canvas.
- It is more convenient and safer to start dismantling work from the lower hinge. So, you can be sure that the removable structure will not accidentally fall on you. However, it is still not worth neglecting the help of a partner for insurance.
- It is more convenient to start removing the platbands from the bottom, carefully introducing the scrap under the skirting board.
- One of the most frequently asked questions by ordinary people is the following: is the dismantling of the balcony door a redevelopment? Definitely, yes, because after such a dismantling, it becomes possible to combine the room and the loggia, and the total area of the room increases.
- When removing wood or paneling with a crowbar, it is recommended to place a wide board under the nailer. This will minimize the risk of damage to the skin.
- Anyone who has purchased an iron or steel copy will certainly think about how to remove the film from a metal door. Do not try to tear off the glued polyethylene - this will only damage the coating. Use a building hairdryer or hot water. Under the influence of hot steam, the film will easily come off by itself.
- Trying on the box to the opening, it is better to fix it with wedges made of the same wood from which the frame is made.
- For quick and easy installation, purchase pre-boxed models.
Now you know how to dismantle, disassemble and reinstall any door. It is worth remembering that not everyone is friends with a construction tool and has at least the basic skills of a carpenter.
Those who are not confident in their own abilities are strongly advised to turn to professionals, entrusting the necessary work to specialized companies.
What is included in the set of works?
Below is a short list of dismantling works, on the basis of which the estimate is made, the final cost of the services of professional craftsmen is calculated:
- the doorway is measured;
- platbands are removed;
- the canvas is removed;
- the box is dismantled;
- the condition of the slopes is assessed;
- the opening is leveled, adjusted;
- a new canvas is installed;
- canopies and awnings are mounted at the request of the client.
If necessary, specialists can install a decorative overlay, expand the opening, dismantle the wall, redevelop rooms and carry out any other work.
