Overhead door hinges: how to choose and install?
When installing the door structure, the decisive role is assigned to the fittings. First of all, the door must be hung in the opening, and the door hinges must ensure the reliability of fastening and the smooth movement of the door leaf. All other properties that characterize the high-quality operation of the door (tightness of the closure, the uniformity of its location in the door frame, etc.) depend on the installer and the manufacturer of the door leaf.
Hinge selection
Overhead door butterfly hinges without a tie-in, which were previously considered by masters to be less reliable and suitable only for light indoor canvases, are now made using other technologies and from other materials. This allows them to be widely used not only for interior doors, but also for more critical structures.
To make the right choice and purchase a quality kit, you need to first familiarize yourself with some of the recommendations of specialists.
Materials (edit)
For interior doors, due to their low weight, brass retaining devices or fittings made of alloy with brass are sufficient.
A massive canvas will only withstand steel. Steel hinges should be chosen.
High-quality overhead hinges can serve you flawlessly for a long time. They are not afraid of deformation, they can easily withstand canvases with a large weight, which are just used for entrance doors. Modern butterfly-type hinges contain ball bearings in their mechanism, which ensure noiselessness and smooth operation of the device, and are also treated with a special protective coating with a galvanic method.
Colour
Today manufacturers offer hinges for doors in bronze, silver, gold, copper and even artificially aged, vintage - for semi-antique doors. Hinges are selected in accordance with the lock and door handle. In principle, the choice of all these attributes depends on the configuration of the door, on what shade the veneer is on it or what the texture of the door leaf is.
Most often, door fittings are already assembled in one set through the efforts of the manufacturer.
Quantity and dimensions
For home doors, installation options from two to five metal "butterflies" are suitable. Lightweight designs will be sufficient two. With an increase in the height and weight of the canvas, the required number of loops changes. For example, for a powerful 2-meter-high door with a weight of 80 kg, five support strips are required.
Determination of the dimensions of the overhead hinges also depends on the weight of the door. For lightweight canvases, 7 cm long parts are enough, and heavy sashes will only withstand those 10–12 cm in size. Before buying in a store or on the website, it is recommended to consult what parameters of the loops are needed in your particular case.
Otherwise, the choice of overhead mounts does not require compliance with any parameters. You can only advise the purchase of more advanced models equipped with options. For example, overhead mechanisms with a door closer, contributing to the smooth opening of the door and extending the life of not only the door leaf, but also the entire door structure.
Do not think that the most expensive fittings are of the highest quality. Among the loops of the middle price category, there are very worthy and practical options.
Preparation
You need to prepare for the installation of overhead parts. Prepare the required minimum of tools and free up your workspace. To install the hinges on the sash and door frame, you need the following inventory:
- level;
- long ruler;
- simple slate pencil;
- screwdriver or screwdriver;
- screws;
- wedges are wooden.
Based on the list presented, the set is quite modest and affordable. You will not be required to produce unnecessary costs, complex manipulations and a high level of professionalism.
Installation
Mark the door leaf. For proper performance of the functions of door hinges, they must be correctly positioned on the door leaf and on the frame. The instructions below will help to cope with the task.
- The upper overlay - "butterfly" must be placed on the end face so that a distance of 250 mm is observed between the upper edge of the door and the upper border of the hinge. The attached loop should be outlined with a pencil and set aside.
- Do the same with respect to the bottom loop, counting the same distance from the bottom edge of the fabric to the bottom of the loop. Trace the outline of the overlay, then move it to the side.
- If you plan to install an additional third loop on the canvas, it must also be placed strictly at the center point between the extreme loops. It is necessary to place each subsequent additional loop exactly in the middle between adjacent pads to evenly distribute the load.
Such a universal arrangement is a suitable option for lightweight interior doors and for heavy doors at the entrance to the house.
Now mark the door frame. This is a more complicated process, but quite doable. The main thing is to follow the correct chain of actions.
- You will need prepared wooden wedges. Place the canvas in the box and secure it. Now you need a building level to check the position of the door. It should be located strictly vertically, without the slightest deviation to the side.
- Using a pencil, mark the center of each loop on the box. It is important that they all coincide in level with the marks on the end of the door.
- Remove the door carefully.
After marking the door leaf and its frame, it is necessary to check again the accuracy of the measured distance between the edges and the boundaries of the hinges, and how accurately the indents are observed according to the above value. The slightest deviation can lead to quick wear of any of the overhead parts and its failure.
Installation of hinges
It doesn't matter which model you have in your hands - an invoice on hinges or a universal one-piece. They do not differ at all in the principle of installation. Even a novice master, who previously did not have the skills to install door hinges without a tie-in, can cope with the process of fastening the hinges.
- Attach a loop to the markings to make sure it is in the correct position. Then make grooves for the screws right through the holes in the part.
- Fasten the hinge with the screws using a screwdriver, slowly tightening them to avoid the hinge skewing.
- Then repeat steps 1 and 2 for each hinge that was marked on the door leaf and sash.
After installing all the prepared parts, you need to fix the sash in the door opening using the prepared wedges, check with the level the correct position. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each of the prepared hinges, applying the fittings to the markings on the box and securing them with screws.
Now we can consider the installation of overhead door fasteners successfully completed. It remains to make sure once again whether all the fittings are correctly fixed, to check that there are no gaps between the sash and the hinges.
Even a seemingly insignificant deviation will make all the efforts in vain. Incorrectly installed hinges will soon begin to creak, and the door will let through drafts.
How to care
Like any other model of fasteners, overhead hinges need to be regularly and correctly serviced.To do this, it is enough to lubricate them once a year with machine, mineral or synthetic oil, timely tighten the screws coming out of the nests. Then the fittings will serve for a long time, and the doors will work smoothly during operation.
Handling door hinge maintenance is easy. To do this, you do not need to call a master, but simply do what is necessary to lubricate the door opening mechanism. Removing the doors is also optional. Therefore, the whole process will take little time and will prolong the quality of the fittings for a long time.
If a ready-made lubricant is not available and there is no opportunity to purchase it in the near future, improvised means will do: Vaseline, special oil for sewing machine parts, testing (for car owners).
Even a simple slate pencil can come in handy for emergency handling of squeaky parts. But this is an extreme measure it is better to worry in advance about buying lithol or WD spray for lubricating hinges. Preventive measures will prevent premature wear of the hardware. This means that the doors will serve you for a long time and will reliably protect the house from drafts, uninvited guests and prying eyes.
