Choosing and installing hinges for plastic doors
Such an element of fittings as a hinge for a metal-plastic door is made of alloys of various metals. The main task of this part is to open and, accordingly, close the door block by connecting the door and the frame. Such products usually consist of several parts: casement part, spacer sleeve, frame, fasteners.

There are several types of hinges for plastic doors, they all differ in a certain number of characteristics.
If you touch on the issue of the width of the sash, then here you can note the details intended for a wide (up to 90 mm), as well as for a narrow profile.
In terms of the overlap width, the products can be with backings or those designed for use with a wide overlap.
If, for example, we consider models for withstand loads, then for narrow profiles, hinges are used that can withstand up to 80 kg, and for wide ones, products that can withstand no more than 160 kg will be applicable.
Speaking about the installation of door hinges, it is worth noting that each manufacturer of parts for PVC profiles uses its own method for fastening. In this regard, a specialized template is used to mount such fittings on a plastic door, designed to facilitate the installation process.
The hinge body can be made of aluminum or zinc alloy. In the manufacture of pins and inserts, stainless steel or an alloy of ferrous metals is used. Spacer sleeves are most often made of super strong plastic or equally strong Teflon. Fasteners in most cases are made of galvanized metal or stainless steel.
Hinges for metal-plastic doors have several types of regulation: horizontal, height, force with which they are pressed.
How to choose?
When choosing hinges, you need to pay attention to such details as the material from which the part is made, the overall quality of the part, the part manufacturer.
If you have chosen hinges from a brand manufacturer, then you can be sure that such fittings will serve you for more than one year. As a rule, both the upper and lower hinges are designed for an average of 200 thousand openings and the same number of closings.
If you have chosen a budget version of hinges for metal-plastic doors, then here you are already as lucky, but in most cases they are also enough for a long period of use.
For entrance doors that are subject to frequent opening and closing, reinforced aluminum alloy hinges should be selected. The durable material greatly increases the reliability of the fastening.
For balcony doors, it is necessary to select hinges, the assembly feature of which assumes the possibility of regulation. This feature will allow for vertical or horizontal adjustment of the structure.
How to install?
Let us dwell in more detail on the replacement process and the direct installation of the hinge on the plastic door. Such a measure is due to the fact that at the moment you can often face the acquisition of a part from an unscrupulous manufacturer, and therefore, one should not exclude the possibility of breakdown.
To replace the loop, first of all, you should deal with the tools, in most cases it will be represented by tools such as:
- thin pliers;
- punch;
- hammer;
- screwdriver.
Next, you need to dismantle the door. To successfully complete this manipulation, you should adhere to the following sequence:
- first, decorative parts should be removed from the structure;
- then we partially knock out the axis, pull it out with pliers;
- after that, you should tilt the door towards you, and remove it from the lower hinge;
- as soon as you have done all this, you can proceed to removing the damaged part, and fastening a new one.
Consider the process of installing new hinges on a metal-plastic door, taking into account all the subtleties and nuances. Be prepared that this procedure will also require you to follow certain instructions and comply with the specified norms.
With gentle hammer blows, the axis of the upper hinge should be sunk. If its upper part appears, it means that you did everything right. As soon as this stage is passed, it is necessary to pull the visible part of the axis down, grabbing it with pliers.
In cases where the door is installed using three hinges, similar actions should be carried out with the middle part. The bottom loop is usually firmly fixed, so there is no need to knock it out.
If the door leaf is deflected towards itself, it will need to be raised by about 6 cm, this will lead to the structure jumping out of the cylinder. Please note that balcony doors usually have a decent weight, so it is recommended that this manipulation be carried out with an assistant.
Once you've removed the broken loop, it's time to move on to installing a new one. It should be remembered that the new part should be as similar as possible to the old one. This will help avoid unnecessary work associated with drilling holes for fasteners.
Adjustment
After the installation of the hinge, it is imperative to adjust it. It is necessary to adjust the hinges in order to get rid of the possible appearance of gaps.
In order to carry out the manipulations correctly, a special screw is provided in the design of the part. The screws are hidden behind a dust strip. This bar can be easily removed, and subsequently it is necessary to either tighten or loosen the screw.
Operating tips
For the hinges to last longer, they must be lubricated. For this, you can use WD-40 or other similar grease lubricants. Machine oil or refined oil, hot wax, will work very well. This procedure should be carried out periodically, which will increase the reliability of the part. Lubricating the hinges involves the following steps:
- open the door as much as possible;
- put a small bar or several rolled newspapers below so that the structure rises;
- remove the pin from the loop or move it;
- take the product into a small syringe and lower it into the hole where the pin was;
- put the pin in place, remove the bar from the bottom;
- close and open the door several times so that the grease soaks the entire hinge.
