The accordion door, despite the fact that it is already quite familiar to the Russian buyer, is not often found in interiors. Unlike swing ones, such designs are distinguished by a large number of configurations. The screen door has a number of features that you definitely need to know about before buying.

The modern market presents accordion doors in many types. In particular, these interior designs are represented by two main configurations: single-leaf and double-leaf models. Single-leaf folding solutions are more suitable for rooms that have a small doorway. They are used when it is not possible to install swing or sliding doors. Both options require free space to open them: swing ones - in front of the door itself, sliding ones - along the wall.

Double-leaf accordion doors will perfectly fit into rooms with wide openings, for example, a hall or living room. Such a screen door can also play the role of a partition, separating one functional area of ​​the room from another. This is facilitated by the opening mechanism of such a product.

Two-leaf models open from the center to the sides, while single-leaf wide panels can be folded either one side or two at the same time. This requires a slight complication of the design: installation of guides with rollers both above and below in order to fix the door as much as possible and avoid bending and damage to the lamellas.

According to the external design, the doors are divided into deaf and glazed. So, blank canvases are designed to protect the comfort of residents and preserve the intimacy of the room in which they are installed. Deaf constructs are usually mounted in bedrooms, bathrooms, and lavatories. Glazed ones are more suitable for common rooms such as a kitchen or living room. Frosted or transparent glass, stained glass options, as well as mirror canvases are used as inserts. The latter option is especially good in insufficiently lit rooms, since mirrors are capable of simultaneously increasing the area of ​​the room and reflecting light, thereby increasing the intensity of the overall light flux.

According to the types of lamellas, doors are paneled, panel-type (for fixing the panels, a frame on a plastic basis is used to lighten the weight of the structure), as well as on a plastic or aluminum profile. Each of these types is good in its own way, the varieties differ only in price and the possibility of installation in different rooms. So, a plastic accordion door is good for bathrooms, since plastic is not susceptible to the negative effects of a humid environment.

In fact, the accordion is not very suitable for the role of a balcony door, since its heat and sound insulating properties leave much to be desired. A folding door of this type is only suitable as a balcony door for glazed and heated loggias, otherwise in winter it will be impossible to be in the living room, which is separated from the balcony, because of the terrible cold.

The range of materials from which accordion doors are made is extremely large, therefore they are conventionally subdivided according to the material used.

• Wooden. Solid wood accordion doors look solid and expensive, but they are not suitable for use in all rooms. Wood is extremely capricious, so you will need to observe a constant moisture and heat regime. Solid wood accordions are most often made of oak, since it is this material that is most durable. An alternative to the array is MDF or fiberboard, which can also be given the appearance of natural wood, if desired, for this, lamination is used. Also, wooden bases are often complemented by decorative inserts: fabric, glass, eco-leather, metal.
• Plastic. Plastic doors are the least reliable among all of the above, but they are also the cheapest. Also from PVC are made elements of fittings - rollers on which the door moves along the guides.

• Iron. Aluminum or steel construction is not uncommon, but they are usually supplemented with inserts of lighter materials, since the metal is quite heavy, and the entire structure may not withstand.
• Glass. A relatively new type, which also found its admirers. Glass doors can often be seen as separating the interior of the house and the terrace, since they do not obstruct the view and contribute to good illumination of the house.

Folding doors are quite simple in design. The system is as follows: on one side, the canvas is attached to the wall, guides are located above or below. Thus, it moves along them, folding and unfolding like an accordion.

Folding doors can be made in various colors. The color mainly depends on the material from which they are made. So, wooden structures are most often presented in brown tones and repeat natural wood shades: bleached oak, mahogany, light walnut, wenge and the like.

Plastic can be made in any colors, ranging from white and ending with imitations for other materials or patterns. Popular canvases on which imitation of other materials (wood, leather) or models with photo printing is applied.

The fashion for the color of glass doors varies depending on where they are located. In a spacious house, transparent options are usually mounted with wide slats to let in as much light as possible. In the apartments, options made of frosted glass, as well as with stained glass inserts, have taken root. Often, to decorate glass filling, the airbrushing method is used, when a drawing is applied to them with a special airbrush. A cheaper option is to use acrylic paints.

Metal doors are usually left untreated, decorating inserts. Sometimes they are covered with matting compounds in order to slightly reduce the glossy shine and give the whole structure an originality.

Also popular are the classic monochromatic coatings: white and black. In rooms where brightness is important, doors are used in saturated colors: emerald, bright yellow, purple. Transparent doors work well as zoning partitions.

One of the main advantages of accordion doors is their compact size. So, lamellas can start from 10 cm wide. The length of the canvas can also vary, which makes it possible to equip almost any opening with an "accordion".

Narrow lamellas are well suited for "Khrushchev" or for partitions that divide the space of the room in two. Wide options are good in relatively spacious spaces.Such lamellas can be compared in terms of their space with classic swing doors: their width is 60 cm and more.

Another feature is interchangeability. So, for a wide opening, both double sashes and a wide single sash can be used (less often, but still occurs). One wide door is also good as a dividing wall. Please note that accordion doors can also be mounted on non-standard openings, such as radial. Also, this option is good for slightly skewed openings (for example, as a temporary door before a future renovation), the only limitation is that the guide should then only be located at the top.

Thus, each owner of an apartment or house will be able to choose an accordion door of a suitable dimension or configuration, depending on his needs and wishes. When choosing the size of the door, you should pay close attention to its weight: the larger the door leaf, the lighter the lamellas should be. Otherwise, the entire structure will undergo rapid damage due to the large number of parts responsible for the operation of the doors.

For different rooms, accordion doors are selected in different ways. This is mainly due to the microclimate of the room, since not every material is suitable, for example, in the bathroom or toilet with their high humidity or for the kitchen due to the low protection against odors.

The doors to the bathroom are best chosen from plastic, since it is PVC that does not swell from wet steam. Glass structures with rubberized seams between the lamellas are also suitable. Both the first and second options are resistant to high humidity, but in the second case, you should pay attention to the presence of a special antiseptic impregnation. Mold can grow on the rubber seams, and to prevent this, they are just covered with an antiseptic.

Folding kitchen doors are rare due to the fact that they do not have sufficient insulation characteristics. No one wants to let kitchen smells reach the bedroom or living room. They are more common in studio apartments. In this case, they act as a decorative partition, conventionally separating the kitchen area from the living area.

Accordions are also rarely chosen on the balcony because of their low thermal insulation properties. You can install a folding model to isolate the glazed loggia, but not on an open balcony. The realities of the Russian climate are such that in winter it will be very cold in the house with such a door.

They like to install accordions in utility rooms: pantries, dressing rooms, laundries. They do not take up much space, and if desired, it is possible to choose a color that would completely merge with the walls, thus making the utility room as invisible as possible.

Accordion doors differ in a number of advantages that distinguish them favorably from all other varieties.

• Saving space. Accordion structures take up little space. If narrow slats are selected, then the entire width that will be needed for their installation is equal to the width of the doorway. For small apartments, this is a real salvation, since you need to save the usable area as much as possible.
• Do not slam in a draft. This characteristic is due to the fact that the door design is closer to the sliding door than to the swing door. Thus, the service life of the door is increased.
• Virtually silent. A high-quality fastening system and a system of rollers is able to nullify all the sounds produced when opening and closing the door.

• Big choice. Despite the seemingly monotony of accordion doors, there is a wide assortment: deaf models, glazed, with decorative inserts, carved and so on. It is not difficult to find the right model that matches the atmosphere of the interior.
• Ease. It's about the weight of the structures. They are lightened as much as possible in order to avoid problems with the operation of the hinge mechanism.This is especially important if there are small children at home who are inadvertently able to pinch their fingers with an ordinary swing model. With accordions, this probability is virtually zero.
• Variability in use. If swing doors can only be used as doors and nothing else, then accordions will also serve as partitions.

Despite the many advantages, folding doors have disadvantages, but there are much fewer of them than advantages:

• Due to the large number of parts in the mechanism, doors can quickly fail.
• It is almost impossible to find warm interior folding structures with good sound insulation, since the system itself implies a large number of slots and gaps. All this leads to the fact that the doors do not provide the proper level of insulation.

There are many options for how you can decorate an accordion door. The simplest and most affordable of all is the use of beautiful coatings, for example, with imitation of wood, leather, stone. Such films do not require special care, and you can decorate the door with them yourself when the existing design becomes boring.

Another nice option is to use transparent inserts. Panels with glass are also called French. They look like ordinary window frames with inserted glazing, only high, and have the shape of a folding sash. Most often, wide slats are chosen for these purposes, since they look the most advantageous in such a design.

Small frosted glass inserts can also be used. They are more appropriate on narrow slats. Such solutions can even be installed in the bathroom, but in this case it is better to choose not full-fledged glass, but its plastic imitation. Partially glazed wooden structures are good for living rooms, halls, bedrooms, since they do not look too bulky and even visually make the atmosphere more airy.

Metallic coating or iron inserts are not suitable for all styles. So, they look best in modern directions: modern, hi-tech, loft. The color of the inserts can also be varied as you wish, preferring bronze, shades of blackened silver, golden.
