How to choose oven furniture?
Today, the choice of many consumers no longer falls on combined ovens, but separately on a built-in oven and the same hob. Both individual pieces of equipment cannot function on their own - it is assumed that they will be built into a kind of cabinet or box, which will allow connecting all kitchen furniture and help maintain a single style of room decoration. You can pick up a cabinet for an oven in a store, order it for hired craftsmen, or even do it yourself, but first you need to figure out how to do it.
Module types
Technically, the easiest way to get the perfect oven case is to call specialists who know how the dimensions of furniture depend on the dimensions of the oven itself, understand all the subtleties, and, in general, assemble the case around the existing unit. In the other two cases, the task becomes somewhat more complicated - it should be clearly understood what we are looking for or will collect.
Quite often, the hob and oven, even purchased separately, are still sewn up with the help of furniture, as it were, into a single floor frame. The result resembles a classic one-piece stove with the difference that a pull-out shelf can also be built into the structure, which will be located on the basement level, raising the oven, or between it and the hob. The advantages of this approach are significant savings in kitchen space and relying on owners of almost any size. However, there are also disadvantages: it is not always convenient to get to a low-lying oven, and there is even a risk that the hostess will not like baking simply because it is inconvenient for her to do it.
One of the main advantages of an independent oven is that it can be used completely separate from the hob.
In such conditions, you can make sure that access to it is extremely convenient - for this, the technique can be placed in a separate pencil case, which will be raised approximately to chest level. The simplest solution would be to install the structure on a stand with drawers, although then access to them will be more difficult. Or you can even hang the pencil case on the wall, after securing it securely.
It should be borne in mind that when buying a cabinet, even if it fits in size, but is not specially made for storing the oven in it, you will have to calculate further modification of the furniture. Regardless of the type of power supply, the oven will require access to communications - an electrical outlet or a gas pipe, and the holes for such must be strictly in the right place. From all of the above, we can conclude that the independent (or by the hands of craftsmen to order) the manufacture of the structure will be a much more practical solution.
Calculation of dimensions
Choosing a bedside table or going to design it yourself, you should start from the dimensions of the oven itself. For this reason, it is preferable to first decide on the technique, and only then proceed to the choice of furniture, since the craftsmen will assemble you a cabinet according to the size of the oven, but they are unlikely to do the reverse operation.
Interestingly, the concept of the standard dimensions of a built-in oven may differ depending on the country. For example, in the West, the typical width of such equipment is considered to be 90-120 cm, but for the domestic market with our tiny kitchens, ovens are usually supplied no wider than 60 cm, but there are also very tiny ones - up to 45 cm.
Height is usually not standardized in any way.Just in case, it is made approximately such that the hob above the oven is approximately at the level of the lower part of the hand, so the average height can be called about 85 cm.
The depth of most models also allows some variation, usually between 50 and 55 cm.
If suddenly you already have a bedside table, and it remains to find only a good oven for it, do not bother especially with the search for perfect compatibility. In fact, the new technique does not have to fit exactly the size of the pencil case - the main thing is that it fits normally in it and, if possible, does not dangle in it too much. In theory, you could opt for an even much smaller oven. It should be remembered that its maximum permissible dimensions are measured not along the outer sides of the box, but along the inner sides, after which, just in case, at least a couple of centimeters should be subtracted from each of the indicators. Responsibly, you should approach the measurement of the device itself - make sure that at least on the sides, above and below it does not have protruding parts that you did not take into account when taking measurements.
Self-production
If the owner of the kitchen is used to working with his hands and has certain skills in woodworking, it will not be more difficult for him to assemble a pencil case for an oven of any type than an ordinary table. Such a decision will hit the family budget less, on average it takes about three hours to assemble a cabinet from scratch.
Materials and tools
In order not to be distracted in the process, before starting work, you should stock up on everything you need. As the main material used for the walls, you can use ordinary plywood 18 mm thick, but for the countertop (especially if you do not plan to embed the hob into it), as well as for the bottom, you should choose wood materials not thinner than 30 mm. If you are not yet thinking about the intricacies of kitchen design as an integral room, of all colors of materials, give preference to walnut - such consumables are the easiest to find, while they are normally perceived by eye and fit well into most neutral interiors.
If the design also assumes the presence of a drawer, be sure to purchase a set of guides for it.
To prevent the box from standing directly on the floor, you can purchase plastic furniture supports. Complete all of the above with good self-tapping screws - and the set of materials is ready. As for the necessary tools, they are usually found by default in any house where a man who knows how to work with wood lives. Technically, the most difficult unit is a screwdriver, all other tools are extremely simple: a saw for cutting wood, a tape measure or ruler for measurements and a pencil for marking.
Drawing
A common mistake when making your own furniture is the belief that the assembled structure is too simple to even make a drawing for it. In fact, you simply have to sketch out an approximate diagram of the finished box, and be sure to indicate all the sizes of the individual parts. If the design turns out to be rather complicated, and it is impossible to evaluate all its details from one angle, do not be lazy to draw one or more drawings that will show the future furniture from a different angle.
If you do not assemble furniture professionally and on a daily basis, it is better not to rush to create a drawing and its implementation. Experienced people advise beginners to draw a drawing long before the assembly and cutting of parts, so that then, with a fresh mind, once again evaluate how correctly it was drawn up. When checking the diagram, be sure to check the correspondence of all parameters so that the structure has the correct rectangular shape.
Please note that even the places of future fasteners should be marked on the drawing.
When calculating the exact dimensions, do not forget that you are starting from the dimensions of the oven. Measure it taking into account all the protruding parts and add at least 1 cm to each parameter - this margin ensures that the equipment will fit into the furniture. The resulting dimensions are internal; to calculate the external, you must also take into account the thickness of the adjacent walls. So, if the width of the oven is 560 mm, then the inner width of the drawer must be at least 570 mm. In this case, the table top will lie on the side walls, and if each of them is 18 mm thick, then the total width of the table top will be at least 606 mm - and then provided that it fits perfectly and should not protrude.
Another important detail is ventilation. No matter how good the thermal insulation of the oven is, do not forget that in working order it can heat up to more than 200 degrees, and in the self-cleaning mode, some models are heated up to 500 degrees. So that the equipment does not heat up so much and does not create danger for the headset and other surrounding furniture, the box should not be made tightly wrapping around it from all sides. Leaving a larger gap between the wall of the oven and the wall of the cabinet will not spoil the kitchen design, but it will extend the life of the oven. The back wall of such a cabinet is often not made, in general, if there is one, you can make the furniture deeper, but not reach the bottom to the back wall so that there is an opening for air access.
Ideally, a drawing should be drawn up after you have studied the instructions for the purchased oven.
It may contain specific information about how far other objects should be removed from the working device, and this will help to correctly calculate all the dimensions.
Assembly
When the drawing with the dimensions of all the parts is ready and checked several times, you can proceed to cutting the plywood into pieces of the desired size. Having received the necessary set of parts for the future box, be sure to apply markings on each of them, which will show the location of the potential installation of fasteners. This is how they mark not only the places where the screws are screwed in, but also the fastening areas of the guides for the boxes. When the markup is ready, "try" the parts to each other and make sure that all calculations were correct and all nodes fit.
After that, homemade plywood parts are equipped with purchased ones: guides are screwed to the walls of the frame near the location of the future box with self-tapping screws, and the legs are attached to the bottom, counting an average of 5 cm from the edges to the center. After that, the bottom is placed with an edge, in this position it is easiest to attach the sidewalls to it. The side walls are screwed on with self-tapping screws as tightly as possible, the fasteners must be flush-mounted - so you will not hurt yourself about it in the future.
Make sure that all corners are 90 degrees, after which the cover can be screwed on.
If it was a pencil case separately for an independent oven, it remains to assemble the drawer (if such was provided for by the drawing) and place it and the oven itself in their rightful places - this is where the furniture is ready. If, however, it was also necessary to mount a hob into this frame, we have yet another stage of work, for which additional tools will be needed - a drill and a jigsaw.
Measure the outer length and width of the hob, as with the oven, add a few millimeters to the dimensions on each side. Determine the center of the box lid, measure from it so that the future hole is at an even distance from all edges. Do not rush to cut the lid - first, draw the contours of the future hole with a pencil and once again make sure that they fit quite well on the surface of the countertop.
Use a drill to drill a hole in the wood to run the jigsaw saw through the tabletop for further cutting. Keep in mind that the entire diameter of the future hole must be inside the outlined contour, otherwise you will have to increase its dimensions in order to get the perfect square of the slot. After that, insert the nail file and carefully cut out the space for installing the hob along the drawn contour.
When the opening is ready, try inserting the hob into it.
If suddenly the opening turns out to be too small, expand it, but if the hob fits into it normally, you can additionally sand the edges with sandpaper - this will minimize the likelihood of injury when using kitchen appliances. Special fasteners are usually supplied with the hob, with which you should securely fix the device inside the slot. Check if the hob is firmly held by applying a certain force to it, and if the kitchen appliances are holding up and not wobbling, then the oven drawer made by yourself is ready.
