Having studied the recommendations of experienced specialists, you can update the chipboard furniture without spending more than 3-5% of the original cost of the product.
Common problems
Any furniture can break down for a variety of reasons, ranging from its natural wear and tear and ending with improper loads and the use of models in unfavorable temperature conditions, as well as in rooms with high humidity. Products can often become unusable with aging of the glue, as well as due to careless handling of the structure, when erasing moving parts.
The most common problems include:
- defects arising from the destruction of the upper varnish layer or film, these include the appearance of dents, scoring, veneer peeling;
- damage to products due to wear of springs, fittings, hinges and other components;
- the appearance of splits due to high humidity in the room, with mechanical stress on furniture;
- destruction or weakening of various elements due to damage to the surface by insects.
Restoration work is carried out to mask the chips that have appeared on the surface. Thanks to the restoration, scratches will be removed, torn hinges and fasteners will be repaired.
All these damages can appear both in combination and separately. The volume of the proposed work, its nature, depends on this. If carpentry repairs are to be done, then the master needs to change certain parts or strengthen the fasteners. For decorative repairs, you need to update the coating or upholstery.
Any repairs begin with an inspection of the case.
This work is recommended to be combined with lubrication and cleaning of the hinges, treatment of the case with polishing materials, antiseptics.
Tools and materials
When repairing chipboard products, you should take care of the necessary materials in advance. Having a small arsenal of necessary tools at hand, you can repair old or deformed chipboard furniture.
The master should prepare the most necessary things.
- Markers. In your work, it is better to use a special felt-tip pen for retouching. A regular felt-tip pen that matches the color of the surface to be treated is also suitable. For these purposes, any paint, shoe cream or iodine is also used.
- Wax. To repair scratches, chips or cracks that have appeared on the surface, it is advisable to use a soft wax, that is, a wax putty. It will provide moisture resistance for an already restored product.
- Hard wax for furniture they are used more often for surfaces with high performance properties, for example, for countertops, shelves or flooring.
- Wax melting device. The use of a hot melt putty, that is, a hard wax, involves melting it before use. This can be done with a gas torch, a soldering iron, or a regular lighter.
- The varnish that is used for fixing. In this case, it is better to choose a fixing varnish or polish in the form of a spray or aerosol.Use means to restore the original shine to products, to mask small scratches and abrasions.
- Self-adhesive. It is advisable to choose several types of self-adhesive and use them to decorate the surface of products and for glass.
- Do not do without during work office knife, sharp scissors, iron. You may also need a special edge if you need to replace the trim. In addition, the master cannot do without an epoxy 2-component composition, a spatula, a chisel, a piece of lint-free fabric, as well as PVA glue, chopiks and wooden corks.
How to repair?
Repair and restoration of furniture made of chipboard can be done at home on your own. Many do not know what to do if you need to close up a hole in the door or disguise a deformed headboard, fix the facade of the kitchen, or even the entire set.
Often in rooms with high humidity, for example, in the kitchen, scuffs begin to form on chipboard furniture. Constant wiping of surfaces with wet wipes also leads to their formation. If there is a wear on the furniture, it will not be difficult to fix such a defect. To eliminate it, you will need to find a piece of fabric, preferably made of microfiber, and a felt-tip pen that matches the color of the surface to be treated. A felt-tip pen is applied to the napkin and the worn places are treated with it. A microfiber cloth should be carried along the surface without disturbing the structure of the product. Following this treatment, a fixing agent is usually applied to the surface.
Sometimes it is enough to use a pigmented polish or a laminate cleaner. After processing with such means, it is necessary to polish with a lint-free cloth.
In case of improper handling of the products, for example, when the doors in the cabinet are suddenly opened and slammed, cracks may appear. They are also formed if the furniture is in a room with high humidity. Constant saturation with moisture, and then drying of products leads to deformation, cracks.
For the restoration of such a defect, PVA glue is suitable. It is better to draw it into a medical syringe. In the place where the crack appeared, glue is released, blotting the places with a napkin.
Experienced craftsmen recommend the use of a tightening retainer.
They should grab the crack. After a day, the retainer can be removed. Using such simple methods will allow you to quickly update furniture that has lost its original appearance. When doing the work, it is important to do everything in stages, while it is necessary to allow the glue to dry completely. This will make it possible to reliably fix the place of damage with a special means.
Chips and scratches
Often, during long-term operation of chipboard products, chips begin to form at their corners. To restore the corners, you should:
- take a chisel and process the corners with it;
- then you should take the melted wax and cover it with the place where the piece broke off;
- after drying, remove excess and, using a chisel, level the surface;
- the corners must be sanded with a piece of soft cloth;
- using a felt-tip pen, you need to apply retouching and wipe the drawing with a napkin to smooth out the shade;
- after carrying out all the manipulations, it remains to seal this place with wax, varnish.
Chips appearing at the end of a countertop or lid are far from rare. If the end of the furniture is pasted over with a special melamine edge, it will not be difficult to remove such a defect.
To fix it, you need to perform some actions.
- Purchase the required materials. In this case, the master will need a melamine edging with glue of the appropriate shade and thickness. Such products can be purchased from construction departments where fittings are sold.
- It is necessary to take an iron and warm up the end of the furniture with it, this will allow you to quickly remove the deformed edge.
- Using a chisel and sandpaper, grind the end face.
- An iron is also used to glue the new edge. After gluing, the excess is cut off with a sharp knife and sanded with sandpaper or a sponge.
- If necessary, pass along the edges with toning agents, a felt-tip pen.
In the case when the chips are already very deep, they should be masked.
For this you need:
- take a chisel and clean the area from dirt, then give the area the desired shape.
- choose a wax that is ideally suited to the color of the product (to get the desired shade, you can mix different crayons);
- in place with a chip, apply furniture wax and compact it;
- as soon as the wax dries, you need to cut off the excess wax with a spatula or clerical knife;
- take a piece of lint-free cloth and sand.
If it is necessary to restore the drawing, use a felt-tip pen, which is used to draw the desired relief with thin strokes. To consolidate the result obtained, a fixing varnish is used.
Holes for fasteners
Many are interested in the question of how to fix the cabinet doors made of chipboard if cracks and chips appear at the attachment point.
Many experienced craftsmen recommend using a wooden chopik with glue to solve this problem.
To work you need:
- remove the sash and, using a drill, drill the hole, it is important to drill the hole so that the drill does not come out on the other side;
- you need to pour glue like "Moment" into the hole and carefully hammer the chopik;
- after 15 minutes, you need to drill a hole in this insert and tighten the self-tapping screw.
Screwing in the self-tapping screw is usually carried out on the removed door. If the fasteners hold well, the door is hung on the cabinet.
Torn noose
Very often, with an excessive load on the cabinet door, the hinge or other fasteners are “pulled out” from the wall. Since there is no way to transfer the hinges to another place, you should restore the place with the defect, and then screw the hinges again.
To carry out such repair work, you need:
- drill a place for a connection with a diameter of 8 mm with a drill, drive in a chopik;
- screw a self-tapping screw and fasteners into the chopik, when screwing in the self-tapping screw, use a thin drill so that the chopik does not burst.
If the deformed place is not hidden by the fittings, it is filled with a special furniture wax of the desired shade and polished. You can fill the place with a mixture of PVA glue and chips or use a 2-component epoxy. After the product becomes solid, the fasteners are screwed in.
Other breakdowns
Table surfaces are generally considered the most vulnerable part of a kitchen set. The slab may swell after prolonged contact of the product with water or due to improper care.
If the tabletop or any chipboard product is swollen, but the canvas is not swollen, it is advisable to treat the joints and tables with silicone or sealant.
In the event that the surface is swollen, you need to perform a number of specific actions to restore the original shape.
For work, the master will need:
- sawdust or shavings;
- PVA glue;
- bars;
- edge;
- construction hair dryer;
- putty knife.
To restore a laminated worktop, you need to follow a specific procedure.
- Take a building hair dryer. Use it to heat the swelling of the web.
- Dry the surface, remove loose pieces.
- Glue is added to the resulting voids and left to dry for 15-20 minutes.
- A homogeneous mixture should be kneaded from PVA glue and shavings. Leave it to infuse for 10-15 minutes.
- Using a spatula, the resulting mixture is poured into the voids and tamped.
- On both sides of the canvas, you need to put bars and tighten them with a clamp.
- Remove excess adhesive.
- Leave the canvas for a day until completely dry.
- Warm up the edge and glue it on.
- Place the countertop in its original place.
All these manipulations will allow you to correct the defect and restore kitchen and other furniture from chipboard.

Choosing a gold, silver, or copper color can help add sophistication to your refurbished furniture. The addition in the form of craquelure will allow the furniture to look unusually spectacular.
It is better to use it for products made in vintage style, craquelure is also suitable for a classic interior.
The decor in the form of an applique made of self-adhesive or fabric will look very interesting on such products.
Napkins in different styles are often used to decorate products. Such products made in the style of "Provence", Victorian style look especially impressive. Such elements can ideally refresh the interior, make it lighter and more airy.
Various patterns and an interesting ornament can be used to decorate products. To apply a print, use special stencil templates.... The paint is applied carefully so as not to splatter the surface around the pattern.
Large, dull drawings will look more in the center or below. At the top, such a pattern will visually make the space heavier.
