The owners of summer cottages and private houses know that manual watering is a rather laborious task. Nowadays, there is an opportunity to significantly simplify and automate this process, for this you only need to buy a special sprinkler for irrigating the site. Such an installation maintains conditions that are comfortable for the growth and development of plants. Let's dwell on the characteristics of different types of sprinklers.

Features and purpose

On hot summer days, the need to install sprinklers in house plots and summer cottages increases. This is due to the fact that in hot weather, groundwater cannot saturate the earth with moisture in sufficient quantity. Sprinklers provide the grass with the necessary moisture and nutrients for the roots.

The principle of operation of any sprinkler system is to supply water from a source to an irrigated area. Moisture is supplied under pressure, which ensures optimal water flow parameters. In the simplest models, gravity flow from a tank, well, or general water supply is used. If this pressure is small, then a pump is introduced into the system.

Pipes are drawn throughout the field according to the scheme: one central and lateral branching from it. If the territory is large, then the central bar goes along the entire perimeter of the site, and additional ones go from it to the center. The open end of the central pipe is fixed with a source of moisture, a valve is placed between them. Thus, you can adjust the basic parameters of the water supply.

Can be used in a wide variety of landscapes, including slopes and uneven areas where manual irrigation is not possible.

The advantages of sprinklers are undeniable:

  • a wide selection of outlets and types of nozzles allows you to set the optimal water supply rate, taking into account the parameters of water absorption of moisture by the soil;

  • creation of a comfortable microclimate for plants, contributing to their growth and, accordingly, an increase in productivity;

  • uniformity of irrigation redistribution;

  • economical use of water resources;

  • the ability to set restrictions on the amount of watering;

  • the ability to deliver nutrient supplements to plants, dissolved in water;

  • pressure adjustment (for example, at the stage of seed germination, small volumes of water will be required, at the stage of fruit formation, the amount of moisture must be increased);

  • long term of use - most manufacturers set a warranty period for their products of 10 years or more.

However, there were some drawbacks:

  • high cost of equipment and installation;

  • the need for additional costs for conducting electrical energy in cases where automatic pressure is not enough for effective irrigation;

  • high water loss due to evaporation of moisture from the surface of the beds;

  • maintaining high humidity - as a result, susceptibility to fungal infections;

  • with excessive moistening with tap water, the risk of saline burns increases;

  • washing off fungicides and insecticides from the green parts of the plant.

In addition, the equipment is highly susceptible to fluid clogging, so the manufacturers recommend the use of filtered water. Untimely replacement of filters often leads to unit breakdown.

Sprinklers have a wide range of applications:

  • on fruit and vegetable plants that are resistant to non-infectious diseases that occur when water gets on the leaves (this setting is suitable for vegetables that require continuous irrigation);

  • to regulate the microclimate - drip irrigation is used to cool plants in hot weather and to protect them in case of a drop in temperature;

  • in gardens, the plants are used individually for each individual tree.

The high efficiency of the sprinklers has been proven for seedlings grown in greenhouses and greenhouses.

Sprinklers can be used on most types of soil. The main thing is that the irrigation rate is lower than the soil filtration parameters - this will prevent waterlogging of the soil. Sprinklers work best on sandy substrates, but this type of irrigation is not suitable for gray-brown desert and heavy loams prone to crust formation. If other irrigation methods are not available in such areas, then the smallest diffuser nozzles should be used.

Retractable sprinklers

Pull-out sprinklers are usually installed as part of automated irrigation. In this case, the supply is carried out through a stationary water supply. Above the ground, such a structure is almost invisible, since it is located just below the substrate level. This device moves to the surface only at the stage of water supply, and after completion of the work it again hides in the ground.

Rotary

Rotary units include a static base and a rotating head and are similar in appearance to fans. The main device carries out the movement and supply of fluid to the blades. At the moment when the water is under pressure, droplets are sprayed in a circle. This irrigation method is often used in the maintenance of stadiums.

Depending on the ability to adjust the tilt parameters, rotary sprinklers are adjustable and non-adjustable. Devices of the first type allow you to set up the irrigation site yourself. The latter irrigate the entire surrounding area in a circle.

Fan-shaped

Such models are better known as static ones. They allow you to irrigate the area within a radius of 5-6 m. Serrated models are widely demanded in areas with a difficult landscape, since the use of rotary installations in such cases does not give the desired result.

Non-retractable devices

These are circular rotary sprayers. When watering the garden, the stream in them describes a full circle of 360 degrees.

Pulse

This is a sector installation, respectively, water is supplied in small portions. The main advantage of such models is the irrigation range, which can reach 10-15 m. In this case, humidification is carried out evenly, since the range of droplets supply changes during the operation of the installation. The advantages of the model include its immunity to dirt and ease of maintenance.

Impulse sprinklers are in demand when irrigating tall crops - in this case, the main unit is placed on a tripod.

Oscillating

Pendulum installations are indispensable when it is necessary to irrigate a quadrangular area. The design of this sprayer is a boom with holes, some models allow its rotation around its axis. Depending on the specific parameters of the model, the irrigation radius varies within 6-20 m. The device can be installed on a tripod or in the ground.

Circular

Such models provide a range of damage within 3-10 m. This is a reliable device that performs uniform watering.

Sprinkler Hoses

One of the most budgetary models. The irrigation distance is 2.5 m. Most users note that these hand sprinklers are extremely easy to install and easy to use.

How to choose?

When choosing a watering device, you need to pay attention to a number of characteristics.

View

The pop-up sprinklers can be easily hidden in the lawn. They are connected to the automatic irrigation system, but at the same time they have a small radius of action from 3 to 7 m. Fixed models are more mobile, they are used only in dry periods. They provide irrigation over long distances.

type of instalation

Preference should be given to products with special platforms. They provide maximum structural stability. Peak sprinklers are a good solution for small areas.

Throw length

Everything here largely depends on the area of the site - the larger it is, the longer the jet should be. Models with smooth adjustment will become a universal solution.

Design features

There are many models on the market that allow you to transform a continuous stream of water into artificial rain. In impulse products, the liquid is supplied in portions to a nozzle rotating in a circle - in this case, the distance of the jet can be automatically changed, thereby achieving uniform moistening of the entire area. Such models are distinguished by unpretentiousness to the quality of the water used and a high irrigation range, they are optimal for irrigating round lawns.

For watering rectangular land plots, it is better to give preference to oscillating installations. Pivot sprinklers usually have a static platform and a moving head. A different number of nozzles can be attached to them. The advantages of such structures include reliability and uniformity of irrigation.

Mounting method

Installing a sprayer on a lawn is very different from installing a sprinkler on a garden bed. To organize the irrigation of the site as quickly as possible, platforms are used - they give stability to products on flat areas and on a slight slope.

There is not always enough space in the row spacing to install the sprinkler, so in the limited spaces of the garden, pointed legs or tripods will be a more effective solution. Usually the land in such areas is soft, so there are no problems with installing and removing the sprinkler.

For watering the lawn, the best solution will be models on wheels. These units can be moved by slightly pulling on the hose.

Additional equipment and design directly depend on personal preference. The same goes for materials of manufacture. However, experts recommend giving preference to sprinklers made of ABS plastic: this is a durable material that demonstrates exceptional resistance to adverse external influences (such as high humidity and temperature extremes).

We examined the main types of sprinkler installations, got acquainted with their advantages and disadvantages. We hope our tips will help you find an effective irrigation system for your garden.
