How much does a pine plank cube weigh?
Pine board is quite versatile and is used in construction and repair everywhere. The weight of lumber should be taken into account, because it affects the characteristics of transportation and storage. During construction, this criterion also plays a role, it allows you to calculate the load on the foundation. When sold, the board is measured in cubic meters, so the weight of this particular amount of material is usually calculated.
What affects weight?
The type of wood provides a certain density of the material. This indicator directly affects weight. Pine boards are quite dense and therefore heavy. There are other factors that matter as well.
- Humidity... Wood can absorb and retain water even from the air. Moisture will increase the weight of the board. It happens that the lumber has natural moisture or has been poorly dried, improperly stored. All of these factors will make it harder. Therefore, even boards of the same wood species may have different actual weights. Very damp boards are usually not used in construction. They shrink a lot and may even start to rot.
- Damage by parasites. There are pests that settle inside the tree and eat up passages in it. As a result, the material becomes looser, the density decreases, and with it the weight. This fact allows you to immediately abandon the purchase of low-quality pine boards. If the cube of the material is significantly lighter than it should be according to the standards, it means that parasites live inside.
- Internal defects... This factor is somewhat similar to the previous one. At the same time, defects can be natural or acquired as a result of improper processing of lumber. The result is deplorable: the density of wood fibers decreases. This makes the lumber lighter.
Thus, the weight of a pine board depends on its moisture content and quality.
The first factor is variable. Too wet lumber can be dried and used as intended... At the same time, a low quality board cannot be used in construction, a decrease in density affects not only weight. Such a board greatly loses its strength and reliability, which means that the construction from it is unlikely to last long.
How much does a cube of different boards weigh?
It is worth counting the weight per cubic meter of the board, because this is how it is considered when selling. The amount of water in a tree is measured as a percentage. Since the same pine lumber can have different weights depending on humidity, several groups are distinguished.
- Dry... Pine with a moisture content of 10-18% belongs to this category. The approximate weight of a cubic meter will be 505-510 kg.
- Air dry. A material with a moisture content of 19–23% can weigh about 520 kg.
- Raw... Wetter wood: 24–45%, 1 m3 will weigh about 550 kg.
- Wet... This category includes all material with a moisture content of more than 45%. A wet board weighs about 550-730 kg.
- Natural moisture... When harvesting wood, a freshly cut tree has exactly this characteristic. The humidity is over 90% and the weight can be about 820 kg.
Approximate characteristics make it clear how much the amount of water increases the weight of a cubic meter of pine boards.
When buying wood, you need to consider the exact moisture level. It is impossible to focus on approximate data, because the material may not be at all suitable for solving some construction problems.
The table shows the specific gravity of wood with different moisture levels. This calculation does not take into account any additional factors other than density and water.

You can see a direct relationship between the density of the pine board and the weight. Density varies proportionally with moisture content. The wetter the wood becomes denser because the fibers swell and increase in size. This factor should also be taken into account.
The board itself can be planed, edged and unedged. Each species has its own characteristics. An unedged board is formed after cutting a tree in one pass. The bark remains on the edges. Typically, an unedged board for construction has a moisture content in the 8-10% range.
Pine lumber is in great demand and is often used. The edged board is suitable for both construction and decoration. The material can be dry or wet. The moisture content of the latter is more than 22%. Such lumber is processed from all sides and has practically no wane.
The planed board is perfectly flat and has no bark residues. It is always dry, so it is relatively light in weight. The cutting features guarantee the strength of the board, its reliability and durability. Usually it is dried to the desired humidity level in special chambers or naturally in the air. A cubic meter of such a board weighs about 480-505 kg.
Calculation features
An accurate understanding of the weight of the lumber is necessary at the time of purchase. This will ensure the correct transportation and selection of the vehicle. And also knowing the weight will allow you to clearly calculate the load that will be on the supporting structure or foundation after construction. There is a certain formula that allows you to find out the exact characteristic.
It is worth noting that there will be a different number of boards in the cube depending on their size. Edged boards with dimensions 50X150X6000 mm 22 pcs. in 1 m3. However, quantity and size do not play a role in calculating weight. This information is only relevant when purchasing.
Bulk density (Yw) is measured in g / cm3. It depends on moisture and wood species. It is usually calculated at a normal humidity of 15%. The formula is used to determine Yw = Yo (100 + W) / (100+ (Yo-Yw)).
Decoding of values:
- Yw - volumetric shrinkage;
- Yo is the volumetric weight of completely dry wood with a moisture content of 0%;
- W is the moisture content of the board.
And also to calculate the mass, you can multiply the length, thickness, width and density among themselves. The last parameter depends on humidity and is selected according to the reference table. This method assumes obtaining approximate data. And also to calculate the weight, you can contact a specialist. If you buy lumber from a manufacturer, then he can usually help with the solution of the issue.
