Calibrated board
In modern construction and interior decoration, natural materials, especially wood, are becoming increasingly common. An environmentally friendly product is practical, durable, and has an aesthetic appearance. Of the existing abundance of timber lumber, a calibrated board is popular, which has a number of positive characteristics.
What it is?
Definitions for sawn timber are contained in GOST 18288-87. The board is sawn timber, in which the thickness is up to 100 mm, and the width exceeds the thickness by 2 or more times. According to GOST, the calibrated board must be dried and processed to the specified dimensions. This term is often referred to as dry planed board. This is usually a very high quality product.
To obtain a product, wood is dried in a special drying chamber. The process takes up to 7 days when exposed to the optimum temperature. With this drying, moisture is evenly removed from all layers of the material, which subsequently avoids warping, cracking and other defects. In addition, shrinkage is not required for such a board. Distinctive features of the material are practicality, durability and reliability.
High-precision equipment is used for processing. The board turns out to be smooth, with an even surface. The main characteristic of the calibrated material is that it practically has no deviations from the specified dimensions and corresponds to the standard (45x145 mm). For a regular board, the permissible deviation is 5-6 mm, and in the presence of knots and cracks, it can be large.
The permissible deviation for a calibrated board is 2-3 mm, taking into account the entire length of the product. Such precision of manufacturing is very convenient and practical for construction and decoration: the elements are carefully adjusted to each other, without requiring additional manipulations. Therefore, the work is happening faster, and the buildings are of higher quality, there are no cracks in them.
For the production of calibrated boards, coniferous wood is used.
Advantages and disadvantages
The material has many advantages.
- It can be used for various construction industries. It is suitable both for the construction of structures, floors, and for interior and exterior finishing works.
- No additional preparation required, the product is ready to use immediately after purchase.
- Exact fit of elements. The absence of gaps allows you to keep warm in the building.
- Resistance to moisture, fungus, putrefactive processes, temperature extremes.
- Ecological cleanliness, harmlessness to people, animals, the environment.
- High reliability, durability.
- No deformation.
- Suitable for use in different climatic zones.
The downside is that a calibrated board is 1.5-2 times more expensive than a non-planed board. However, when carrying out work using high-quality material, its rejection is minimized.

To better understand the benefits of a calibrated board, you should understand the types of lumber. Each of them has its own characteristics and advantageous areas of application.
- One of the most expensive and high quality materials is dry board. This is the name of the lumber processed in the drying chamber. Such a product does not deform or crack, fungus is not dangerous for it, rot and darkening appear only under the condition of gross violations of the rules of storage and operation. Structures are built from dry material, which should look attractive.
- Edged board is widely used. It can be either wet (moisture content more than 22%) or dry (moisture content less than 22%). It is called edged because the bark is cut from the edges. Scope - external and internal decoration, manufacture of partitions, floors, ceilings.
- A planed board is considered a universal material. All its sides are processed on specialized equipment, it has geometrically correct dimensions. It is often used as a finishing material and in the manufacture of furniture, as it has a good quality surface.
- Narrower application for beveled material, i.e. with beveled edges. The chamfer can be located both on both sides along the board, and along the entire perimeter. This cut is often done on floor coverings for technical and aesthetic purposes.
Where is it used?
Calibrated board is a widely used material in various industries.
- Construction. Suitable for frame house building. From it you can build a farm building, a bathhouse, a gazebo.
- Furniture industry. It is often used as a base for upholstered furniture.
- Finishing material. Can be used to decorate gazebos, verandas, interior and exterior of the house.
- Arrangement of fences.
