Varieties of beech boards and their application
The wood of this deciduous long-liver belongs to rare and valuable species. The article will consider the types of beech boards and their application. Despite the fact that their cost is quite high, the costs are fully justified by the long service life of products made of this durable and attractive material.
Peculiarities
Beech is a tree-like deciduous plant that is one of the most common forest species in Europe. Reaching the territory of Ukraine and the Crimean lands, it also extends to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, extending in range to the Gulf of Finland.
The beech tree has a smooth and high trunk, the height of which can reach 35-40 m. The handsome beech is a rare long-liver, its duration of active growth can be more than 400 years. Such a long process of life is explained by the fact that this tree tends to grow very slowly.
As a raw material for the manufacture of sawn timber, beech hardwood is harvested starting from the age of the tree at least 50 years.
Boards made from beech have high degree of strength, flexibility and long service life. However, dense wood does not tolerate moisture well. By their structure, the fibers of this deciduous rock have a high degree of hygroscopicity and literally absorb the maximum moisture from the atmospheric air. Moisture saturation leads to the fact that the wood material begins to deform and rot. Given this feature of the lumber in question, it is used only for interior finishing work.
In appearance, the saw cut of a beech tree has a white color with a reddish-yellow tint.
Under the influence of oxygen, the wood cut over time changes its color to a pink-brown hue. By its structure, wood is quite dense and heavy, and if such a material is subjected to a rapid drying process, then it begins to crack and deform. Well-dried beech lumber is prone to a fairly easy process of processing and subsequent polishing of finished items.
As already mentioned, any beech products should be used only indoors, since in the open air this material very quickly absorbs moisture and rots.
The main physical parameters of this wood are:
- material density - 500-900 kg / m³;
- thermal conductivity - 0.17 W / (m * K);
- tensile strength - 136 N / mm2;
- degree of compressive strength - 60 N / mm2;
- the degree of bending strength is 120 N / mm2.
The yellowish-pink hue of beech wood under the conditions of processing workpieces with hot steam can change its hue to reddish brown, which looks spectacular and noble.
Deciduous beech wood is absolutely odorless, and the strength of the material is largely superior to hardwoods such as birch, cherry or hornbeam.
A tall long-liver with decorative wood can grow both in mountainous terrain and in the forest belt. The straight and even trunk of this tree on a cut, made in the transverse direction, has a beautiful pattern of annual rings, which are closely spaced to each other.
But if you compare beech with oak, then beech wood loses to a large extent in terms of its durability and resistance to decay.
Beech wood absorbs well any type of dye, its color shades can be changed using staining technology, as well as painting with varnishes.
Species overview
Valuable beech wood is cut to produce high-quality planed edged or unedged boards. Beech raw materials are used to make veneer, dry veneer plywood, and furniture board.
Beech lumber, depending on its type, finds itself in various fields of application.
- Edged board - the original blank material is carefully rejected, dried and necessarily processed with special impregnating protective compounds. Thanks to this impregnation, the wood retains its color tone and becomes less susceptible to moisture absorption. Edged material is used for the manufacture of floor elements, staircases, finishing panels and skirting boards are made of it, cabinet furniture is assembled, used as decorative interior decoration in the form of wall panels. The thickness of the material can be from 10 to 50 mm.
- Unedged board - blanks of beech raw materials are processed only along the wide part of the plate, while bark remains on the sides. Such material is somewhat cheaper than the edged counterpart and is used for interior cladding of indoor surfaces.
- Furniture board - most often it is made using beech veneers of various thicknesses and selected cutting angles. The advantage of this material is its beautiful natural pattern, which is used for decorative interior decoration or in the production of furniture facades.
Indoor use of beech is justified by its natural strength and high aesthetic properties.
Areas of use
Despite the high cost of the material, beech wood has a high demand and a wide range of uses. Beech is used for various purposes.
- For arranging the floor surface in the room decorative wood is used as a finishing material. To this end, a spectacular and expensive parquet board is made from wood blanks, which justifies the costs by being resistant to impact and abrasion.
- In residential premises with low traffic, beech is used for the manufacture of exclusive models of internal interfloor stairs... Such a product is a very original decoration in the interior of any home.
- When treated with hot steam, beech has the ability to be very flexible... This effect is used in the manufacture of vintage furniture and musical instruments.
- Thin beech veneer can be artificially dyed in various shades and used for the manufacture of decorative mosaic paintings. The waste wood of this deciduous woody plant is used in the chemical industry in the production of methyl alcohol, tar or creosote oils.
- The beech material is prized for its decorative properties, therefore its use is also justified in the manufacture of gift souvenirs.
The natural dense texture of beech wood fibers makes it possible to make products from it with subsequent grinding, thanks to which you can achieve a perfectly smooth and even surface.
Beech products for any purpose should be protected from moisture.
For this purpose, the wood is impregnated with water-repellent compounds and covered with a protective layer of varnish. for this purpose, the wood is impregnated with water-repellent compounds and covered with a protective layer of varnish.
