Modern design offers a wide range of decorative materials for interior decoration. Their list is updated every year. At the same time, natural materials do not give way to synthetic ones. This rule also applies to wood. This finish has never been considered a relic of the past. It harmoniously fits into any modern interior, complementing it with naturalness, environmental friendliness, and simplicity.

Peculiarities

Decorative boards are made from various types of wood. They differ from each other in hardness, color, pattern and surface texture, which allows expanding design possibilities. Hard rocks are more resistant to adverse factors, while they are distinguished by a high cost, and vice versa.

Depending on the quality of the material made, there are several types of boards with standard markings from A to C. This classification is based on the texture of the board, the accuracy and completeness of processing, the presence of defects and knots.

The texture of the board has a noticeable effect on the final result. Materials with a small, poorly drawn texture will harmoniously fit into any style. A rough and strongly pronounced pattern, the presence of darkening from knots, on the contrary, can spoil it.

Modern interiors will not tolerate poor quality wood. At the same time, the creation of old and traditional styles is impossible without the presence of materials with small defects (cracks, chips, irregularities). In this case, the ideal board will stand out and spoil the overall picture of the interior. But do not overplay: in the future, such defects can ruin the finish, and besides, it will not always be possible to hide them.

It is taking into account all the factors listed above that the cost of materials is formed. On average, depending on the breed and variety, it can range from $ 5 to $ 30 per m². Do not chase low prices and select wood according to the characteristics of the room. For example, larch and oak can withstand high humidity and large temperature changes, but at the same time, it makes no sense to decorate the whole house with them.

Description of species

Today the lumber market is quite diverse, so you can easily find products with the necessary parameters for construction or renovation. They can be used for both interior and exterior decoration. In the first case, an interior board is used, in the second, a front one.

According to the degree of processing, the following types of finishing boards are distinguished.

Unedged

Such boards are made by longitudinal cuts of logs. Their edges are uneven, covered with bark. The cuts are poorly processed, which makes the material coarse texture and low cost.

Such raw boards should be used in themed interiors, for example, for decorating a house in the forest, an extension, a barn, a garage. Due to the uneven edges during finishing, they are attached with an overlap. This increases the consumption of materials, while at the same time gives the interior an unusual look of a hunting lodge.

Trimmed

This is the most common lumber. Boards are made in the sizes established by GOST standards. The technological process consists of 3 stages - cutting the log, planing and grinding all sides - each of which is controlled by workers and equipment. The result is a neat planed board that can be used for a variety of purposes.

In private construction, 5 types of carved boards are used: lining, imitation of a bar, block house, plank and parquet board.

  • The most affordable lumber is considered to be lining. It has been popular since the 20th century. Although today clapboard does not surprise anyone, people continue to use it in the interior due to its pleasant cost. The lining is small in size, especially small in width. It is lightweight, which makes transportation and construction easier. The material is attached to the lathing end-to-end, sometimes it can have grooves. After installation, the lining is covered with varnish or paints, and before that it is treated with special solutions that prevent decay and ignition of the material.
  • An imitation of a bar or a raised beam is an excellent alternative to clapboard. The material has a wider width and smoother corners, so it looks aesthetically pleasing. On the sides, the imitation has spikes and grooves, which facilitates installation and increases the reliability of the structure. The rest of the properties of wood, as well as the fastening features, are almost identical to the lining.
  • The block house differs from previous materials in its shape: one side of it is rounded. This is due to the fact that when cutting logs, the central rectangular parts go to the production of edged boards, and after processing, a block house is obtained from the remaining semicircular parts. It noticeably transforms the appearance of the room: there is a feeling that the house is made of a natural frame.
  • Planken is an analogue of lining, it differs only in the absence of spikes and grooves, as well as in a short length... The longitudinal edges of the material are often cut at an angle, so a parallelogram is obtained in the section. This feature somewhat facilitates the installation process. Planken is made of moisture resistant wood species (larch, pine). It is appropriate to install it in rooms with high air humidity: baths, saunas, baths. During installation, it is necessary to leave small gaps between the planks, since when heated, the wood partially expands.
  • The last option is parquet board. Most often it is used for laying the floor, but it can also be used as a decoration on a limited section of the wall. Visually, the parquet board significantly expands the space when installed horizontally, and when installed vertically, it increases the height of the walls.

Quality lumber will be expensive for the builder. These costs can be reduced by using their synthetic counterparts, for example, polyurethane boards. Of course, here is only the name from them, because real boards are made only of wood.

Polyurethane boards have a number of advantages over wooden boards. The plastic they are made of has a small mass, does not differ in appearance from painted wooden boards. Polyurethane materials are not subject to decay processes. They are non-flammable, which makes them not only a cheap and practical material, but also safe.

Design options

Wood structures are versatile as they go well with any interior. This is a natural material that will decorate the premises in the apartment and house. Wooden board goes well with plaster and stone, brickwork, and sometimes even wallpaper.

Various types of wood are used in many modern styles and eco-trends. They fit well into the most minimalistic interior, soften the cold hi-tech range, perfectly complement the brick walls and metal structures of the loft. And the design of ethnic and retro interiors cannot do without wood at all.

The color of materials is the main parameter that affects their perception. It is preferable to varnish the boards to maintain their natural appearance. If paint is used, choose pastel shades: white, beige, cream. This way you will maintain the calm and serene environment that wood creates. If the walls of the room are initially white, dark wood can be used in addition to them.Such an interior will become rich and interesting.

For cladding a children's room, gazebo or veranda, you can use multi-colored boards. Please note: the colors should be discreet and combined with each other, then the structure will not strain the eyes, and the wood will retain all its aesthetic qualities.

How are boards used?

In the interior of the house, decorative boards should be used to a limited extent.

If the inside of the house is completely trimmed with wood, visually it will look boring.

Do the sheathing in dosage: decorate individual walls or parts of them with a board, make a wooden floor or install boards on the ceiling. This decor will make your home feel fresh and not force you to throw all your money out of your wallet.

Wood can be sheathed in the bedside area, the wall behind the TV or paintings. Wall boards are laid both vertically and horizontally, and the borders are closed with slats. It can be mounted either on the crate, if the whole wall is decorated, or directly to a flat surface.

In general, the wood flooring has good performance characteristics. But they do not matter if the boards are used solely for decorative purposes. Correctly selected materials, their size and color are guaranteed to make even the most dull interior unusual.
