The second light is an ancient architectural trick that lifts the main room space up two stories. But how to do this if the house is one-story? We will tell you about the features of such a layout in our article.

Advantages and disadvantages

The second light is a hall without a ceiling. It is absent only above one large room, from which a staircase leads to the second or attic floors to other living quarters.

As for the one-story building, there is no ceiling in the living room, and the space is increased by the attic area. Thanks to this layout, intricate broken roof lines can be observed in the room. There are several window openings - on the first and attic floors. The upper window becomes an additional second light for the living room. Often, large continuous panoramic windows are designed, extending from the first tier to the very roof.

Layout with a second light is not found in every home. Despite the obvious advantages, the double space also has enough opponents. Before deciding on high ceilings, you should weigh the pros and cons. Let's start with the merits.

  • A house with a second light is spectacular inside and out.
  • The living room is filled with light and air. To maintain a sense of volume, they try not to overload it with furniture and even make the stairs transparent, as if floating in the air.
  • An unusual large room lends itself well to zoning. Everything that is necessary for life can be placed on one territory: a kitchen, a dining room, a living room, a cozy corner for relaxing by the fireplace.
  • A huge extraordinary space is the dream of any designer, in which he can embody all his fantasies and create a unique interior.
  • A beautiful natural or urban landscape is often observed behind the panoramic windows.
  • It is pleasant to meet guests in the spacious hall, where everyone can find a cozy place.
  • The high space allows the use of extraordinary decor, which is impossible in a room with conventional ceilings. For example, it is quite possible to buy an elongated hanging chandelier with an extravagant design or install a tub with a palm tree on two floors.
  • The hall, which goes under the very roof, is unusual, looks majestic and adds status to the owner.

As for the shortcomings, unfortunately, they also exist.

  • A room requires effort and investment to create additional insulation, because the roof is visible above the head and there is no attic, which creates an air cushion that insulates the house. We'll have to install the "warm floor" system, install additional radiators.
  • If you need a useful area of the attic, then because of the layout with a second light, it will be lost.
  • The powerful acoustics of the large hall will interfere with those in other rooms; sound insulation will be needed.
  • If there is room in the main room for a kitchen or dining room, the smells will also be carried throughout the house.
  • Serving a large room is not easy at all - it will take special efforts to hang curtains, change a light bulb, do cleaning and even more repairs.
  • Not everyone will like large windows that open up a private space.

Projects

If the difficulties did not frighten, but only strengthened the decision to build a house with a second light, we suggest paying attention to some projects.

The drawing of a one-story frame house with a terrace has dimensions of 12.5 by 8 square meters. m. From the living room with a second light, the doors open onto the entrance hall, dining room and one of the bedrooms. The entrance to the second bedroom is located in the kitchen.

A house made of timber measuring 9.4 x 9.9 sq.m has three bedrooms, two of them have entrances from the hall, and the third from the hall. The main living room with a second light is located in a remote part of the house, which protects it from drafts.

In one-story houses, stairs are often absent. But sometimes, it can lead from the hall to the observation deck or to the entrance to the attic, located above other rooms. In any case, a good design of the soaring steps becomes the main decoration of the living room.

Design

The design of a wooden, brick or block house with a second light makes it extraordinarily attractive. Halls with double ceilings suit many areas:

  • a cozy wooden house with a chalet-style fireplace, located in the mountains;
  • a hall with a second light in a Scandinavian interior is endowed with a viewing mini-floor;
  • Provence living room with fireplace is comfortable at home;
  • a room in a modern style with large panoramic windows, allowing you to overlook the tranquil landscape of the countryside;
  • loft in the interior with large-scale glazing.

Beautiful examples

Rooms with a second light, decorated by designers, are always beautiful and cozy. This can be seen with examples:

  • hall with a large zoned area;
  • winter Garden;
  • beautiful landscape behind panoramic windows;
