Cummins Diesel Generator Review
Power supply to remote facilities and elimination of the consequences of various failures are the main area of activity of diesel power plants. But it is already clear that this equipment has a very important function. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully familiarize yourself with the review of Cummins diesel generators, take into account all their subtleties and nuances when choosing.
Peculiarities
When characterizing Cummins generators and diesel power plants produced by the same company, it must be emphasized that they are produced by a genuine industrial giant. Yes, a giant of an industry that has already been declared unnecessary and archaic organizations. The company has been operating since 1919, and its products are well known in various countries of the world. The production of diesel and gas piston power plants, as well as parts and spare parts for them, are the priority areas of Cummins activity.
The compact generator sets from this manufacturer are available in capacities ranging from 15 to 3750 kVA. Of course, the compactness of the most powerful of them is revealed only when compared with competitors' products. The engine running time is very long. For some advanced versions, it exceeds 25,000 hours.
It is also worth noting:
advanced radiators;
the strictest implementation of basic technological and environmental standards;
thoughtful management (technically perfect, but at the same time not causing difficulties even for inexperienced people);
ease of daily operation and maintenance;
debugged top-level service.
The lineup
It should be noted right away that Cummins diesel generators are divided into two groups - with a current frequency of 50 and 60 Hz. The first group includes, for example, the C17 D5 model. She is able to develop power up to 13 kW. The device usually has an open design scheme. It is also delivered in a container (on a special chassis) _ because this generator turns out to be a true "all-rounder", suitable for a variety of tasks.
Other parameters:
voltage 220 or 380 V;
hourly fuel consumption at a power of 70% of the maximum - 2.5 liters;
starting with an electric starter;
cooling liquid type.
A more powerful and advanced option is the C170 D5 diesel generator. The manufacturer positions its product as a reliable solution for uninterrupted power supply to various objects. In the main mode, the power is 124 kW, and in the standby mode, 136 kW. Voltage ratings and starting method are the same as for the previous model.
For an hour at 70% load, approximately 25.2 liters of fuel will be consumed. In addition to the usual design, there is also an option in a noise suppressing housing.
If we talk about generators with a current frequency of 60 Hz, then the C80 D6 attracts attention. This three-phase machine can deliver up to 121 A. The total power is 58 kW. In standby mode, it increases to 64 kW. The total weight of the product (including the fuel tank) is 1050 kg.
Finally, consider a more powerful 60 Hz generator set, more specifically the C200 D6e. The device generates 180 kW of current in normal daily mode. In the forced temporary mode, this figure rises to 200 kW. The delivery set includes a special cover. The control panel is version 2.2.
Criterias of choice
Determining the required power
By purchasing a diesel silent 3 kW electric generator, it is easy to ensure peace and quiet at the facility. But it will not be possible to "feed" sufficiently powerful electrical devices, machines and apparatus. That's why on serious industrial, construction sites and in other similar places, you will have to put up with significant noise.
Note: Country of origin for Cummins generators is not necessarily the United States. Some of the production facilities are located in China, England and India.
But returning to the calculation of the required power, it is worth pointing out for a start that it is carried out according to three important criteria:
the nature of energy consumption;
the total capacity of all consumers;
the value of starting currents.
It is generally accepted that equipment with a capacity of 10 kW or even less is needed for repair and construction. Such devices provide the most stable current. Power from 10 to 50 kW allows the generator to be used not just as a reserve, but also as the main source of power supply. Mobile plants with a capacity of 50-100 kW are often converted into a stationary power source for the entire facility. Finally, for large enterprises, cottage settlements and transport infrastructure, models from 100 to 1000 kW are needed.
Purpose and operating conditions
If these parameters are not taken into account, the repair of generating equipment will have to be carried out very often. And it is not a fact that it will really help. So, household generators, even the most powerful ones, are unlikely to be able to work for a long time at maximum conditions, feeding the production line. And industrial-grade products, in turn, cannot pay off at home.
With regard to normal operating conditions, then for almost all models they are as follows:
ambient temperature from 20 to 25 degrees;
its relative humidity is about 40%;
normal atmospheric pressure;
height above sea level no more than 150-300 m.
But a lot depends on the execution of the generator. So, the presence of a protective casing allows you to work confidently even in severe frost. The level of permissible humidity increases to 80-90%. Still, normal use of a diesel engine is unthinkable without a stable air flow. And you also need to take care of protecting even the most reliable and proven devices from dust.
Required number of phases
A three-phase diesel power plant can supply current to both three-phase and single-phase "consumers". But this does not mean that it is always better than the single-phase version. The fact is that from a single-phase output on a three-phase device, more than 30% of the power cannot be removed... Rather, it is practically possible, but no one guarantees the safety and stability of work.
Generator type
The following types of Cummins devices are distinguished:
in the casing;
in a block container;
AD series.
engine's type
Cummins is ready to supply 2-stroke and 4-stroke diesel generators. The rotation speed is also different. Low-noise devices spin at 1500 rpm. The more advanced ones make 3000 rpm, but they make much louder noise. A synchronous unit, in contrast to an asynchronous one, is suitable for powering devices that are sensitive to voltage drops. Also, there is a difference between engines in the following properties:
limiting power;
volume;
the amount of lubricant;
number of cylinders and their location.
