Every December, in almost any apartment in the country, preparations are in full swing for one of the most important holidays - the New Year. Gifts are purchased for relatives and friends, a menu for the festive table is drawn up, and most importantly, a Christmas tree is being dressed up.

They decorate the green "guest" with toys and garlands, hang tinsel and shiny "rain" on it, sprinkle it with artificial snow. Nevertheless, the most traditional decoration of the New Year tree is considered to be a variety of glass balls hanging on the branches.

History of appearance

A long time ago, the ancient Celts living in a country called Bohemia (the outdated name of the Czech Republic) had a custom once a year to sacrifice to their gods and spirits. This was done in order to earn their favor, to protect themselves and loved ones from diseases, crop failure and natural disasters. A sacred tree in those days was not considered a tree at all, and not even a pine, but an ordinary apple tree. This tree was mainly decorated with edible offerings: nuts, apples, eggs or gingerbread. Each type of delicacy was a symbol of a certain “good”, for example, nuts were offered to reveal the mysteries, and sweets were offered to bless the family.

Fruits and sweets were not just hung out on the apple tree, they were painted with paints, wrapped in festive paper and foil. During the festive fun and dancing, such "gifts" were eaten by the hosts and guests, and the packaging remained hanging on the branches. The most important treat of the holiday was considered to be apples, which are responsible for fertility and productivity. They were taken back in September and carefully stored until the very frost. It was this fruit that became the prototype of the first glass Christmas balls that adorn millions of Christmas trees around the globe every year.

According to an old legend, in one of the lean years in Bohemia, there were not enough apples with which to decorate the sacred tree. Then the best glass blowers volunteered to make a substitute for juicy fruit on their own. They made multicolored beads from the finest glass, which were to the liking of many buyers.

Since then, their production has grown and began to bring large profits, the idea was picked up first in Europe, and later around the globe. One of the highest quality and most expensive versions of this decoration is still considered to be handmade balls made of Czech glass, and the word "bohemian" acquired the meaning of "expensive" and "elite".

Features of choice

Purchased Christmas balls should be not only beautiful, but also of high quality, then this fragile material will last much longer.

When buying, you should pay attention to some important aspects.

  • Price. Quality glass items may not cost the same as plastic balls. You should be prepared for the fact that decorating a Christmas tree with classic glass balls can result in a decent amount.
  • Store profile. You should not buy glass balls in transitions and from your hands. In addition, in small shops near the house, Christmas tree decorations of dubious quality may also be sold. The highest quality products can be bought directly from the manufacturer or ordered by the master yourself. However, the price of such products will be much higher.
  • Appearance. There should be no chips or scuffs on the ball. It must be heavy enough, because the denser the glass, the more it weighs.Nevertheless, a branch of both natural and artificial spruce or pine should not bend under the weight of one ball, otherwise it will simply fall off it and break. Before buying, you can slightly lift the metal mount and see how the top edge of the ball is processed. On a quality product, the glass cut should be smooth and polished.
  • Sequins. You can lightly rub the shiny ball with your fingers to see if all the glitter and decorations are firmly adhered to it. Nothing should rattle inside such a ball, and in case of a light collision with another glass product, it should ring thinly.
  • Suspension. The larger and heavier the ball, the tighter and tighter the tape or rope on which it hangs should be. It is best if a ready-made mount is attached to the ball, since when tying it yourself, there is a high risk of dropping and splitting a fragile toy.
  • Package. On the box with one or more balloons, the manufacturer must be indicated with its address and telephone number. It must also indicate the full name of the product and its composition. Everything should be written so that the information can be easily read.

Storage and use

Glass is a rather fragile material, therefore it requires special attention during use and storage.

  • You need to hang the balls so that they do not touch the floor, each other and other pieces of furniture. The loop of thread or tape should be put on as deep as possible on the branch so as not to slip or fall off it. Do not hang two or three toys on one branch, it will bend under their weight and everything will break.
  • You should not place the garland too close to the surface of the balls, the bulbs should never touch their surface. If the family has large pets that do not sit in cages, or small children, then it is worth giving up glass toys. They can not only break, but also injure a child or puppy. If you still want to hang an expensive decoration, it is best to choose a place for it at a height so that little hooligans do not reach for the alluring shine.
  • After the New Year holidays, glass balls should be wiped with a dry cloth and wrapped in old newspaper or paper. Glass toys should be folded into a dense plastic or cardboard box with a soft cloth at the bottom. It is best to store such a box in a dry, dark place: in a closet or pantry. Access to glass toys should be limited to animals and children.

In addition, you should not put such a box on top of a tower from other boxes, otherwise you can drop it and find only fragments instead of colorful balls inside.

DIY decoration

If the finished glass jewelry seems too expensive or not original enough, you can make them yourself using various patterns, beads and ribbons. To do this, you will need ordinary transparent or solid-colored balls, which are much cheaper than the colored options.

You can decorate handicrafts using several techniques.

  • Paisley patterns. Such patterns are applied using brushes and acrylic paints, as well as paints of the same color, but in two shades: light and dark. You can complement such balls with a ribbon of a suitable color or pattern.
  • Texts with congratulations. Balls with the wishes of "Love", "Happiness" or "Good Luck" will become an excellent decoration for the Christmas tree. You can simply write the phrases, or you can lay them out with sparkles, having previously designated the word with glue and rolling the ball over a scattering of sparkles.
  • Staining from the inside. Even brushes are not needed for such staining. It is enough to remove the metal mount from the ball, pour a small amount of paint into it and, putting on the mount, roll the ball in different planes. Such a toy will look especially interesting if you pour paints of several colors into it, which, when mixed, will create interesting blurry patterns.
  • Patterns and pictures. With sufficient artistic skills, you can paint whole New Year's pictures with a Christmas tree, Santa Claus and various animals on the glass. Those who do not have such abilities can limit themselves to drawing various stars or snowflakes. For a smoother pattern, you can use small stencils made of plain thin paper.
  • With glued decor. Toys can be pasted over with rhinestones and beads, multi-colored ribbons and artificial flowers. Make bulky parts of polymer clay on them and even glue them with decorative tape. Christmas balls in a marine theme, decorated with sand and shells will look original.
  • With sequins. Any pattern can be drawn on the ball first with glue, and then rolled or sprinkled on top with ordinary glitter. Large sparkles from Christmas crackers and tiny grains of sand for nail design or makeup are perfect.

These balls will not just serve as a decoration for the Christmas tree. This handmade product will be an excellent gift for friends and colleagues as an independent present or in addition to a basket of cosmetics or sweets. And painting such balloons will take the whole family, from grandparents to children, for several warm family evenings that will be remembered for a long time.
