The most interesting communication, as a rule, does not take place at a large solemn table in the living room, but in a cozy atmosphere in the kitchen over a cup of tea, and in this case, hard stools and chairs definitely lose out to a soft comfortable sofa. Considering the small size of the room, narrow sofa models harmoniously fit into the interior of the kitchen, creating a comfortable atmosphere for a pleasant conversation. Due to their compactness, they can be placed both along a wall or window, and in the middle of a studio apartment to visually delimit the space.

Features, pros and cons

Combining the functions of chairs, sofa and bed, the narrow model has obvious advantages:

  • Creates a comfortable environment in small functional rooms (in the kitchen, balcony, veranda);
  • Allows you to place several people without hesitation along the table or in a circle, disposed to a friendly conversation;
  • Contains an inner wardrobe for bed linen (in the bedroom) or for kitchen utensils (in the kitchen), or an alternative to a closet close at hand;
  • Folding models have an extra bed for emergencies;
  • A variety of styles and colors allows you to choose a sofa to match any interior and for the most demanding taste.

Among the minor inconveniences of a narrow sofa are:

  • the need to unfold and collect daily in case it is used as a bed;
  • the disassembled surface may be uneven, causing slight discomfort;
  • straight sofas take up all the space along the wall, limiting movement in the room.

Varieties

When buying a narrow sofa, you should proceed from several selection criteria, since the models differ in shape, mechanism of action, and assembly options.

Forms of sofas:

  • straight... A practical model, often used in the kitchen or balcony to save space and in a compact form in the form of a bench, which can accommodate several people at the same time. As a rule, it contains a folding seat with a spacious box for the necessary accessories inside, which is indispensable in small spaces.
  • corner... The ideal solution for a small kitchen, where the seat takes up minimal space, without limiting the work area and creating a cozy corner for relaxing and eating. As well as the direct version, it can be collapsible with an additional berth for guests or for the inhabitants of a one-room apartment.
  • semicircular... More popular in large room formats where there is no need to fold out a sofa. The non-standard design attracts the eye, however, it requires a scrupulous approach to the choice for a harmonious combination with the main interior

Mechanism type

Folding narrow sofas have three main ways of converting a sofa into a sleeping place:

  1. The mechanism "dolphin" consists in the fact that the seat is pulled towards itself like drawers of a chest of drawers;
  2. The accordion sofa stretches like the bellows of a musical instrument of the same name, forming a sleeping place on stable supports;
  3. The “book” model unfolds the seat of the sofa, which consists of two halves and fixes it with a special mechanism;
  4. "Eurobook" is pulled out similarly to the "dolphin" model, but the back is lowered to the freed place.

Design

In cramped living quarters, preference is given to direct models, since the corner option will either problematically fit into the interior, or it will look like a stumbling block in the middle of the room. In this case, there are the following design options:

  • Unbreakable a sofa with minimal coverage of space, but the lack of the ability to convert it into a bed;
  • Unfolding miniature models that serve as a recreation area during the day and a place to sleep at night;
  • Mini sofa, which can stand both along the wall and by the window, and is preferable for small squares;
  • Sofa with minibar, side shelves, built-in lamps and folding tables.

Equipment

The kitchen version of the narrow sofas is offered in two aspects:

  • Separate models, that is, only a sofa is purchased, and the required accompanying elements (table, chairs) must be selected separately;
  • A set that includes stools, table, ottomans. This is a very rational option to use the kitchen space and create a relaxation area in a single style direction.

Color solutions

The sofa should not fall out of the overall picture of the interior, either in shape or in color, therefore, its color scheme should be combined with walls, curtains, pieces of furniture, and also its location should be taken into account. For example:

  • formal setting (office, living room) corresponds to a blue or red tint;
  • in the Gothic style, gray, black or white furniture will look better;
  • warm green or brown tones will favorably emphasize the country style;
  • the pastel colors of the sofa will be irresistible in any interior.

To emphasize the advantages and hide the disadvantages of the room, you can play with the color and advantageous placement of the sofa:

  • a sense of spaciousness can be achieved by choosing a sofa with upholstery to match the walls and installing it on the narrow side;
  • a sofa with bright colors by the window and curtains matched to it will visually enlarge the room and give the elongated layout a more square shape;
  • pastel colors of the room will not look pale and lifeless if you place a sofa with bright upholstery.

Materials (edit)

Modern technologies allow you to choose the right sofa material, depending on where it will be located, for which it will be used and the financial capacity of the buyer.

Upholstery

For the kitchen, fabric upholstery is rarely used due to the increased risk of contamination and a short service life, therefore, the ideal coating is considered:

  • Artificial leather (leatherette) - durable, easy to clean, has a wide selection of colors for any interior, but quickly loses its appearance;
  • Leather - ideal for use, but not designed for the average consumer;
  • Flock resistant to frequent washing and will delight you with a palette of tones and shades.

For sofas in the living room or children's room use:

  • Velours - soft and pleasant to the touch material with a velvety surface, which gives richness to the decoration;
  • Jacquard it is used for models in the nursery, as it is resistant to frequent cleaning with cleaning agents (except for liquid) and retains an attractive appearance for a long time.

Frame

The sofa production is based on:

  • chrome steel;
  • MDF;
  • multilayer waterproof plywood;
  • Chipboard.

Despite the more presentable appearance of wooden structures, a metal frame is preferable in the kitchen due to the sharp change in temperature and humidity. However, modern manufacturers offer high-quality types of wood, which are impregnated with protective solutions, which helps to protect furniture from swelling or cracking.

Filler

The main advantage of the sofa is its "filling", which, in fact, provides a feeling of comfort. It is important that the sofa retains its integral shape and seat density for a long time, therefore they use:

  • foam rubber, mainly of Norwegian and German production, which is able to quickly return to its original shape, without forming dents and gathering into lumps. Does not accumulate dust and dirt, high-quality foam rubber does not become moldy and is not a source of allergies;
  • polyurethane foam, or polyurethane foam (standard, increased rigidity, hard, soft, super soft, highly elastic), absolutely environmentally friendly material made of synthetic polymers, which gives the sofa elasticity and adaptation to the body;
  • sintepon (more often for the back of a sofa) - moisture resistant, elastic, it gives relief and softness, having thermal insulation properties;
  • durafil –Soft, fluffy, highly elastic fabric, similar to a spring block, which prevents the back and seat of the sofa from deforming after pressing with all the load;
  • springs "snake" or independent springs. The second option is preferable due to the placement of the spirals in separate textile covers, which ensures the stability of the supporting base and an even surface for a long time;
  • spring block Bonnell - frame made of springs of continuous weave, providing an orthopedic effect and an increased degree of comfort during rest.

Selection Tips

The choice of a narrow sofa should be approached by weighing and carefully considering several aspects:

  • Dimensions of the room. If the sofa is purchased for the kitchen, it must be borne in mind that the dining area should occupy a smaller area than the working area and the sofa should be both comfortable and practical.
  • Number of seats. Do not forget to take into account not only the owners of the house, but also the guests who often gather at the same table and need comfortable accommodation.
  • Price... Find a good value for money even on a tight budget, since you are choosing furniture for the long term. Do not lose sight of the reliability of the structure, the quality of the external and internal materials and the mechanism that is convenient in a particular room
  • Combination of color and style. All pieces of furniture and furnishings of the room should be designed in the same style and combined in color.

It is worth remembering that the material world does not determine the relationship between people, but it can qualitatively affect the microclimate in the family and create a favorable environment for communication.
