Choosing curtains for a teenage girl

In order to choose curtains for a teenage girl's room, you need to focus both on her own desires (after all, in adolescents they are already expressed very clearly), and on practicality.

The correct selection of material and non-brand colors, coupled with a style suitable for the mood and character of the girl, is a real success.

Length and style

First of all, when decorating a teenager's room, you need to take into account that this is no longer just a sleeping and play area, but, firstly, a small office, and secondly, a personal space, which is very important for teenagers. Therefore, note the option of short translucent curtains right away - the girl is unlikely to be delighted with this. She will want to limit her personal space.

The length of the curtains should at least reach the window sill and not touch the floor - this is impractical and visually loads the room.

Regarding the style and shape of the curtains, experts advise avoiding complex multi-layered draperies. Your daughter has probably grown out of age when she wants to be a princess with a canopy and roman shades. Teenage girls often strive for minimalism, brevity and, in part, even perfectionism. And also, such curtains will accumulate dust in a larger volume, which is not good for the girl's health, and they will have to be washed more often for the same reason. However, if, in addition to curtains, you also have tulle, there is nothing wrong with that. On the contrary, it can give the girl a sense of her space - as the window will be even more closed.

An interesting idea would be curtains-stripes like blinds, but made of fabric. This will give the room a hi-tech touch.

Colour

There is an opinion that certain colors in the interior are tuned to certain moods. For example, red encourages actions that are often not entirely deliberate, purple encourages creativity, and so on. There is some truth in this. So pay attention to the range of colors and why they might work for a teenager.

  • Pastel colors - blue, purple, lilac and so on. These pacifying shades win over bright and juicy ones, as they tune in to rest, which is especially important for a 13-16-year-old teenager who is tired after a school day. Moreover, the pastel shade allows you to find a compromise between your desire and your daughter's desire - almost every bright color has a more muted tone. It is not worth taking the same shades as ivory, milk or creme brulee, because the curtains will quickly get dirty.
  • Various brown shades - from coffee with milk to chocolate. This is a timeless classic, but not as boring as black and white or gray scale. Due to, indeed, a large palette, it will be possible to arrange all haberdashery in these shades, and start with curtains. Moreover, lately, the nude-brown range has been gaining momentum in cosmetic products, so it is highly likely that the girl will want to follow this trend in everything.
  • Blue, purple and green gamut. Pleasant cold shades of marine (without a pronounced green undertone) will create a feeling of coolness, which means freshness, which is associated with relaxation. Add lavender, pistachio, sapphire, indigo, cobalt, moon to the pastel blue.

Set aside fabrics for curtains in bright colors, especially reds, yellows and oranges - they are distracting and prevent you from concentrating. The eye constantly clings to them, and therefore it is very difficult to concentrate. Do not go for dark tones, especially raven, black and dark gray.

They, just like the acid-bright ones, attract attention, and additionally they also drive you into a bad mood. Agree, seeing a large dark spot instead of a window after a hard, nervous day at school is not very pleasant.

In contrast to dark shades, you should not use pure white, snowy. The look from him gets tired, and this is proven by research.

Just as we cannot stare at the snow for a long time, we cannot stare directly at the white curtains. Moreover, in the average nursery interior, a bright white spot will look just as out of place as a black one.

Another issue is prints. You can't say for sure. Of course, coloring in a small flower or asterisks will not bother anyone, including the eyes, but it's worth thinking about whole paintings on fabric. How they will look in the interior as a whole and will not bother the teenager, that is the question.

Textile

We advise you to take the choice of fabric completely into your own hands, as this is a matter of practicality, which a teenage girl is unlikely to already understand.

Pay special attention to if she is allergic to any type of fabric - and, of course, exclude them from the list. Traditionally, it is customary to choose curtains from natural fabrics - silk, cotton, linen, polyester will also look good. All options have their pros and cons. Let's figure it out.

  • Cotton. Not suitable if the windows are located on the sunny side, as it quickly burns out. As environmentally friendly as possible, if polyester is not added to it, which contributes to resistance to fading.
  • Linen. Unlike cotton, it almost does not fade. It crumbles quickly, but my daughter may even like this effect. Very durable. Due to the fact that it shrinks when washing, linen curtains always have a rather large allowance in length.
  • Polyester. There are 90/10 modifications with cotton. Inexpensive, it gets along with any natural and living conditions, such as frequent ironing, washing (but at a temperature of no more than 40 degrees).
  • Wool. Requires the same care as a full fur coat or your own hair due to animal origin. Ideal for houses located on the north side, as wool curtains will also keep warmth in the room.
  • Silk. The option is more luxurious than the previous ones. However, it loses its amazing shine after being exposed to the weather, and after 200 hours of such use it ceases to be durable. In order to avoid this, you need to take silk curtains with a lining - then everything will be fine with strength and shine. And if you need to look after wool curtains like a pet, then silk is literally a family member who needs to be cared for and cherished no less than a teenage girl.

Based on what styles it is not recommended to use (reminder - multi-layered, bulky and heavy), do not take organza, taffeta.

And also when it comes to choosing curtains, never order them via the Internet - this is fabric, you need to touch it, touch it, look under different lighting. And be sure to familiarize yourself with the composition of the fabric.

Summing up, I would like to say that the choice of curtains in the room of a teenage girl should be carried out directly with her participation. So you choose the option that is ideal in appearance and practicality, do not quarrel over the fact that she does not like the curtains already purchased, and, perhaps, even get closer.
