Overview of the Leica DISTO laser rangefinders
Measuring distances and the size of objects has been of interest to people since ancient times. Today it is possible to use high-precision instruments for these purposes - DISTO laser rangefinders. Let's try to figure out what these devices are, as well as how to use them correctly.
Description of the device and principle of operation
Laser rangefinders are a kind of advanced tape measure. Determination of the distance separating the device from the desired object occurs due to focused (coherent) electromagnetic radiation. Any modern rangefinder can operate in pulsed, phase and mixed modes. Phase mode involves sending signals with a frequency of 10-150 MHz. When the device is switched to pulse mode, it delays sending pulses from time to time.
Even the most "simple" laser rangefinders can measure distances of 40-60 m. More advanced devices are capable of working with sections up to 100 m. And the most advanced models designed for professionals measure objects up to 250 m.
By the time it took for the light beam to reach the reflector and return, one can judge the distance between it and the laser. Impulse devices can measure the greatest distances / They are also capable of working in stealth mode, as a result of which they are used in various sights.
The phase range finder works a little differently. The object is illuminated by radiation of different frequencies. The phase shift shows how far the device is from the “target”. The absence of a timer reduces the cost of the device. But phase meters will not be able to work normally if the object is more than 1000 m from the observer. Reflection can occur from different work planes. They can be:
- walls;
- floors;
- ceilings.
The calculations are done by adding the wavelengths returned from the desired object. The result obtained is reduced by 50%. Clipped wave metrics are also added. The final digit is displayed. An electronic storage medium can store the results of previous measurements.
Technical characteristics and purpose
The Leica DISTO laser distance meter is mainly used for measuring distances. Unlike ordinary roulette, it is convenient to work with it even alone. Importantly, the speed and accuracy of measurements are significantly increased. In general, laser rangefinders are used in a wide variety of areas:
- in construction;
- in military affairs;
- in the agricultural industry;
- in land management and cadastral surveying;
- on the hunt;
- in the preparation of maps and topographic plans of the area.
Modern measuring technology can be successfully used both in open areas and in closed rooms. However, the measurement error in different conditions can vary greatly (up to 3 times). Some modifications of rangefinders are able to determine the area and volume of a building, apply the Pythagorean theorem to determine the length of the segments, and so on. Measurements can be taken even where it is impossible or very difficult to climb with mechanical tape measures. Leica DISTO rangefinders can have a number of auxiliary functions:
- measurement of angles;
- determination of the period of time;
- determination of the height of the studied subject;
- the ability to measure the reflecting surface;
- finding out the largest and smallest distances to the plane of interest to the observer;
- performance of work in light rain (drizzle) - it all depends on the specific model.
Varieties and their features
One of the best models of laser rangefinders is now considered Leica DISTO D2 New... As its name suggests, this is an updated version. The new electronic roulette has become more perfect in comparison with the “ancestor” which has gained great popularity. But at the same time, she did not lose either compactness or simplicity. Distinguishing between new and old models is quite easy because the design has become much more modern.
The designers have developed an unusual rubberized case - therefore, the rangefinder's resistance to adverse conditions has increased dramatically. The measurement range has also increased (up to 100 m). Importantly, the increase in the measured distance did not reduce the measurement accuracy.
Thanks to modern interfaces, it has become possible to link the rangefinder with tablets and smartphones. The device can operate at temperatures from - 10 to + 50 degrees.
Leica DISTO D2 New Equipped with a high-brightness screen. Consumers also appreciated the multifunctional brace. To summarize, we can say that this is a relatively simple and reliable device that performs a basic set of measurements. Standard equipment allows you to work only indoors. But this version, of course, does not end the assortment.
Deserves attention and Leica DISTO D510... According to experts, this is one of the most modern modifications. It can be successfully used both in construction and in planning work in open areas. The device is equipped with a large color display. It simplifies the taking of readings and further calculations that the operator must already do.
The rangefinder has a fourfold magnification for clear aiming at distant objects. This property brings it closer to the telescopes of geodetic instruments. Measurements at a distance of 200 m are carried out as quickly as possible. Leica DISTO D510 equipped with a powerful processor that efficiently processes graphic information. Provides wireless data transmission using the Bluetooth protocol.
The manufacturer claims that the device can:
- transfer contact with water;
- survive the fall;
- used in dusty places;
- create drawings in real time (when interacting with Apple technology).
A good alternative could be Leica DISTO X310... According to the manufacturer, this rangefinder is very effectively protected from moisture and contact with dust. When assembling the case and installing the keyboard, special seals are used. After dropping the device into the dirt, it is enough to wash it with water and continue working. Quality control at the factory always implies a functional check when dropped from 2 m.
Distances up to 120 m are successfully measured. The measurement error is 0.001 m. The measurement results are stored in the device's memory. The tilt sensor has been greatly improved. This makes it easy to abandon the additional building level, thanks to a special bracket, you can confidently take measurements from hard-to-reach corners.
Leica DISTO D5 - the very first model of this brand, equipped with a digital video camera. As a result, it was possible to improve the accuracy of measurements at significant distances. Without the use of a precision sight, it would be impossible to provide guidance to objects that are located at a distance of up to 200 m. What is important, the viewfinder is able to magnify the image by 4 times. The rangefinder body is coated with a layer that absorbs impact or fall energy.
The D5 stores the last 20 measurements. Consumers note that the keyboard is quite simple to use - it is very logical. Measurement at a distance of up to 100 m is performed even without auxiliary reflectors. Therefore, the rangefinder is well suited for cadastral work, landscape design, and surveying. Using it is no more difficult than a banal bubble level.
If you need an economy-class measuring device, it makes sense to opt for Leica DISTO D210... This device has become a replacement for the very popular, but already outdated D2 laser roulette. The designers were able to make the meter more powerful.Moreover, it works even in 10-degree frost. The display has also been improved: thanks to the soft backlighting in gray tones, it shows all the information more clearly than before. Accuracy has increased by 50%. The delivery set includes a comfortable carrying bag. The rangefinder can be easily attached to your own wrist thanks to a special strap. The device consumes little current and can work even when powered by a pair of small batteries. A number of important features are supported:
- measuring the areas of rectangles;
- continuous measurement;
- setting out points;
- volume calculation.
Leica DISTO S910 Is not one laser rangefinder, but a whole set. It includes an adapter, tripod, charger and a durable plastic case. The developers proceeded from the fact that in many cases people need not only certain numbers, but also exact coordinates. Using the included tripod, you can measure the heights of straight lines and the length of tilted objects. Due to the adapter, the error is reduced, and the aiming at distant objects is facilitated.
Another electronic laser rangefinder that deserves attention - Leica DISTO D1... It can measure anything at distances up to 40 m, while the measurement error is 0.002 m. However, such "not impressive" characteristics are fully compensated by the compactness of the device. The mass of D1 is 0.087 kg, and the dimensions of the case are 0.15x0.105x0.03 m. A pair of AAA batteries is used as a power source, the rangefinder operates at a temperature of 0-40 degrees.
Leica DISTO D3A can work at a distance of up to 100 m, storing the results of 20 measurements. Camcorder and Bluetooth are not provided in this model. But it can continuously measure objects, carry out indirect measurement of distances in two and three dimensions, estimate the largest and smallest distances. The functionality provides for determining the area of a triangle and a rectangle. The rangefinder can also set out points.
Leica DISTO A5 measures distances not only in millimeters, but also in feet and inches. The declared measurement error is 0.002 m. The largest working distance is 80 m. The delivery set includes a cover, a cord for fastening on the arm and a plate that returns light. As for the rangefinder Leica DISTO CRF 1600-R, then this is a purely hunting device and cannot be compared directly with a construction tool.
How do I calibrate?
No matter how perfect a laser rangefinder is, calibration must be done. It is she who allows you to find out the real accuracy of the device. Calibration is performed annually. Be sure to inspect the device before that to make sure it is in good working order. Testing is carried out only during the first calibration, it is not required in the future. Accuracy can be set in two ways. Special laboratories can measure:
- the greatest power;
- average pulse energy;
- wave frequency;
- error;
- divergence of light;
- the sensitivity level of the receiving device.
The second approach involves determining the damping factor. It is measured in the field. It is impossible to calibrate the rangefinder yourself. The help of specialized companies is required. Based on the results of their work, they issue a metrological certificate.
What to look for when choosing?
The main criteria for choosing will be:
- rangefinder weight;
- its dimensions;
- measurement accuracy;
- the largest measurement distance;
- and only last but not least, additional functions.
Additionally, they pay attention to:
- power supply parameters;
- clarity of the picture;
- ability to work outdoors.
User manual
To measure the distance as accurately as possible, you need a special tripod. In bright light, reflectors are indispensable. They are also used when measuring close to the maximum distance. Whenever possible, work outdoors after sunset. On frosty days, the rangefinder is used only after adaptation to cold air. Even models that are resistant to water are best kept away from it.
Dust should not be allowed to accumulate on the case. It is best to use a laser tape measure in warm, well-lit rooms. If there are recesses or niches in the wall to be measured, additional measurements should be made with a tape measure (the range finder can accurately determine only straight distances).
It is undesirable to take measurements on the street when there is a thick fog. In windy weather, do not work outdoors without a tripod.
