Sweet cherry is a fruit crop that grows in almost every garden. One of the most popular and unpretentious in care is the Rechitsa variety with an average ripening period, which is easy to grow, knowing the basic rules.
Breeding history
Sweet cherry Rechitsa was bred at the All-Russian Research Institute of Lupine in 1993. The author of the variety is the famous Russian breeder M.V. Kanshina. When creating this fruit and stone fruit variety by free pollination, the sweet cherry variety Bryanskaya pink was used. Information about the obtained variety was entered in the State Register of the Russian Federation in 2001. Recommended for growing sweet cherries in the Central Region.
Description of the variety
Rechitsa is a medium-sized tree, endowed with a pyramidal crown with a moderate thickening of bright green foliage, thickened upright shoots of olive-yellow color and a developed root system. Buds are ovoid and oval of medium size, strongly deviated from the shoots. In favorable conditions, the fast-growing sweet cherry reaches a height of 3 meters.
The tree blooms in medium terms - in mid-May. At this time, the crown becomes very beautiful, covered with snow-white flowers with yellow blotches, collected 2-3 pieces per inflorescence. Ovaries are formed on bouquet twigs.
Fruit characteristics
This variety is a large-fruited class. The average weight of the berry ranges from 4.9-5.8 grams. Cherries have a regular rounded shape with a smooth glossy surface. It is characteristic that cherries grow one-dimensional, which makes them attractive and marketable. The skin of the fruit is thin, not tough, but firm. Ripe sweet cherries are dark cherry, almost black, without splashes. The berries grow in bunches, which facilitates the harvesting process.
The berry comes off well from the elongated stalk, without pulp, so the cherry easily tolerates transportation and can be stored for some time in a cool place without losing its taste. Cherry has a universal purpose - it is eaten fresh, processed, compotes are boiled, frozen and used in cooking.
Taste qualities
Rechitsa is characterized by excellent taste, which undoubtedly captivates many housewives. The dark red pulp of moderate density has a delicate, fleshy and very juicy consistency, complemented by a pleasant aroma. The taste is dominated by rich sweetness without cloying. Dark cherry juice has a rich and thick structure. The pit is medium in size and easily separates from the cherry pulp. The pulp contains 13% sugars and less than 1% acids.
Ripening and fruiting
The dark-fruited sweet cherry is endowed with an average ripening period. The tree begins to bear fruit in the 5th year after planting. Fruiting of the variety is annual. Cherries spice together, while they can hang on a tree for 7-10 days without crumbling, without baking in the sun, but it is not recommended to overexpose the berries, since they attract birds. The phase of active fruiting occurs in the second half of July - 15-20 days.
Yield
High-yielding variety. Providing the tree with proper care, you can count on 30 kg of ripe berries per season. Growing a crop on an industrial scale, you can count on yields within the average 82 and maximum 146 centners / ha.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
Sweet cherry is self-fertile, so there is a need to plant donor trees with similar flowering times. The most productive pollinating trees are: Iput, Odritsa and Ovstuzhenka. The distance between trees should be 3-4 meters. In addition, it is recommended to plant honey-bearing herbs near the cherries that attract insects.
Growing and care
It is recommended to plant seedlings in the spring - 3-4 days after the soil thaws. The seedling must be dormant. The best planting material is considered to be one- or two-year-old seedlings with a healthy root system and a height of at least 1 meter. It is better to plant cherries next to cherries, honeysuckle and plums.
The site is chosen bright, illuminated by the sun and protected from northern winds. It is optimal if the tree is planted on a small hill, in order to avoid waterlogging and excessive moisture in the soil.
Agrotechnics of sweet cherries Rechitsa consists of a series of activities - regular watering, weeding, loosening the soil, applying fertilizers three times per season, forming a crown, pruning dry and damaged branches, mulching using humus or compost, preventing diseases and preparing for winter. In regions with cold winters, a sacking or agrofibre cover is recommended.
Disease and pest resistance
Good immunity makes the tree resistant to many fungal and standard diseases of sweet cherry, in particular, to coccomycosis. During periods of cold snaps and high humidity, cherries can undergo blackening of the foliage and the formation of rotten ulcers on the fruits. Among the insects that attack cherries, the most annoying are aphids and weevils.
Requirements for soil and climatic conditions
Sweet cherry Rechitsa is winter-hardy, tolerates prolonged heat well, but reacts negatively to drought, therefore irrigation is an important component of crop farming.
It is comfortable for a cherry tree to grow on loamy, chernozem and sandy loam soils that breathe, allow moisture to pass through, and have a loose structure. It is important that the groundwater table is deep, since stagnant moisture can lead to decay of the root system of the tree. It is also worth remembering that the variety does not tolerate acidic soil, so the soil should be with low or neutral acidity. Dolomite flour will help to lower the acidity of the soil.
