Beech is a unique tree that has no analogues in the whole world. The wood of this plant is appreciated in all parts of our planet. The beech has several varieties, one of the most interesting is Eastern or Caucasian.

Description

The Caucasus is considered the birthplace of the distribution of eastern beech. At this point in the world, the plant forms beech and mixed deciduous forests. Besides, the culture grows in the Crimea, it can often be found in the gorge, on the banks of the river, on the slopes of the mountains, rather rarely in the flat areas. In the subalpine region, the breed is represented by a multi-stemmed low tree with a curved trunk.

Caucasian beech is a powerful thermophilic flora. Its height can reach 30-50 meters, while the trunk diameter is about 2 meters.

This tree has an ovoid or cylindrical dense wide crown. Beech bark is smooth and thin. A distinctive feature of the plant is considered to be a gray-ash smooth trunk.

The foliage of the tree is alternate, petiolate with an oval shape and a pointed end. The petiole is pubescent, its length cannot exceed 2 cm. The length of the leaf usually reaches 7-20 cm, the stipules have a reddish tint. Foliage falls early.

The Caucasian beech has small nondescript flowers. They are often unisexual, but there are cases of bisexual specimens. The culture blooms in April, at the same time leaves appear on it. The wide bell-shaped perianth has no more than 6 elliptical leaflets.

The value of the oriental beech lies in its fruits, which ripen in mid-September and early October. The fruit of this culture has a triangular structure, it is smooth, sharp-ribbed, one-seeded nut of brown color. It weighs 0.2 grams and reaches 2.2 cm in length. From one adult crop, approximately 90,000 fruits can be harvested annually.

Growing

Oriental beech is not characterized by rapid growth, however, it grows in size much faster with age. Since the crown of the tree forms a large shadow, it is not recommended to plant light-loving representatives near it. Beech is inherent in shade-loving, lack of exactingness to soil moisture and its fertility. The optimal place for growing crops is podzolized acidic loams. This tree needs moist air and no spring frosts.

Experts recommend insulating the trunk for the winter season. You need to cut the tree in the spring, thus the gardener will be able to make an attractive crown shape. In addition, old and broken beech branches should be regularly removed. When a culture becomes an adult, it will no longer need the above procedures.

A young individual should be watered once every 7 days, and an adult much less often. Dust and vermin will be washed off the tree during the spraying process. After irrigation, it is recommended to loosen the beech tree trunk circle. In order for the plant not to suffer from diseases and pest attacks, it should be regularly treated with special substances.

The oriental beech is propagated by shoots, cuttings. And also it can be planted with seeds, but only in the spring.

Applications

Caucasian beech belongs to ornamental crops, therefore it is often used to create living green hedges and walls. It is often used by landscape designers to decorate the territory, since the plant looks great with deciduous and coniferous trees. This representative of the flora is able to get along with common spruce, fir, Weymouth pine, birch, white fir, juniper, mountain ash.

With the help of dry distillation, creosote is made from oriental beech. This biologically active substance has well-expressed anti-inflammatory, disinfecting and antiseptic properties. For this reason, the substance is often used in folk and traditional medicine in the treatment of ulcers, wounds and respiratory diseases. Methyl alcohol, vinegar, acetone are obtained from this tree.

Beech wood has unique properties, which is why it has found its application in furniture production.

The material is used in the production of barrel riveting, parquet. In addition, beech is an excellent base for sleepers, roofing shingles. The plasticity of wood makes it possible to produce musical instruments, knife handles and weapon butts from it.

Beech nuts are used for the production of flour, which is indispensable for baking a special type of cakes. In addition, the fruits of this crop serve as a nutritious food base for forest animals, for example, wild boars. Oil is also produced from nuts, which is no worse in quality than olive oil. They can be used to dress salads and add to first courses. The cake after oil is used to prepare a surrogate coffee drink.
