All about the box beam
A wide variety of building materials are used during renovation work. For external and external decoration, wooden beams are often used. Currently, there are a large number of different models of such material. Today we will talk about the features of the box beam.
Features and purpose
The timber for construction is a versatile lumber. Often it is used not only for the creation of wooden log cabins for houses, but also for the formation of interior decoration (first of all, for the installation of doors and window frames).
This type of timber will be an excellent basis for any type of windows and doors, it is installed in the appropriate openings. The ease and tightness of closing largely depends on its quality and reliability. In addition, it also affects the durability of structures. We can also say that such a box acts as an intermediate structure when installing windows and doors.
The timber during the manufacture must necessarily be covered with protective compounds that will extend its service life.
Type overview
Such a box is most often made from various conifers. The most common options are solid pine models. Such options are considered incredibly strong, reliable and durable. Specimens made from larch are less common.
Separately, it is worth highlighting the telescopic version of the box beam. It differs from standard models by the presence of special grooves. They are intended in order to simplify as much as possible the process of installing a door or window structure and installing a casing. Often this type is also called Euroblock, compensation or expansion box. No nails are needed to install the telescopic structure. They are also considered to be more durable.
These models have a more attractive appearance, they do not need additional masking of fasteners.
Such a box perfectly bridges the gaps between the frame and the wall covering. It is quite simple to mount telescopic structures. Almost anyone can handle the assembly. In order to install a telescopic-type product, mid (the frame is assembled from them), the upper part is applied to the ends of the upper racks, after which cuts are made.
Later, they do the fastening of the racks and the narthex. The assembled structure is placed in the doorway. It is fixed with wedges. After that, you need to accurately measure the diagonals, verticals and horizontals to make sure that the frame is installed correctly. Next, the finished structure is fixed. For this, it is better to use special anchor bolts. At the end, they hang the canvas and hide it all with platbands.
Section views and dimensions
Box beams can be made with different types of section. But the L-shape is the standard option. Such samples are used for mounting vertical parts of a wooden box. The door hinges are later attached to the wider side of the board. Also in hardware stores you can see models with an I-shape: such elements are taken to install the horizontal part.
The dimensions of the box beam can vary considerably.
The section can be 30x70, 40x85, 26x70 millimeters, there are models with other designations. The length of products most often reaches 1050 or 2100 millimeters. If necessary, in a specialized store, you can easily find goods with non-standard sizes.
To assemble a door structure, which includes several constituent parts, it is necessary to know the exact length and width of the wall, in the opening of which the installation will be carried out. Experts recommend observing certain size ratios. So, if the thickness of the brick wall is 75 millimeters, then the optimal width of the timber should reach 108 millimeters. If you are going to install the structure in a wooden wall covering, the thickness of which is 100 mm, then in this case it is better to purchase a box 120 mm wide.
All of the above dimensions will be in accordance with the established standards. Compliance with the dimensional ratios allows you to avoid problems with the installation of the structure in the future. If the thickness of the wall covering is much greater in comparison with the width of the box beam, then the material will have to be increased with the help of special additional elements. If the box does not fit in its dimensions, the width of the door or window opening and the thickness of the wall, then it will be replaced with a draft version. It is formed from beams or boards with additional fit.
Varieties
Currently, there are several main types of wood from which boxes can be made. All of them differ from each other in their qualitative main characteristics.
The following varieties can be distinguished separately.
- "A". This type can be produced with small intergrown healthy knots on the surface. Small chips and defects that arose during the manufacture of lumber are also allowed. This variety belongs to the middle price category.
- Extra. This type of wood is considered the most reliable and high quality. It should be performed without small chips, irregularities and other defects. Typically, this material is spliced.
- "AB". The variety allows the presence of irregularities on the product, which was obtained by splicing.
For finishing work, it is better to purchase a bar made from the Extra variety.
But other varieties can be used as well. Almost any building paint or decorative panel will be able to cover small imperfections.
Nevertheless, Extra variety has a more beautiful and neat appearance. The cost of such products will be slightly higher compared to the other two options. If you want to decorate the opening in an interesting way, then preference can be given to laminated or veneered products.
Decorating
When decorating, most of the box will be hidden by the platbands. But here the open part can be interestingly decorated. Sometimes the structure is finished with laminate or veneer. If desired, the surface can be coated with special decorative pigments.
Price
The price for such material can vary significantly depending on the size, type of wood, quality of lumber. The cheapest models will cost 30-40 rubles per running meter. On average, the price for a box beam will be 50-100 rubles per meter. Laminated timber will be more expensive (from 100 rubles per meter), as well as a box made of a natural oak base.
