Features of planed timber and its comparison with edged timber
When choosing a material for construction or making furniture, many are asking the question - which is the best fit? After all, not only a pleasant price is required, but also good qualities - durability, convenience, ease of processing, attractive appearance. Let's take a look at the features of a planed bar and compare it with an edged bar.
What it is?
Sliced timber - a type of specially dried timber, processed on each side (there are four of them) and carefully sanded... To obtain this shape, the timber is processed on high quality woodworking equipment. For the manufacture of planed timber, not only deciduous species of wood (linden or alder) are suitable, but also conifers - larch, pine, cedar, spruce, etc. Each of the species has its own pros and cons.
Planed timber can look different - be sanded and flat on the inside, have a flat or convex outside. On the side ribs, grooves and spikes can be cut for joining the bars. The appearance is directly related to the purpose of the lumber. After the lumber is given the shape of a bar, it is sent for drying - to special drying chambers.
The maximum allowable residual moisture content of wood is 20%, or better - less. Drying in the chamber is much faster and more efficient than the natural method. Drying - one of the integral stages of wood processing, it cannot be skipped. Otherwise, the finished buildings will shrink strongly due to drying out and crack. Planed boards have the following features:
- do not change shape during operation;
- have high geometric accuracy;
- energy efficient, since wood retains heat well;
- environmentally friendly, natural;
- have a long service life;
- aesthetically attractive;
- the material is available, in comparison with brick and stone, it is budgetary;
- convenient and easy to handle;
- do not need finishing work;
- wood is good air permeable, "breathes";
- does not sit down.
The cost of planed timber can be quite high, however, this price is justified due to its attractive appearance and excellent operational properties.... Any structure made of bars is erected quickly. This is because the lumber is lightweight, comfortable, it does not need any special processing, it can be used as a finishing one. A planed board can have different lengths and sections. And, of course, it (like any wood used in construction work) needs to be treated with antiseptic and fire retardant compounds.
Where is it used?
To date, there is no substitute for this special material. Especially if conifers with natural impregnation from natural resin of natural drying are used for it. This bar is suitable for everything - both for the frame and for buildings. If the timber was dried in the chamber, then it is used in various types of furniture, stairs and railings, and other wooden products.
The most durable is a planed board, for which larch was used.
The planed board serves as a "raw material" for the construction of the frames of houses, country cottages, baths, gazebos, etc. It is also indispensable for supporting structures, battens, ceilings, props, logs. The terrace, staircase and facade will turn out from such material just like a fence.But you should not limit the scope of the planed timber to construction only. It is also actively used in decor - to create railings, beams, window sills, platbands, columns and other interior solutions.
Dry planed board is an excellent material for the production of furniture, for example, kitchen, it can also be used to create doors or partitions between rooms. When choosing a material, you should pay attention to the quality of its drying, processing and storage conditions.
Contact of wood with moisture, dirt, the presence of mold, mildew, and other lesions on the lumber is unacceptable.
Types and sizes
The most common planed timber sizes are 150x150, 100x100, 150x100 and 50x50. Standard size 150x150 is used for the construction of external walls, low-rise residential buildings, baths, house buildings. Such sawn timber has a very high mechanical strength and good thermal insulation properties due to the large thickness and the ability of the wood to retain heat. Due to these properties, the material is also used in basement and intermediate floors in the form of beams.
The use of 100x100 timber mainly occurs in construction work - to create roof beams, rafters, frame elements, and other structures. External walls from such a bar are rarely erected, since they turn out to be thin, poorly retaining heat.
For a room that does not need heating, for example, a cold warehouse, such a bar is suitable.
Sliced timber 150x100 is a cross between the first and the second. Walls and wells of buildings, internal partitions, ceilings are erected from such lumber, and also used in the automotive industry, etc. Standard size 50x50 is good when used in a crate to fix the sheathing on it. It is also used to create frame elements in small architectural forms. Such a bar is budgetary and practical.
As for the types, the timber can be hand-planed and milled.... Milled means machined. It is much more expensive than planed one due to automatic processing and absolutely identical dimensions of each bar in a batch. Also, the timber can be chamfered - this will allow the lumber to be laid as tightly as possible in the structure and to avoid the appearance of cracks and cracks, which means a draft. Self-service chamfering requires considerable experience, as well as the availability of special equipment.
Therefore, it is better for a beginner to purchase a bar already with a chamfer.
What is the difference from edged timber?
The difference between planed and edged beams is obvious to anyone who understands the issue at least a little. At the procurement stage, differences already appear. A whole piece of wood is used for edged timber, and in order to get a planed one, additional drying of the wood is required in a specially equipped room. There are no differences in properties such as thermal conductivity and air tightness between the two listed types of timber.
But in terms of wear resistance, planed has a difference from non-planed - due to drying, it retains operational properties longer.
