Machines and equipment for rounding logs
The rounded logs are identical in size and perfect surface. Usually larch or pine needles are used for manufacturing. The most demanded is pine. The logs are processed on special machines, as a result of which the edges are smooth, and the trunks are identical in shape and radius. The laying of the material takes less time and effort, the building looks more refined and elegant.
What kind of equipment is there?
Log rounding machines allow you to modify the material in just one processing cycle. This equipment is quite serious and expensive, it is used in production. Novice craftsmen often use homemade woodworking machines. This is also quite convenient in cases where the logs are harvested only for personal needs. These types of machines are used.
Turning
The part heals and moves axially, the cutter processes the surface along the entire length... The shape is perfectly flat. You can work with a large diameter. Decorative processing is available. Lathes must be constantly monitored so that the diameter does not go astray. The process is rather slow, however, this is enough for personal purposes.
Additional grinding of the finished log will be required.
Rotary lathe
The log is located in the clamp, the router moves around the material. The installed ring makes it possible to obtain a finished product of a certain diameter. The processing is of high quality, the machine does not allow distortions. The equipment is quite energy intensive and slow. It requires constant monitoring and good reinforcement. Otherwise, large vibrations are generated - this could create a hazardous situation for the operator.... Each machine is installed in a separate room. This is necessary for ease of maintenance, as well as for the shipment of the finished log.
Checkpoint
It is used to decorate raw materials with a small diameter, no more than 24 cm. The cutters are fixed and do not move, the workbench feeds the workpiece. The rotary machine allows you to move the material continuously. Clamps are not used, the movement is carried out by a roller mechanism. The result is a neat material with high-quality grinding.
This machine allows you to make logs up to 6 m long. True, in this case, a slight curvature can be observed. Among the disadvantages, there is an uneven laying groove and an arbitrary change in the compensation kerf width.
It should be noted that constant monitoring and periodic adjustment allow you to get rid of equipment shortcomings.
Positional
Turning equipment belongs to cyclic. In this type, the log moves while the cutter remains stationary. The material is fixed in the center of the machine. Then the log moves straight thanks to the internal guides. A spindle is used as a cutting tool.
How to choose a machine?
It is worth considering all the nuances before making a purchase of rather expensive equipment. The machine can be mechanized or automated. In the first case, the operator must independently load and retrieve the log, set up and adjust the operation of the equipment. It is important to control all stages of processing.
In an automated machine, the role of the operator is less. It is enough just to follow the process. There is also a semi-automatic cylindering machine. In this case, the master is included in the process after the machine has carried out each processing cycle.
Electrical equipment can only operate without interruption if there is an additional power source or reliable power lines. The petrol model will be an alternative. It is absolutely independent of external factors.
However, such a machine requires regular refueling.
You should also decide which type is more suitable. Pass-through equipment milling type provides high productivity, but processing quality may suffer. Most of the models cannot provide the required grinding. Cyclic machines have lower productivity, but higher quality. They are compact and sturdy and can handle a full range of operations.
The cost of the equipment depends on the manufacturer. Today there are a large number of models that fit different budgets. The full cycle is quite important for the professional production of rounded logs. In this case, you should pay attention to models such as "Cedar", "Terem", "Taiga" and "Termite".
If you buy a partial cycle model, you will also need a miter saw.
How to round a log at home?
You can make such lumber yourself. Some of the processes are done by hand, such as grinding and finishing. For others, a homemade machine will come in handy. Assembling equipment requires experience and knowledge. You should understand the principle of operation and the importance of each individual node.
Self-made machines are cheaper, but with proper assembly, they are no worse in quality than purchased ones. It is only important to make them according to all the rules so as not to risk your health and life. In the best case, the owner of improperly assembled equipment simply will not receive a high-quality log at the exit.
The basic requirements are as follows.
- Large bed over 1 tonne. Otherwise, vibrations will appear and the log may fly off.
- Plenty of space to stack and move canvases. The area can be compensated by a rotary mechanism.
- The site must be concreted in accordance with all safety requirements. Consideration should be given to cushioning, formwork, casting and reinforcement. The platform is aged for at least 3 weeks. Equipment on the ground behaves unpredictably. There is a risk of a dangerous situation.
- The finished machine is checked by balancing the cutting part. Otherwise, all equipment may break down, or the log itself may deteriorate.
- Only high quality ingredients can be used. It is especially important to choose cutters or knives. Otherwise, the machine will not be able to cope with the processing.
When making rounded logs with your own hands a certain order of actions should be followed... First, the material is procured and dried. Only then can processing be carried out. The machine itself requires preparation. The adjustment is made based on the diameter of the log, you should also check the operability of all elements.
Blank
Only those logs that have minimal curvature are used. Diameter and conditional strength are also important. Defective workpieces are not suitable for cylindering. Northern timber is distinguished by its special quality and density.... Do not use trees that grow in wetlands. They can curl over time. Such wood with a high percentage of moisture dries out too much.
In some situations, log rotting is observed at all.
Drying
Most of the logs are dried naturally. This process takes a long time, about 2-3 years. Alternatively, a convection chamber is used, but this is only possible in an industrial environment.... Drying will take about 1.5-2 months.
Compensation grooves prevent wood cracking during moisture loss. If you start construction with wet material, then the structure itself will then settle by about 20-30 cm. This should not be allowed, especially in cases where the logs are harvested for personal purposes.
It is better to dry wood in an atmospheric way.
Cylindering
Each log is processed on the machine. Moreover, it is important to adjust the equipment to a certain diameter.... Technical standards allow for differences of no more than 2-4 mm. Cut out the moon groove and the compensation cut. The latter relieves stress from the fibers, avoiding cracks and shrinkage after assembly of the structure. The cut should be made along the surface with an even groove about 8-10 mm thick and ¼ deep.
You need to lay the finished logs with grooves upwards so that moisture does not get in.
Trimming
The logs need to be split. A cross-cut machine will help to cope with this task. You can also cut by hand with a saw. Grooves and spikes should be made at the ends.... This will increase the length, make openings for windows and doors.
Cups are cut for the selected project. Such an element of the transverse fastening provides a reliable fixation of the rounded logs. Cups can be made on a special machine. The same option is available in full cycle equipment.
When self-cutting, a laser level and a precision instrument are required.
Treatment
Wood is a living material. It is highly susceptible to external factors and pests. It can be saved only if treated with special protective compounds. Categories of products for rounded logs can be as follows.
Antiseptic drugs
Substances are usually found in the composition of impregnations. Used to protect against beetles, mold, fungus. For pre-treatment, weak solutions are used, concentrates for treatment. Well-known manufacturers: Belinka, Neomid.
Transport antiseptics
They are used immediately after facing. Provide protection against mold and decay for six months. Other protective and decorative compounds can be applied on top. Manufacturers: OgneBioZashchita and Neomid are especially popular.
Fire retardants are included in the composition of fire retardants, which allow the material not to catch fire for several hours
Products of factories "NORT", "Rogneda" shows the best result. The house can stand for some time even under the influence of an open fire.
Moisture-proof compounds
A waterproofing film forms on the surface of the log, which closes the pores. As a result, the material does not get wet and does not rot. Products from NEO + and Biofa are especially effective.
Complex preparations
Universal means of a full range of protection. These are produced by companies "Rogneda" and "FireBioProtection". They are able to save the log of all threats.
The instructions for each composition indicate the features of the application. You can treat the log with a transport antiseptic solution immediately after the end of the last processing cycle. The rest of the compositions are usually applied after the assembly of the log house and the sealing of the seams. In this case, processing is carried out only for those logs that have a moisture level of no more than 25%. A moisture meter is used for control.
For processing at home, you should first sand the surface from darkened wood, remnants of bark and dust. A broom and a brush with stiff bristles, a household vacuum cleaner are used. You will also need a brush or roller, spray to apply the composition. In production, an autoclave is often used.
Processing is carried out only in a protective suit, an additional mask is required... The composition is thoroughly shaken or stirred before application. The processing conditions are also important. The air temperature must be at least + 5 ° C, no direct sunlight. Frozen rounded logs must not be processed.
