If your dacha farm has a container in which there was previously vegetable or industrial oil, then after cleaning, such a container can be used to collect irrigation water and organize a summer shower. We have collected the most effective ways to clean a metal tank from an oil film and wash a plastic container from chemical residues.

How to clean a barrel of machine oil?

Techniques for cleaning tanks from machine oil depend on the nature of the contamination of the tank and the characteristics of the material from which they are made. We draw your attention to the fact that any technique is a danger to life and requires compliance with safety rules.

Metal

If the walls of the metal barrel are covered with oil, do not rush to throw it away. Such containers can be saved and used later for economic purposes. Of course, it is unlikely that it will be possible to store drinking water in them, but it is quite possible to create a reserve for watering the site or household needs.

The maximum effect is obtained by cleaning a metal container using steaming and subsequent rinsing. A similar method is applied to two-hundred-liter barrels and other large tanks.

To do this, a pair of supports are built from bricks, a container is installed on them, filled with water to the brim and a fire is kindled under the tank. The water should boil for at least 30 minutes, preferably with a lid on the barrel. During this time, the oil will "move away" from the walls and mix with water. After that, all that remains is to extinguish the fire, wait for the tank to cool down, and drain all the dirty water. If the result does not suit you, then the treatment can be repeated - usually, for high-quality cleaning of the tank, you have to flush at least 2-3 times.

Another way is to sprinkle the soiled barrel with river sand and wait until the oil is absorbed into it. After that, the tank is washed with water using any dish cleaning agent.

Many summer residents use firing from the inside. This is a very effective technique for cleaning an iron barrel, but extreme care should be taken when using it. The oil is highly flammable, so such manipulations can only be carried out in calm dry weather, away from trees and outbuildings made of wood.

To clean the container, it is necessary to place firewood and dry branches inside the tank, and then set it on fire and cover it halfway with a lid (you cannot completely close it, otherwise the combustion will stop in the absence of oxygen).

In the fire, all traces of lubricants will be destroyed. Be careful not to spread the flame, keep a supply of water ready for extinguishing in case of fire.

After all the contents of the container have burned out, it must be cooled, and then walk over the surface with a metal brush to destroy the remaining dirt. As a result, you will receive a cleaned metal container, but without a protective coating - such material will rust on contact with water.

To prevent the appearance of corrosion, 1 kg of cement is mixed with 500 ml of milk, the entire inner surface of the container is smeared with the resulting mixture and left to dry for 2-3 days. In this type, the tank can be used on the farm, if desired, any water-dispersion enamel can be applied on top of the mixture. The method is suitable for tanks with a capacity of 200 liters or more.

Important: it is not recommended to store water intended for drinking and performing hygiene measures in such a barrel.

Modern industry produces a wide range of special formulations that allow you to wash oily tanks.

  • UPTS-2002 - this substance degreases tanks well and neutralizes all oil residues at temperatures from 25 to 55 degrees. It can dissolve grease, as well as oil and some other fuels and lubricants.
  • SOFEX-TMS-2001 - is available in a wide variety of brands for cleaning metal containers. Composition of “B” grade works best against machine oil and other residues of petroleum products.
  • High efficiency is provided by caustic soda. It has the property of corroding any organic and inorganic substances. You need to act with extreme caution, since the increased concentration of caustic destroys the protective coating of the metal.
  • Improved quality of cleaning metal containers from waste oil gives kerosene and white spirit - you can buy them in every building supermarket. First, turn the barrel over so that any remaining oil flows down, and then walk over the surface with any of the solvents listed. Keep in mind that after such cleaning, the container must be rid of the characteristic chemical odor. To do this, rinse it under the pressure of water with a cleaning solution and leave it in the fresh air for ventilation.
  • Gasoline helps against engine oil. It must be diluted with liquid soap and applied to the walls of the tank for 2-3 hours. After that, the barrel is rinsed with water and wiped with a sponge sprinkled with baking soda. After 15 minutes, the container is washed again under high pressure of water.
  • In the fight against oil bloom, a mixture of magnesia in powder with ether has proven itself well. The components are mixed until a thick slurry is formed and gently rubbed into the surface of the container.
  • Alternatively, you can use ammonia, it copes with transformer oil no worse than gasoline. To treat the surface of the barrel, the ammonia solution is mixed with hot water in a 1 to 1 ratio, applied to the surface and left for a quarter of an hour. However, this method only works in the case of fresh contamination. If the oil is old, it is best to use gasoline or other solvents.

Plastic

Care should be taken when cleaning plastic surfaces - many caustic solutions can destroy the structure of the plastic, cause deformation and lead to holes. This will make the drive unusable for further home use.

It is best to use dishwashing detergent - it is the cheapest, most affordable, and at the same time effective cleaning method.

The barrel is filled to the brim with hot water and the detergent is added. The tank should stand for a while, after which all the dirty water is drained and the treatment is repeated until the walls are completely free of plaque. The composition should be washed off with plenty of water.

Household chemicals quickly deal with any type of fat. However, when working with plastic, cleaning agents for stoves, ovens, grills cannot be used. They contain aggressive acid-base components that can damage plastic.

A good result can be achieved by using sawdust. Loose material is poured into the tank and left for 3-5 hours so that they completely absorb the remaining oil. Then the dirty material is thrown away, and the tank is washed with water using household chemicals.

Instead of sand, you can use newspapers or any other paper - it also absorbs fatty substances well. And as a cleaning agent, 72% laundry soap or washing powder will do.

Mustard works well with vegetable oil. A small amount of dry powder is mixed with cool water to form a slurry and applied with the abrasive side of a sponge to the contaminated surface. After drying, the mustard is cleaned off with a soft brush and the barrel is rinsed under the pressure of water with any cleaning agent.

Baking soda has a good effect. By its nature, it is alkali, therefore it breaks down fat, and in addition, it absorbs excess oil. Soda is diluted with water to a thick slurry and rubbed thoroughly with a stiff brush for several minutes. The gruel must dry completely, after which it is washed off.

As an alternative to soda, you can take tooth powder - it contains chalk, which has the property of absorbing a variety of substances, including oil.

The most radical method for removing residual machine grease is to paint the barrel. Before processing, wipe the container with a soft cloth or rag so that they can absorb some of the grease. For staining, take a simple enamel; manipulations can be performed with a spray gun or with an ordinary brush.

How to clean a barrel of vegetable oil?

Getting rid of sunflower, linseed, or palm oil is difficult. But after processing, the drive can be used to collect drinking water and bulk food.

The easiest way is to simply leave the container in direct UV light for 3-5 weeks. During this period, the vegetable oil will completely oxidize, and you just have to thoroughly rinse the tank with any cleaning agent.

A mixture of table vinegar and baking soda, taken in equal proportions, is highly effective. A few drops of cleaning agent are added to them and very quickly, while the reaction is taking place, they are applied to the surface of the tank. The composition is left for a few minutes and then washed with plenty of water.

Fine table salt is considered an ancient method of getting rid of oil contamination. Table salt absorbs oil components well; fresh dirt can dissolve in just a few minutes. Moreover, the finer the grinding, the more effective the result will be.

Alternatively, wipe the walls of the soiled tank with half a lemon sprinkled with table salt on top. Such cleaning will take very little time and energy from you.

Vegetable oil can be easily removed from the surface of the tanks using starch. The mass should not be diluted too thin, it should have the consistency of sour cream. The solution is applied to the surface of the tank and left to dry. As soon as the color of the starch begins to change - the gruel is brushed off with a brush, the barrel should then be thoroughly washed with water.

Methods for Removing Other Oil Compounds

If the barrel is stained with vaseline oil, diesel fuel, or gasoline, you can use one of the following methods to clean it.

  • You can get rid of diesel fuel with a concentrated solution of laundry soap with further washing. Of course, such a container is not suitable for the accumulation of drinking water, but it will be just right for creating compost.
  • Engine oil can be washed off the surface with acetone. It is left for 25-30 minutes and then washed with water. This method is most effective when dealing with fresh dirt.
  • The hydraulic and transformer oils are wiped off with a cloth soaked in gasoline.
  • If the tank is small, then to neutralize the used car oil, you can take toothpaste - it is distributed along the walls until it dries completely, and then the residues of the oily substance are removed with water.

There are many ways to get rid of oil stains. However, some of them should be treated with great caution. This primarily concerns bleaches. They are often used to remove vegetable oils from clothing. But the fact is that their function does not include the decomposition or dissolution of fat.

The chlorine or oxygen contained in them only oxidizes individual components and transforms them into a soluble state - fat does not belong to these substances.

On the contrary, during oxidation, any oil hardens and, after drying, gives a persistent coating, which will be difficult or even impossible to get rid of.

The same applies fully to the removal of oil with hot water. In most cases, the heated oil will only spread further over the surface of the tank and the volume of contamination will increase.

Avoid using plumbing cleaners. They contain aggressive components that can damage the structure of the material. Often, after processing, barrels become unsuitable for any kind of use.

One of the listed methods should certainly help to wash the tank of oil residues. Alternatively, you can use active foam, which is available in all car washes. A good effect is also given by car shampoo diluted at the rate of 1 cap per 5 liters of water.

When cleaning the container, be sure to protect your eyes and wear protective gloves. If cleaning agents come into contact with mucous membranes and skin, burns may occur. In addition, cleaning your hands from machine oil is far from always possible with ordinary soap.
