When roofing, you need to know how long the bituminous primer dries. Drying times may vary depending on circumstances. But sometimes you have to figure out why it dries for a long time, and what to do in such a situation.

Why is it needed?

Before figuring out how long a bituminous primer takes to dry, you need to step back a little. That is, find out the purpose of using the substance. A number of houses are equipped with flat rather than pitched roofs. But such a scheme, despite its convenience, complicates sealing. And the additional primer formulations are not water soluble.

That is, when precipitation falls, they will not let the liquid pass. In addition to petroleum bitumen, kerosene or white spirit-based solvents are added to the primers. Work with the composition is possible over a wide temperature range.

Drying time is of course very important. It tells how soon it will be possible to start subsequent work.

How long should the preparation dry?

All manufacturers indicate how long the primer should take to work. So, in most cases, the average drying time for Proof bitumen primers is a maximum of 12 hours. But it also depends on the specific composition, and on what the external conditions are. The situation is different for TechnoNIKOL products:

  • model №01 will be ready in a maximum of 12 hours;

  • bitumen emulsion primer №04 will come to the desired state in 60 minutes after application;

  • finally, a fast-drying bitumen-polymer reagent №03 will keep you waiting for a maximum of 15 minutes.

What to do if a primer is not performing well?

Usually, having applied bituminous mixtures to the roof, you can just wait a short time - and proceed to further work. But specific conditions often have a profound effect on chemical processes. How long mastics and primers take to dry depends on:

  • the thickness of the layer used;

  • average air temperature;

  • temperature fluctuations;

  • saturation of air with water vapor;

  • insolation level;

  • type of treated surfaces.

But sometimes it is very difficult and even impossible to wait. It is important to know what to do so that the primer dries sooner.... It is recommended to start with application with notched trowels. Furrows increase the total surface area. Therefore, evaporation is more active without deteriorating the surface quality.

When the drug is used, you need to monitor the safety of the applied layer. And you will also have to protect it from additional moisture.

These simple requirements guarantee uniform drying without fluctuations in thickness. Heaters and heat guns are very useful indoors. But then we must remember about fire safety and protection from bituminous vapors.

Of course, in order for the primer to dry sooner, you will have to immediately choose the appropriate preparation. Even so, specific instances may behave differently. The freshest mixtures should be preferred whenever possible. And it is very important to store the drug correctly. Otherwise, it easily loses its properties.
