You have to make a bituminous primer with your own hands quite often. You need to know how to prepare it from bitumen with diesel fuel yourself, by what technology. You will have to take into account the composition of the primer and get acquainted with the main methods of its preparation.

Composition

The term "bituminous primer" itself is by no means new. Its builders and repairmen have known for a long time. One of the products of oil refining is sold under this name. In addition to bitumen, the mixture includes organic compounds, mainly alcohols. The introduction of kerosene, as well as white spirit, is practiced.

Bituminous primer is a primer with a uniform consistency. Therefore, all components are selected and mixed so that they combine as best as possible. In addition to these, other components can be added. Their introduction is due to a specific technical need.

The primer is mainly used for waterproofing, and in order to save money, you need to make it right at home.

Fast cooking method

Sometimes it is necessary to prepare a primer mix with your own hands in a short time. For example, when construction or repairs are already in full swing, and the reagent is needed urgently to carry out the work accurately. In this case, a method known as "cooking" is used. But any "cooking" means well-chosen components. In this case, they are:

  • actual bitumen;
  • diesel fuel;
  • in some cases - gasoline (they replace diesel fuel, and do not supplement it, this is very important).

The specific formulation is determined by the purpose for which the primer is being prepared. If you need to apply it to metal, then 1 part of bitumen is combined with 3 parts of fuel. But when processing concrete, a different proportion is required for "fast" cooking. Then they use 1 part of resin and 2 parts of fuel, and it is not difficult to guess what this is connected with. While waterproofing can only drain from metal, it also absorbs into concrete, and therefore the balance is shifted in favor of a more inert component.

Heating methods are chosen at your discretion. Whichever source of heat is available is the one to be used. At home, blowtorches are often used. In dachas and in private suburban areas, cooking on a fire is widespread. In some cases, even a kerosene lamp will do.

Of course, you need to cook bitumen, not gasoline or diesel fuel. It is necessary to ensure that all the resin is melted, in its entirety. An ordinary wooden stick helps to control this process, as well as to mix lumps and hot liquid. As soon as the resin begins to boil and bubble, it should be carefully, gradually poured into a tank with diesel fuel or gasoline (in no case should you do the opposite); the mixture should be thoroughly mixed.

How else can you make a bituminous primer?

You can prepare a primer from bitumen with diesel fuel yourself and using a longer technology. She is chosen when there is enough time to work. You will have to wait 7-12 days. They take a special clean and dry container, into which gasoline is poured in and small pieces of bitumen are put in (strictly in this order; small pieces are taken so that they react faster). The proportions are carefully calculated so as not to confuse anything. The reservoir must certainly be tightly sealed, otherwise gasoline fumes will evaporate - which not only interferes with business, but can also be simply dangerous.

It is useful, of course, for this process to proceed as quickly as possible. Even if construction or repairs are taking place slowly, or it will not be necessary to apply waterproofing so soon, it is very important that the mixture is ready. Periodically, the entire mass will need to be mixed well. And during the time while the primer is being prepared, this is done at least 3-4 times.

Naturally, the process should take place in a dry, clean, fireproof place, away from heat sources and wiring.

It is necessary to remember the following subtleties:

  • homemade primer tends to thicken (therefore, it is not recommended to cook it strongly in advance);
  • the temperature during the preparation of the mixture (and during its storage) cannot exceed 80 degrees;
  • if the primer has frozen during operation, it must be reheated and thoroughly stirred;
  • since the composition will go into a solid state at a sufficiently low temperature, it must be stored in a warm room with stable conditions;
  • it is absolutely impossible to allow freezing of the primer during storage;
  • after applying the composition, it must dry properly (at least 16 hours);
  • during the preparation of the primer, and indeed next to it, smoking and making an additional open fire is strongly discouraged.
