Round gazebo: types and production
The gazebo is an integral part of every summer cottage. You can relax in it, have a good time, and also it perfectly performs an aesthetic function, decorating the site. They are also used in the design of courtyards, recreation parks and other public places.

There are a large number of varieties of arbors, distinguished both by the shape of the structure and by the types of materials from which they are built. Each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages.
By constructive type, the following types of gazebos are distinguished:
- circle or semicircle shape;
- rectangle or hexagon;
- capital and lightweight summer gazebos;
- gazebos with a roof covering in the form of an awning, a dome, an ordinary flat roof.
Features of gazebos
When building arbors, the following types of materials are used:
- metal;
- brick;
- wood.
It is worth noting that the choice of the shape of the gazebo does not depend on the type of material from which it will be made.
A round gazebo repeats the shape of a polygon, so it is customary to build its frame in the form of a hex or octahedron. The number of faces is determined depending on the size of the building.
To achieve a certain shape of the gazebo, it is necessary to consider the following points. If you need to get a round gazebo, then the spans between the posts must be filled with straight objects. If it is required to erect a rotunda or a gazebo made in the shape of a semicircle, then the space must be filled with spherical material. This nuance must be taken into account when erecting not only walls, but also a roof, which allows, depending on the choice of the type of filling, to obtain a roof in the form of a dome or a cone.
Before erecting the foundation, it is necessary to accurately determine the mass and size of the building, since the type of foundation will depend on this.
A light summer gazebo can be erected without a foundation. But if you still need to build a large enough building from materials such as brick or timber, then you need to make a fairly strong and high-quality foundation.
Initially, only rotundas were built, but after a certain period of time, thanks to this type of arbors, round structures appeared.
In parks and in areas where estates are located, the ideal solution would be to build a gazebo for the garden or a semicircular gazebo. Rotunda made of bricks or decorative finishes are widespread.
The easiest way is to build a brick gazebo. With materials such as wood or metal, construction is complicated by the presence of curved parts of the building, which subsequently need to be filled.
Also, when building a structure made of wood, the bends of arches are bent in factories for the processing of wooden products. For bending, a peeled or sliced veneer is used. They come from the following tree species: birch, alder, poplar, ash and maple. The best of them in plastic is birch.
It is possible to assemble wooden round arbors with your own hands only from ready-made parts, since to obtain a curved shape, the wood is subjected to hydrothermal treatment.
In wooden arbors, parts of arches, roofs, as well as elements of filling spans are rounded off.
The same problems apply to metal as to wood, therefore, when making a gazebo from metal, the parts will also be factory-made, since forging at home is impossible.
How to build a rotunda?
Rotunda is one of the most expensive types of gazebos, but it can also be attributed to the most respectable and durable option.
The main part of such a gazebo are columns, which can be made from the following materials:
- bricks;
- stone;
- monolithic block.
For the construction of the column, the material is poured into the so-called split formwork, which has a special inner coating. According to the standard, such additional equipment is made of moisture-resistant plasterboard.
You can also find prefabricated columns on sale, the main component of which is cement or polymerized gypsum. An alternative to the columns can be piles made of concrete and having a circular cross-section. These elements will simultaneously serve as a foundation.
This method of erecting a rotunda is used only when the soil requires it, or if piles are laid on the site along with the columns for the structure to be erected, for example, a house.
It should be noted that when purchasing a factory rotunda kit, assembly instructions are included with it. Also, many manufacturers provide their own advice on the construction of the base.
There are rotunda variants in which a foundation is not needed. They are also called self-supporting rotundas. Naturally, this version of the gazebo is more expensive. This set also includes a balustrade with curly balusters and a fiberglass dome - such a composition will give your rotunda a special look.
If it is decided not to resort to the help of professionals and to make the gazebo on your own, then brick will be the most favorable material for this.
Supports are used when necessary - they are required for good stability of the building. In a specific situation, the most practical option would be to use a columnar foundation, which is made from waste ceramic bricks.
How to make supports?
At the initial stage, it is necessary to divide the site, apply markings along the entire contour of the structure, and then proceed with earthworks. The markings are applied to comply with all mandatory proportions, as well as for the process of correctly determining the placement of the pillars under the foundation, and therefore for the columns of the building.
In order to proceed to the described work, it is necessary to determine the size of the rotunda and mark the ground according to them, namely: to draw a circle with the radius of the arbor. Then you should put a rectangle in it. The generally accepted standard size of a rotunda is 4 m in diameter, which corresponds to 6 columns. From this it follows that a hexagon must be applied to the ground.
Before proceeding with the development of the soil, it is necessary to install small pegs at the corners of the hexagon. Then you need to make an excavation in the ground with a depth of 1-1.2 meters - this is necessary to install the pillars under the foundation, after which work is done with the bottom of the pits. They wake up by 20 cm with a mixture of sand and gravel and are covered with a waterproof film. After that, the laying of the pillars begins.
The number of bricks in one row depends on the massiveness of the structure; on average, 4 to 6 bricks are taken. The space formed between the bricks and the reinforcement rods should be filled with mortar.
When working with vertical surfaces, it is only necessary to treat them with hot bitumen or use liquid glass. It is also recommended to add various types of additives, which will protect the surface from water ingress and make it resistant to low temperatures.
Layout of columns is possible from silicate or ceramic bricks. To avoid wasting time decorating the columns, you should immediately pay attention to the shape of the brick. If it is decided to make the columns of a cylindrical shape, then it will be most convenient to use a shaped brick. It has distinctive features and therefore is used in other types of work. The erection of columns is carried out in the same way as for foundation posts.
The dimensions of the rotunda usually have the following parameters: the dome has a height of 4.5 to 4.8 m, the columns have a size of 2.8 to 3 m. The rest of the rotunda is the roof. These dimensions are valid for a diameter of 4 m.
Rotunda is subdivided into two types:
- with columns;
- with openings in the walls.
When erecting a rotunda with columns, it is necessary to pour the foundation between them. If the method with openings in the walls is used, then they are usually erected in the form of an arch.
When erecting a brick arch, you will have to resort to the use of a special formwork, called a "circle". It is placed with support on the walls, after which wedging is carried out. When laying the lintel, a separate type of brick is used - wedge brick.
The spacing in the edges can reach from 10 to 20 mm, which makes it possible to lay out arches with a different radius. If, when forming arches, ordinary brick is used, then the shape is achieved by thickening the seams on one side.
Sufficiently experienced builders can strap the columns using formwork, or replace it with brickwork. It will be easier for a beginner to build it out of metal.
You will also need plastic slats. They must be used when carrying out the lathing under the roofing material.
When using a bar made of wood, it is best to resort to its polymer analog, since it bends much easier, which saves time. These elements must be folded in two or three rows, and then screwed, like a regular shingle, with self-tapping screws.
Then it remains to find a suitable type of roofing material. The best thing for this business is roofing tiles.
The easiest way is to order a finished roof. It remains only to install it on the prepared columns.
The finishing stage in the construction of the rotunda is the finishing and decoration of the columns. Here you can resort to plaster to give them a marble look, or use a variety of existing decors. Ratonda with barbecue inside looks very good in the center of the site, which will be a decoration of landscape design.
