Peculiarities
Forchuna's euonymus is an evergreen shrub that belongs to the euonymus family and has more than two hundred varieties. The homeland of the plant is China, where this culture is used as a representative of landscape design to this day.
Due to its interesting appearance, euonymus has spread throughout the world, many gardeners and summer residents prefer to grow it on their site.
Fortune's euonymus has many varieties, but the most common is the Emerald Gold variety, which can most often be seen in landscape design. The description of this plant comes down to the following characteristics:
- the shape of the leaves is oblong, oval;
- foliage color is variegated, two-colored, in spring it has a light green tint, in autumn - from red to pink;
- during flowering, the bush is covered with small flowers.
In natural conditions, Fortune's euonymus grows no more than 30 cm and has a creeping structure. If there is a support or a wall near the plant, then it can cling to it and crawl up, rising to a height of up to two meters.
As for the Emerald Gold variety, it is distinguished by the presence of a golden border, which looks especially good on young leaves. This type is usually used in vertical landscape decoration. In addition to this variety, "Emerald Haiti" and "Harlequin" are also considered popular. In order for a personal plot or landscape that is planned to be decorated with euonymus to look most impressive, it is necessary to be able to plant it and carry out qualified care for it.
How to plant?
To grow Fortune's euonymus, you need to be able to propagate it correctly. This procedure can be done in two ways:
- vegetative reproduction;
- use of seeds.
The second option is less convenient and does not guarantee the receipt of a new plant with all the characteristics of the mother, therefore gardeners prefer to use the vegetative method.
Due to the fact that the culture is creeping, during the growth of shoots, nodules are formed on them, which, upon prolonged contact with the soil, give roots. The rooted area can be separated from the main bush and planted separately.
Another breeding option is the use of cuttings. To do this, the shoot is cut into pieces of about 10 cm and planted in specially prepared soil, after which the cuttings gradually germinate. In this case, it is important to use not yet lignified material, which is treated with a growth stimulator before planting in the substrate. In order for the growth of the cutting to be as fast as possible, it is better to place it in a peat-sand mixture, and then cover the entire container with a film. A month later, the root system will already be formed, and the cuttings must be planted in individual containers in which they will survive the winter, and only then they can be transplanted into open ground to a permanent place.
The simplest way of reproduction is to divide the bush, in which the plant is divided into several parts, the cuts are treated with charcoal and planted in new places. Planting euonymus is recommended in April or May, for which a trench or pit is dug, depending on how exactly the culture will grow. For the bush to take root, the hole must be almost twice as large as the root system. The bottom of the pit should be covered with drainage, the height of which will be up to 15 cm. The soil with which the roots will be covered should be prepared. The earth is mixed with sand and humus, in addition, peat and mineral composition are also introduced.
After planting, the plant is well watered, the soil around it is mulched with sawdust, leaves or peat. For the bushes, you need to find a sunny place, prepare supports for fastening and organize proper maintenance.
How to take care of it properly?
Fortune's euonymus "Emerald Gold" is an undemanding crop and no special care is required. For the full growth of a shrub, it is enough to perform the following actions:
- watering should be carried out only when the topsoil has dried well, in the area where in the summer it rains once every one or two weeks, there is no need to water the culture at all;
- in order to keep the soil as moist as possible, it is worth mulching it, it is best to use sawdust for this;
- to form a certain appearance of the shrub, the euonymus can be cut off.
Young bushes that have just been planted in the ground need special care. For them, a mandatory measure is loosening the soil, as well as removing weeds. Watering at this time is carried out more often to help the plant quickly take root, and after a few days you need to remove all excess greens, while loosening the soil near the bush.
Young bushes can be covered in winter, especially in regions with cold climates., older plants overwinter well under any conditions. An additional care measure is feeding, which helps the euonymus to look lush, and the color of the greenery to make it brighter and more saturated. You can add additives in spring and autumn using compost, mineral additives and potassium-phosphorus mixtures.
Diseases and pests
If you take proper care of Fortune's euonymus "Esmerald Gold", then the culture does not suffer from pests and diseases. In case of some mistakes and shortcomings, pests such as:
- shield;
- spider mite;
- aphid;
- apple moth.
If such pests have been identified, it is necessary to remove the affected areas as soon as possible and spray the entire bush with chemical compounds. Soap solution and insecticides are the best for aphids and powdery mildew; you can fight the spider mite with more frequent watering, as it does not tolerate moisture.
If over-watered, fungal infections can attack the crop., therefore, you should be careful when caring for the plant. To protect the bushes from diseases, it is worth treating them with fungicidal compounds in the spring. Most often, euonymus suffers from powdery mildew, when the leaves become covered with a gray-white bloom, after which they begin to dry out and fall off.
