Stylish wooden arches in the interior
The design of modern apartments and private homes is extremely diverse. Recently, more and more arches are placed in the premises. Sometimes they are put solely for aesthetic purposes, and sometimes they can perform a practical function. The variety of modern arches makes them affordable and suitable for almost any type of interior.
Benefits of arches
Sometimes they replace doors in the interior, sometimes they are constructed around doors, and in some cases they are simply placed in the middle of a spacious room in order to delimit the space in this way. Designers often offer the placement of arches in a variety of interiors - from classic furnishings to country style or modern eclecticism.
This design solution has a number of advantages.
- It allows you to combine the space and make the room visually wider, brighter and more spacious. It is for such purposes that ordinary interior doors are often replaced with fashionable and unusual arches. Of course, an arch instead of a door does not always fit. For example, for a bedroom or study, the openness of the space may be unacceptable. However, when you need to combine an entrance hall with a living room or a dining room with a kitchen, an arch can be a great help with this.
- It can help and delineate the space. Very often, the arched structure is placed in the now popular studio apartments. Also, this option can allow you to separate the kitchen area from the bedroom, while the arch will take up very little space.
- It can be functional. In interiors in Provencal style, pots with flowers are hung on it, and connoisseurs of the classics can make a shelf for books on the arch. This design solution will allow not only to organize the space at home, but also to effectively use the space. The variety of arches that perform a practical function is very large, so this solution is suitable even for small studios.
- The interior will take on a sophisticated look and become more complete. The organization of the space is very important. If you have an empty room that is too large, a logical solution would be to divide it into zones. If, on the contrary, your apartment has two small rooms, they can be combined. The competent use of arches will allow you not to be limited by the typical layout of the apartment and to equip the most comfortable, beautiful and functional space for yourself.
- Placing such options instead of doors in various interiors is a rather fresh, unusual and fashionable solution that has just begun to gain popularity. So you you can give the space of the house a unique personality.

Modern arches are extremely varied. Sometimes these are interior models, the so-called arches on the door, and sometimes options that can be installed right in the middle of the room. Various options will look relevant both in an apartment and in a brick or wooden house.
You should consider the main types of arches, which are now popular for the most diverse interiors.
- The most popular are classic arches in the form of a regular semicircle... They fit perfectly into the interior portal and replace the door. Such arches are made from a variety of materials: wood, metal or plaster. The choice depends on the characteristics of your interior. A classic plaster arch can be painted to match the walls or pasted over with wallpaper. These arches are usually quite tall and not very suitable for rooms with low ceilings.
- Elliptical arch wider and lower. It is great for small rooms, allowing you to visually expand the space. Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that such an arch does not always fit into a narrow doorway. Very often it is placed to divide the space in a room, and not used instead of a door.
- Arch-rocker Is an unusual model. It is cut in a semicircle in the middle, and its ends are straight and parallel to the floor. Such options can be very diverse: high, low, wide or narrow. Mostly they are carved from wood, although there are also plaster options.
- Portal - this is the simplest design, which has a rectangular shape. Between rooms, it often looks like an ordinary doorway without a door. Often such arched structures are placed in modern minimalist interiors, in which simplicity of form is important.
- Arch in romantic style mainly suitable for wide doorways. It is a modification of the portal: the middle of such a model is straight and parallel to the floor, but the corners are rounded. Plaster options are suitable for classic interiors, while wooden models fit well with country and colonial styles.
- Transom Is an arched structure that is a continuation of the door. Often it is made from the same materials as the door, so that they make up a single ensemble. Such arches and doors with glass stained-glass inserts look very interesting. Also, open shelves are often placed on such arches, for example, for books or any small things. A practical solution would be to make such an arch for the front door. This way you can save space by using the arch for attaching the shelves.
- The arched structure in the Art Nouveau style resembles ellipse, however with sharp corners... This shape is most often made of wood and looks great in almost any modern interior. It combines sharp corners and a rounded shape, so it will be in harmony with both soft streamlined shapes and geometric elements of modern furniture. This model is considered the best option for eclectic furnishings.
- Arch-trapezium often also looks very interesting. In the interior in country style, it is used most often. This simple arch is well suited for dividing rooms and dividing a single space into zones. In addition, this arch in the doorway is the easiest to make, since for this you only need to sew the corners.
- For doorways it is sometimes used semi-arches... On the one hand, an ordinary portal remains, and on the other, a rounded shape is made: this is a very interesting idea for modern interiors. Often this model looks great with high multi-level ceilings. This option is well suited for a spacious apartment or private house. Most often, this option is made of plaster and painted to match the walls.
Modern models can be different, for example, triangular or free-form. Such complex models are usually made according to individual sketches.
Among other things, arches can have the following functions.
- Models combined with a rack are often placed on a loggia, in a hallway or in a living room. This will help you make the most of all available space and arrange your belongings beautifully.
- Often, arched structures with a coffee table are placed in the living room or bedroom. A small mirror can also be placed there. This is a great place for cosmetics, books, or personal items.
- When arranging a studio apartment or a spacious kitchen-dining room, arches are very often combined with bar counters. They look extremely organic, help to better organize the space and divide a large room into two zones.
How to do it yourself?
You can even make a stylish arch for the interior with your own hands, most often these are models made of plasterboard.
To create such an arch, you will need the following tools:
- putty;
- metal profiles;
- fiberglass mesh;
- self-tapping screws;
- drywall;
- tools for work.
You can create an arch as follows.
- Estimate the dimensions of the doorway. Based on them, draw an arch of the desired shape on the drywall and cut it out.
- The arch frame must be made of metal profiles and attached to the doorway. You can use wooden blocks instead of metal, but they will be less practical.
- Install two sheets of drywall on both sides. For fastening, you need to use screws that match the thickness of your sheets.
- Fasten metal profiles along the edge of the sheets.
- Join the two installed sheets together using another sheet of drywall and self-tapping screws.
- Straighten the edge with a knife.
- Cover the arch structure with fiberglass mesh.
- Finish: Apply a putty to the arch to achieve an even and smooth surface.
An arch made of wood is often even easier to make, it is only important to correctly measure the doorway and cut suitable elements from the wood. Then they are simply fastened together with nails and fixed in the opening.
Now there are also metal arched structures made of forged lattice, but they are rarely used. It is difficult to make such models with your own hands and it is better to order from professionals.
